Wait… wasn’t Rory your Irish gelding?!? What did I miss here?
I didn’t really publicize it. After he blew the one suspensory, he blew the other while still on stall rest and this was soft-tissue injury number four in two years, so whatever degenerative thing he had going on (best guess rapidly evolving dsld) wasn’t getting better and he was not one who could do “retirement.” He was blowing thru equioxx and 700 mg of trazadone like it was nothing, so we got him to better weather and he’s here at the farm forever. It really sucked and it’s why I haven’t ridden since August other than I think twice on the pony. I just… don’t want to. Not yet. So you didn’t miss it, it wasn’t there
Jingles for the little guy.
So sorry to hear about your loss of Rory. How heartbreaking.
And jingles for little Odie.
I’m so sorry you’re going through this, but I’m glad that someone who loves and cares so much is there to make the best decision for him. Whatever that may be.
Holding you all close in my heart.
Oh I’m so sorry for your loss, and the heartbreak you must be feeling.
{HUGS} & Sympathy for your loss of Rory.
I lost DH’s Walker (almost a year after losing DH) to a progressive lameness that sounds similar. NQR in October, lying down most of the day in January, synovial fluid when tapped, watery.
He was his sweet self through all of it.
Hurts like nothing else to find out there’s nothing left to do but let them go.
Wishing you Peace & Comfort in whatever you have to decide for Odie.
A week later, warmer weather, and an impromtu vet visit (see below) and he is doing better - yay jingles!!
We are going to give equioxx another try. He is doing better today than he has in a while, I gave him and Argie half each this morning because Argie was basically not weight-bearing behind. A few later and I was (not crying) on the phone with the vet and away we went to her house. Argie most likely has an abscess tho we did find arthritis in his hock, yanno because he’s a champion reiner in his off time . Yes he was xrayed from toe to stifle because that is how this barn rolls, plus I was absolutely terrified because 10 years ago the vet thought it was an abscess and we didnt xray for a few days.
Anyway. We went ahead and discussed Odie some, no xrays because it was Sunday and she has a life. And I have minty fresh concentrate bute to make farrier days easier for him, plus obviously the Arg. He has been Magic Cushioned and wrapped, vet asked about soaking and I asked if she had ever soaked a cat, so we settled on Magic Cushion .
Here they are at the vet
Also Odie, big mad at home and demanding treats because he had to hang out while I wrapped Argie

And said treats plus disgruntled burrito who is still a little pouty about the bute

Oh my. Argie did not want his son to be the only limping one.
The treat video is too cute.
Continued Jingles for them both.
Argie is already better, either bute is that great (not my experience, to that extent) or maybe he popped the abscess under the wrap overnight. Not only is Argie weight-bearing and standing on it, but he can back up quite handily while we had a conversation about this morning’s bute (“no,” “yes,” “mm mm no,” “yes it’s good for you,” “nu uh,” “c’mon now,” “no, stop, abuse, halp,”).
Some do but most dont IME. Here it just get grodie under the long coat.
I’m late to this thread but I am so sorry about your Rory and about Mr Odie. I think we have all loved the stories and pictures about his evil escapades. And who knew burros had all that hair!
I’ll keep jingling for him.
I’m sorry to hear you lost Rory. <> I still tear up thinking about my gelding and mare. Glad to hear Argie is better. Jingles for Odie to continue getting better. Interesting that donkeys don’t necessarily shed out. Love your adventures with the evil burrito.
I’m so sorry to hear about Rory. Sherri told me at the last LWSC E/W show. Then I see it here. It’s so hard to lose an old friend. I wondered why I hadn’t seen much about him lately.
And I was just thinking about you, Rory and the Evil Burrito because I just came across my pictures of visiting Odie when he’d broken his leg. I can’t believe how time has flown!
Go pet the perfect pony and the giant baby and feel better.
Thank you. Poor Sherri, yeah she had to deal with me talking it out back and forth because it was a hard decision, and being mopey and sad in person (she is the best).
Honestly those girls make life better, esp the giant baby (I think about 15.2 or 15.3 right now and if she’s under 1000 I’d be very surprised, turns 3 in two weeks and would nearly be a size two shoe if she needed them).
But these guys Ugh I love them.
Wow, your baby is getting HUGE! So exciting!
Spoiled. Ass. Asses.
Herd health appt on Monday, I’ll share any updates and pictures obviously. Odes was a little bit sorer today buuuuuuut… still Evil
And still just way too cute!
Evil is his Profession. A little Owie should not affect his natural propensity.
My own Sweet Baboo of a mini turned 9 in May & has acquired a 'tude.
Lucky for us both, it’s also mini-sized.
Examples:
I tell him “Go to your house!(stall)”
He goes, but his wittle ears are pinned.
I lead him out to get harnessed & driven.
He plants his wittle hoofs, several times along the route.
Which gets him a smack with the lead on his not-so-mini butt & puts him in motion
Teenagers!
OK regular vet appt today. Everyone got whatever shots deemed necessary and teeth checked (no dentals this year, my pocket book weeps with relief) and insidey bits carefully listened to, and then Argie got a more thorough exam and we discussed Odie (because horses aren’t expensive enough, I have to have extended convo about the pasture puff donkeys )
She did some molesting, excuse me, “palpating” on Argie and yeeep he strained his wee wittle groin. He shall be fine. $650 in emergency fees and rads and sobbing and blowing my nose on my shirt for a groin pull. Ass
Odie has been deemed FINE! “Arthritis,” good days and bad but she said in no way I am neglecting his care or causing him any undue discomfort, she said if I felt bad then I could keep him away from street traffic on bad days
Not that we have any animal control anyone can complain to anyway but… She said double up the equioxx on farrier days, don’t mix it and bute. Roger dodger. She poked their little butts and said they were the cutest and away she went. She also brought her five-month old beagle puppy, which literally was the cutest.
Relief
As you can see, everyone was very stressed
The super senior laid down for third nap before she had even left the driveway
