Those lil dudes are sooo cute!
You have some clipping skills! I clipped my mini and the results were pretty embarassing. So many layers of hair! My vet threatened to call a pro to finish my poor job. Congrats on having slick boys.
So adorable! Thanks for sharing an update! The zoomies!
Sigh
I mean really how often do you look in a little donkey pasture pet’s mouth? Noticed something seemed weird night before last, insisted on a look and yep, a missing tooth and another was loose and the gums looked… ick. Hoped maybe he got them hung on the hay net arguing with Argie, I mean he broke his leg fighting over food so why not right??
But I had the feeling again.
Took two hours vacation to leave work and meet the vet, she thought not and maybe just a complication of suspected PPID… but the “dagnabit” from the barn aisle as the images loaded on her computer said otherwise.
Right now leaning toward surgery to remove all of his bottom incisors. Vet is honest that she believes this will eliminate all pain once healed, yes his tongue will hang out but QOL should be good. The risk? The risk is his jaw may break during surgery. FML. The alternative is no surgery and let him go.
Sigh.
Damn.
I’m so sorry for both of you. I know you will make the best decision for him.
I’m so sorry. That’s not an easy choice regardless, but I’m guessing his age makes it even tougher.
Jingles for you both, whatever you decide.
He’s only 16, so yeah it really does. And since the decision isn’t just him but Argie too who is so bonded to him (I can’t even take Odie out for the vet or farrier without Argie trying to climb out of the stall or dig under the door, or run around braying his head off). Argie was kept alone as a breeding jack his whole life, Odie was his first and only friend.
Bleh.
Aww buddy
Is it…hopeful? at all that he’s lost a tooth on his own, and that another is loose? Perhaps they’re not going to be very challenging to pop out?
She said she will be careful to loosen carefully and cut any remaining tendons as she goes so there is no or minimal pressure on the jaw. The one next to the missing one is loose-ish, the one next to that seemed solid, but the far corner one is loosey-goosey sooooo…perhaps they will all slide out I mean I gave him a chance before and look at where it got him. I’m willing to do it again. The xrays don’t look great but neither did the ones what? Eleven and a half years ago? Obviously this will be in-clinic and under sedation and if the worse happens, I told her to PTS immediately and not call me for permission. Argie is going with, I will reach out to their breeder on the off-chance they want him back but they have no need for a john but they may know someone. Otherwise he would go with the Odes.
Ugh, EORTH is a horrible. My coach’s horse had it. Surgery was successful and he was pain free after healing. Wishing Odie and you a successful outcome.
Oh geez, what awful bad luck. Hoping for the best.
Jingling the 2Dogs curbchains HARD!
C’mon, Odie!
Bankrupt your gal, but live to be an Old, Old, (toofless) donk!
oh man…I am so sorry for the sucky news.
Fingers crossed, all the good vibes, jingles and prayers for Odie. He’s a tough ole donk, if anyone can pull through this…it will be him.
EORTH is horrible. BUT, my old man pony had 5 teeth out last April because of it and his quality of life improved greatly and he was happily slurping mush down that very same night. He was on banamine and SMZs for a week or so and mouth rinses twice a day which he actually seemed to almost enjoy (he’s different, lol). Sending Jingles for the little guy.
How did the procedure go? Were there concerns about his jaw at all? I’m just wondering if it’s because he’s so small or if so progressed. He gets looked at annually…
Not equine, but two of my cats have dealt with resorption. One had half of his teeth removed at 16 (very old for a cat), the other had all of his teeth removed at 12. Cat jaw bones being much tinier than horse jaw bones, they just kind of assumed they would need to do bone grafts. Both of my cats recovered well (and I was shocked to discover the pet insurance I had at the time covered resportion under veterinary costs and not dental, which is good because it well exceeded the costs of their dental plans).
I don’t know how resorption works with horses or oral surgery, but with cats, I’ve had surprisingly good experiences (have since lost half-tooth to old age. Toothless and his grumpy self is sleeping at my feet as I type this).
Jingles and good vibes, nonetheless
Oh @TheJenners, I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. Jingles for the Evil Burrito.
Jingles for you having to deal with the stress.
