Who’s riding? Who’s got a horse showing? Who’s going to watch? Mom and I are going to watch Wed so I need to know who to look for!
Non-riding child & I are going on Saturday to watch the leadline, as well as the friend of a friend ride in something the same day. We’d be thrilled to come hold horses, make a tack tent/store run for any last-minute items & cheer you on from the rail like you’re U2! 1
Why isn’t this a real job? It needs to be!
I love upperville! My mare does not as much… but she doesn’t hate it and will tolerate it lol. She’s 100% game in the ring but the warmup and walking by the vendors is a different matter altogether.
If possible you should totally go on Thursday to watch the international derby. Maybe not as thrilling as a GP but the horses are soo swoonworthy

I know! We wanna be COTHer hype women! We’re also dang good at holding ring bags, polishing human boots & horse hooves; holding horses while their rider makes a last minute port-a-potty trip, &encouraging/escorting nervous equines thru the in gate.
I’ll be there Saturday for sidesaddle with my mare! It’s her sidesaddle debut and I’m so excited to finally get her out doing that this year.
I could rock that job description! I’m also darn good at making friends laugh when they get nervous (if not myself )
@junesj68, I love the derby, but Wed is the day I am off. Mid week is also a bit quieter and I don’t mind watching the “regular” hunter classes. Showing there is on the bucket list. Sigh…one day
I’ll be competing tomorrow! I’m hoping to break my Upperville bad luck. I’ve never had things go to plan there… unfortunately it’s already started out that way this week too
Here’s hoping a bad dress rehearsal makes a great performance! Have a great time either way
One of my youngsters is in the lower jumpers, I think the 1.10 maybe? Chestnut w/ all the chrome.
Upperville is a legendary place! As a junior, we went to Devon but not VA. Not sure why. If you’re there, however, check out a client of mine’s vendor booth—DandyLion. Gorgeous home goods. She did her first venture into the horse world when a last-minute booth space opened at Wellington this past winter and has been invited back for the entire season. She’s also been a professional chef at NYC restaurants (one was Michelin-starred). Kind of a nice change of retail pace from horse stuff!
I’ll keep my eyes open for DandyLion! Agreed, Upperville is hallowed ground to me. I know I’ll never qualify for Devon, but just the chance to ride under those trees
I’ve always wanted to go to Upperville, must make it a priority next year before I am too old!
If you want to compete at Upperville, get a Connemara. The Connemara classes, on Sunday, never fill.
During my showing days, anytime I had a horrible pre-show school I ended up doing pretty well at the show, anytime I had a great show - well you probably know the rest of the story.
Hope you and everyone has a fantastic week of showing
I am going to the Jumper afternoon classes on Saturday. Should I bring a folding chair?
yes, seating fills fast
Yes! Idk what the distribution of competitors looks like now. But the Cleveland Bays always seemed a little light. And the side saddle over fences.
A few weeks ago, DD18 was quizzing her sister & me on the # of entries in the Local Hunter classes: “GUESS!! Just guess! 120? Nope! Whomp-whomp!”
Of course, people register & ultimately scratch. At the time, though, there were so many entries that it put me in mind of that quote from MacBeth: “tomorrow, & tomorrow, & tomorrow, creeps in this petty pace from day to day to the last syllable of recorded time…” Because, I can only imagine – 146 entries × 1or 2 trips each. scream: :rofl
I so wish I could watch the Upperville classes as part of my USEF CMH membership! Unfortunately, well… I am CMH biggest hater
