It's Upperville Week!

I went to the Upperville show website and the live feed of the Parker ring thru CMH works for me! I only have the USEF one too.

You should be able to watch it! https://www.upperville.com/live-stream/
I tried on a private browser (so not logged in to usef) and I was able to watch

I don’t follow the hunters but I’ve seen some videos from Upperville in the hunters. There were several people posting the canter. I thought this was frowned upon in the hunters.

If you want to do this at WEC, I will gladly welcome you in Ocala with a glass of chardonnay as a tip!

Loudoun benefit is the week immediately following Upperville at the same show grounds; it drawns a more local crowd but very similar show feel. Doesn’t have FEI classes but still has some $$ derbies and GP on Saturday evening. Many barns stay for 2 weeks.

This is my dorky question because I haven’t played anywhere near the fancier sandboxes in decades but, doesn’t the Loudoun Benefit immediately follow Upperville? Why not stick around for that? I’ve never been myself – is the stabling all under tents? Do people not want to do that for an extended period?

Whoops. Jinx. Ignore me :joy:

Many people do stick around, and some who didn’t show at Upperville, will come to Loudoun.

It sounds like a good one for the bucket list.

LOL, replied at the same time! But to answer your stabling question: stabling set up is the exact same. Undesirable tent stalls haha. We are in the same tent for both weeks and thankfully horses get to go home Sunday night to be out in their fields until Tuesday when they come back but - we know we’re lucky to be close enough to home to do this!

Loudoun is not Premier like Upperville is and certainly not as much prestige but very similar numbers, and offers classes below the 3’ level so tends to draw more of the Zone 3 programs. I have to imagine some of the bigger programs only want to do the FEI classes or AA rated week and then move on.

I have these 90s-era romantic memories of temporary stabling :joy:

Dumb question- I’m thinking of going as a spectator tomorrow (Sat.) I saw there aren’t many entries in the TB breeding classes? Do they get a lot of late entries?

Trying to plan the morning and I wanted to watch those, but if they’re empty I might prioritize a different ring.

Horses are being judged in hunter classes, not riders.

No. There won’t be many TB hunter breeding entries if any. They are unfortunately a relic.

Upperville got a surge in popularity during Covid years when a lot of shows weren’t running and schedules changed but now that all the options are back in play, some of the barns have decided to go to shows that are a little more welcoming- no need to fire in entries within 5 min of opening and I think a lot of the out of area sorts didn’t really do well with our VA office staff mannerisms. At least that’s why one barn took 50 horses elsewhere this year.

All of hunter breeding looks down at Upperville to me. TB classes are always smaller than WB classes but the numbers in general look down from last year.

My horse is Irish by nationality, but I don’t have his papers or his specific breeding. I put a lot of work into trying to track down his parentage, not least so that I could potentially show him in the partbred classes at Upperville. No dice.

A past trainer took a client’s Cleveland Bay mare to show in the breed classes and had a ball.

It’s also a TOUGH venue. Very spooky. The vendors being on top of the rings, busy road right there, lots of people riding in a very small area. It’s one of those venues where your horse is either okay with it, or really, really isn’t. I have horses I specifically won’t bring just because of that.

Also, my upperville curse continued. Today I’m going into the office to pay $300… on a horse I didn’t even get to ride in the show. No fault on him. Here he is looking cute in the warmup.
