Jingles for Evil Burrito: post 680 something EORTH :(

Update, Odie was very good per DH and did not need to be sedated. Woot! Next time though, Rory has to be locked up, because he wanted to play bitey face with Odie while Odie was tied up, and it complicated things for DH .

Also, here’s a pic DH snapped of the sore on the front of his cannon/fetlock area. He’s thinking we need to wash and clip his leg because the hair is all matted down and nasty, and he might lose more hair. This will definitely call for sedation, and I’m worried about him possibly standing on it while sedated without the splint while waiting for the hair to dry. I wonder if we can’t just clip it, even as nasty as it is… I do have a good set of regular-size clippers, Oster somethings.

I just realized that odie is a senior fellow of sorts : ) he is obviously young at heart!

Actually, he’s on five this year :). I had to fib a bit for Facebook…

Oooooh! That gave me pause…carry on. I would expect the lifespan is quite lengthy for his ilk? Please say yes!

Yes!! Like… 40s. Also, world’s oldest horse just died last year at age 55, same breed as his bestie, Rory. They should grow old together :).

I called the doc yesterday to ask about having Odie sedated and splintless for clipping his leg (it’s getting ew-cky under there with ointment + two-inch-long hair). Doc approved of it, but went on to ask about the Odes using his leg.

Well… In his stall, he doesn’t. Out of his stall, he does. So doc orders some hand walking once or twice a day, because Odie has lost some bone mass. Doc says he needs to start being weight bearing. Erm. Do I be honest about the activity Odie has been getting? No? Yes? Oh dear.

I didn’t. I feel so ashamed.

Annnnd, handwalking

That looks like Odie torture, poor boy.

Ooohhh…poor baby! I hope he starts feeling better soon.

Odie will be just fine! He is a scrappy fellow snd has the best humans!

Definitely the best humans! DH clipped and washed his leg yesterday, all by himself while I clipped Rory.

And once Odie woke up, he got to wander around the barn and get into mischief.

I think he is walking MUCH better. Looks like he is actually using that leg now.

Stopped in for my Odie Fix

Ask your vet about a karaya gel pad for the wound - it’s the stuff they use for ostomy sites or to attach electrodes & a friend once used one to successfully treat a nasty wither sore.

Hmm, interesting! Depending on how it looks tomorrow, I may ask. But already the front one looks MUCH better, and hopefully now that we have all that hair and ick off :dead: the sore on the back will speed up the healing process also :).

And update! Evil Burrito was walking on it nearly normal in the stall yesterday! WOOT!! Huge improvement from not walking on it in the stall at all .

I did notice that his hoof looked weird Thursday, but I think it’s a combination of odd looking donkey foot and the heel being contracted.

That sore could have been why he could not walk before, if pressure from the cast made it hurt.

Our horse that had a cast thru two go rounds also developed some sores, but his were right on the coronary band and healed just fine once the cast was off.

Glad to hear that he is using his leg with weight on it now, that is excellent news.

Yes for sure! I’m tickled pink. And oh my goodness he was a braying fool yesterday! Brayed several times when I took Rory out for a quick lunge before the farrier came out, brayed when both Nika and Rory were out getting their feet done. I think Odie is definitely feeling more like himself.

I bet he was in pain from the cast, and the sore getting rubbed, just like you guessed. Poor baby! I’m sure the braying means he feels better.

Probably. The handwalk today was even better than Thursday’s (I won’t bore you with another video), and he was putting weight on it while he was grazing. HUGE improvement. Also, I had tied him out to munch grass while I worked Rory, and the PNW monsoon dumped on us. Rory was being a twit so I stuck him in the barn in crossties and ran back out for Odie…who was staring at me and braying until I was right on top of him, like “hurry up, woman, it’s wet out here!!”

This was pre-monsoon, and I just snapped a quick shot, but he actually was resting weight on it :).

:encouragement::yes:

DH called the vet this morning to ask about whether or not the vet thought Odie could handle getting his foot trimmed (it’s pretty long, to be fair, he was past due when this originally happened…in Sept shame).

Vet said yes, and also that he could go splintless in the stall, but splinted still outside of the stall. EEP!!! I have mixed feelings about this  . The vet was out at the other barn on the property Friday and he went over and peeked at Odie before he left, so I guess he has a good reason for changing his instructions!

Odie will be so happy!

very nice! i remember when i got my cast off–it was great! i’d think that as long as he’s not bouncing around his stall like a superball, he should be fine…
