Jingles for Argie too. Not an easy day for him, either.
Tell the Evil Burrito (and his dad who is so good at keeping an eye on him) that I am wishing him a comfortable recovery and I hope they both enjoy their stay at Vet Camp!
How are the two boys today?
They were moved out to what she calls the “micro stall” this afternoon, which is really just an enclosable small run-in attached to the small dry yard/run (I guess? small dirt lot about 40x40ish) next to the barn. I think it started life as a run-in for her Icelandic sheepies, which grew from a flock of three to…uh oh I think eight now? Anyway, they free roam the farm now. Back to the donks. Apparently her mare’s ph dropped AND she started making very ugly mare faces at the donkeys over the stall wall today and getting upset at their mere presence, so the boys got moved out so she would feel more comfortable hopefully foaling soon (seriously I think she’s 380 days +/-). She said they are actually much happier in there, her text last night was “Hi mom! 0/10 don’t recommend this hotel. Headachey, loud, crap service” She said today they were happier after getting moved out, but that Odie very much objects to novalsan dental wash and is a little swollen, otherwise dandy as can be, eating as is nothing has changed in his life. Naturally.
I just covered my eyes and paid the bill via the online portal I’m not saying it was more than half my farm mortgage payment, but… (whispers
) it was.
Thanks for the update, I was thinking about them all day. Can’t blame him for not liking the Novalsan, it tastes like crap (yes I did taste it and had deep regrets).
When are the wee beasts coming home?
I am looking the same surgery in the face for my old guy, so if you are willing, I’d love a ballpark figure for the cost. I’m so happy Odie is recovering so well. The Burrito abides.
It came out at $1400ish. Way cheaper than I expected, tbh. I think she snuck me a significant discount, I went thru the bill and can only guess she shaved off the majority of her clinic time because all the meds are there. I was expecting closer to $2k. I am grateful. Stupid adorable sweet asshole donkey. Sigh.
My first stop this morning was to check in on Odie. I’m invested in his recovery (just don’t send me the bill!) That’s about what my bill was for my guy give or take a little. Sending some more jingles just because.
So glad things went well.
Substitute VSE(mini) for donkey & there goeth I
That bill is truly not terrible.
I see your $1400 & raise you $1800 for a 4-day stay at the Vet College clinic, 3 of them in Isolation, for a NQR episode last January. Symptoms were mild fever, off his feed.
That last was most alarming
His pitiful self the day I hauled him to the clinic:
“Noms? No thanks”
After a battery of tests, final diagnosis was: Nothing.
All test results normal, mildly dehydrated so he got fluid$.
Sent home with “Just do what you were doing”
Glad Odie won the Spendy Pet Lottery for you, but came out the other side
That was with me with the experimental cipro/cypro whatever drug. So now they are just fat and I will manage the Cushings symptoms as I can. Argie is skirting crestfallen territory and ugh. But I’m not putting them thru that again. Short of getting a little hot walker, I have no idea what else to do. He’s gonna be 23 this Aug, and I barely have time to do all the things as it is, so adding long lining is not on the menu.
I also gave up. I have two fatties, who came to me fat, remain fat, and evermore will be fat. For a donkey to lose weight I think there has to be so much more movement than donkeys will do. I tried lunging (hysterically awful), hand walking (never enough time) and feed adjustments - oh, they LOVE to try to push themselves into hyperlypedemia by refusing to eat first cutting.
It just is what it is. If they’re happy and our lives are reasonably balanced, I call it a win.
I’m battling the EOTRH devil with my aged Paint. And Cushings. And IR. Sigh…yay for the trifecta of old horse fun! Thankfully, my piglet will eat his prascend in a piece of carrot along with his Equioxx. I am blessed! He eats first cut low sugar quite happily, and after rejecting his Greenguard muzzle a month ago, has accepted his Flexible Filly muzzle so now he can go out for longer than an hour on my gorgeous grass pastures. Phew! So that allows me some time to sort out tooth extraction over the summer rather than trying to juggle it during the school year (teacher here, so time off is a Beeep!). I am also having to manage his fat pony girlfriend’s diet as well. She refuses to eat hay. Teeth are good, vet approved. Just says nope. Alfalfa is fine. Soaked BP and orchard pellets are fine. Grass is great. Just no hay. I sense a pony muzzle in her future.
So so glad Odie is well! I think all of COTH is invested in the little Burrito’s adventures.
Huh I wonder why no hay??
Your guess is as good as mine! Her owner said she just picks at it, which is what I see too. Vet just did her teeth, which are in great shape for 25. She loves to graze and eats soaked anything so that’s her meal plan.
My old man donkey will only eat his Prascend and Equinox stuffed into half a mandarin/cutie orange.
Giggle.
This mental image is so cute. The Burrito crew on an itty bitty hot walker.
I think you need to do this.
If you can find a knowledgeable trainer & carve out some $$ & time, maybe train them to drive as a pair?
The Keyootness would be off the charts, you’d be sitting while they hauled you around…
I realize the reality of Life is a factor
Just a Pipedream I’ve had since a Driving Club member brought her mini-donk to a drive
ETA:
Look!
I harnessed them for you
