It's Here! Maryland 5*

Thanks for clearing that up. Until this event, the thought never crossed my mind that EquiRatings might not have the “rights” to cover a big time event.

I’ve never paid much attention to Major League Eventing. I see they are Maryland based so it makes sense that they would be involved here. Taking a quick look, they seem to be mostly a podcast. Their social media seems to mostly be promoting themselves and their sponsors.

Yeah I was looking for Equiratings predictions too and found it odd that there was nothing.

Hey I know that horse!

Ah, I see what you’re saying. Presumably equi ratings wasn’t hired, so there you are.

I mean, COTH was covering it. EN was covering it. The Baltimore Sun was covering it. There were various international specialty media outlets present. If EquiRatings had wanted media credentials, they could have gotten them.

I’m not sure what level of special backend access EquiRatings requires to do the level of predictions, podcasts, etc. they do for other major events, but it appears they are usually paid by the event for that promotion, so that’s likely where things broke down.

They both have podcasts, but I don’t really see MLE and EquiRatings as competitors. They do quite different things.

Yes, I am still curious if EquiRatings didn’t have any coverage because they weren’t hired to partner with the event or if they were prohibited from covering/promoting because Major League Eventing was “the official podcast” or something to that effect.

As @findthedistance just posted, I don’t see the two entities as competitors even if maybe they see themselves that way. I had been hoping to do the fantasy game for the Maryland 5*.

I missed them. A LOT. I just didn’t get excited like I do when there are preview pods, Eventing Manager (which helps everyone pay attention to the “little guys” too), updates on records that could be beaten, etc. Plus, I didn’t realize how much I rely on Equiratings to provide some frame of reference for the scores we see until they weren’t there. Are the dressage marks trending high or low? Does this horse usually have time faults? What are the average clear rates at 5* sj? The review pods really help with the horse show hangover too.

If the reason they weren’t present is because they weren’t hired, I think Maryland sorely missed out on an opportunity (particularly for an international audience). I understand first year budgets can be tight, but here’s hoping they see the value and include it in the marketing budget next year.

Look at their website and offerings. It seems clear to me (imo) that you don’t get the goods unless you pay the fees. Major League Eventing didn’t exclude Equi Ratings.

The Form Guide for Maryland that was produced by EN and embedded in the Digital Program was very well done and had fairly extensive stats on each horse and rider pair entered in the 5*. However, it wasn’t distilled down into the bite size, easily digestible chunks that we have become accustomed to from EquiRatings.

I’ll second this. I love playing Eventing Manager and really missed EquiRatings content. I’m an avid listener of MLE and ER podcasts. I appreciate and like them both, but they are both very different. Hopefully next year ER will be involved.

I had one by jump 16 on the 3* course, I could see jump 13 and the water complex and it was amazing. I would do it again IF, they get better shuttles, that was a mess.

Also they made a big deal of how you needed to pay $200 for a tent and could not set up your own, so we paid, and then 3 people next to us set up their own tents and no one said a peep.

Loved watching all the action of the new five star on USEF Network for free! Super thrilled that Boyd won it!
Monday-itis now that it is over, I was wondering- where was Liz Halliday-Sharp and Marilyn Little for this big competition? Anyone know why they elected not to run at this prestigious event?

Marilyn Little only has the one horse and I believe she had a horse fall at GMI in August at the 4*S so probably was not in the right place to run a 5 star. I think Elisabeth Halliday-Sharp is planning to do Pau at the end of the month.

I asked if EquiRatings was planning on doing a Maryland review show, and they aren’t :frowning: such a bummer! I’m not sure all the behind the scenes stuff involved with these decisions, but from someone who listens regularly, I’m bummed.

Looks great on your horse, and I love the name too!

@Laurierace Tell your daughter her workmanship is gorgeous! I’m planning on getting a Mastiff in a couple years… might need one of those lead ropes for a leash. LOL

We were hoping to have our prototype leashes and collars ready for the show as it is something we are considering adding to our product list but they weren’t done in time. Have five bridle prototypes on order as well so may be expanding if it turns out as we envision.

They were not hired by Maryland so as D said on the Discord group they run, they are not giving away their hard work for free which is fair enough. It’s also why they didn’t cover Boekelo.

Totally makes since!

Funny I had the opposite thought!
JP improved her dressage by like 13 points from Landrover. She didn’t have a lot of time and maybe SJ wasn’t great but she also had to travel further than most.

The other Canadians had great performances. Remember we didn’t qualify a team for the Olympics…. It now looks like we will have a team for WEG. WOOT. Things are improving, give them time. They have no High performance program, no coach, no funding, no NOTHING. I would love to see any other country riders perform to this level with such little support from their country. They’ve all been home training on their own.

I think LM just took her good XC for granted and forgot to ride every fence.

SRB isn’t aiming for UL anymore I don’t think?
