You guys are amazing, thank you. So far he seems to be putting weight on it and nothing has blown up yet so knocking on all the wood hopefully I can keep it clean and the massive doses of antibiotics that he is on will keep it at bay.

Are you supposed to give horses something for gut bacteria when you give them antibiotics? I didnā€™t askā€¦is that a thing?

Did I mention that Fatty is not the most stoic patient?

He is approximately 1200-1300 lbs of wiggly kicky hates water goofball. Keeping the soaking boot on him was an interesting challenge at bandage change (after we wore a bucket of Epsom salt water).

I am not sure whether he needs a tranquilizer or whether I do

Anyway - thanks for all the good thoughts.

I have given Probios in the past after a hefty/prolonged course of antibiotics.

ETA: https://www.smartpakequine.com/ps/probios-powder-5168

ETA 2: Canā€™t recall whether it was during or after. But during couldnā€™t hurt.

Sending along a few more jingles for the Fat Man this afternoon. And for you. They wreck our nerves donā€™t they?

Jingles for your big guy. And for you. I donā€™t think it hurts to add a probiotic during antibiotic treatment. Hope he feels better soon. Those pics would have me kicking too- ouch.

Yes! Thank you for asking!!!

Fat man seems to be doing ok, knock on wood. Vet was very pleased at his recheck with the progress. We figured out that if we slip a short Davis soaking boot on the hind foot and use a small water bottle to fill it with the Epsom solution we manage to stay pretty dry and he canā€™t kick it off.

Not out of the woods until it heals completely but so far so good.

He is walking sound on it, so thatā€™s a good sign too. Obviously we arenā€™t working him or anything but walking on it without gimping is definitely progress!

Here to say we officially survived the wrapping and soaking process. He has been cleared to be off the antibiotics so here is hoping.

Iā€™m still nervous when he goes off of them since weā€™ll find out if thereā€™s anything brewing at that point but he canā€™t stay on them forever.

Heā€™s still sound, and has learned to love his little soaking routine. He gets to eat hay in the barn aisle while we soak, he gets lots of scratches to distract him from the wrapping process and then cookies to round it out.

I have a feeling he is going to be very put out this evening if we do not do at least some of those things  But I donā€™t need a malingerer, or to have him be injured so here is hoping.

Thanks for the jingles everyone, I may sound superstitious but Iā€™m sure they helped!

Sending a jingle for an uneventful discontinuation (is that a word real word? sounds funny) of the antibiotics. Iā€™m about to do the same thing with my mini and Iā€™m a nervous wreck.

Many hugs to you and jingles for the mini!

I thought I was going to feel a lot more ā€œyay! No more crushing medsā€ but instead Iā€™m like ā€œwhy are you warm under your maneā€. But itā€™s been in the high 80s and super humid, and he has a very thick, very long, double mane so of course he would be hot under his mane.

I think itā€™s the fact that I canā€™t see it, as well. With my last puncture wound horse (the old crippled man) I could see the puncture (it was on his thigh) and I was flushing it daily and poking around in it so it was easy for me to tell what was going on.

And then - with other injuries that have gotten infected through the years that Iā€™ve owned horses, the smell has been very strong, but this smells like stinky foot and Iā€™m not sure, if itā€™s sealed within such a strong structure, that the smell would reach me. I rely on my nose for infection.

The hoof is just a black box of terror. Canā€™t really see what may be brewing in there. Maybe canā€™t smell it. sigh Someone needs to invent some sort of horse owner foot examination tool. Like X-rays only less expensive.

Thanks for the jingles for my mini! Itā€™s been a long road with his teeth and sinus and then he needed the surgical site where the sinus surgery was debrided last week. My nerves are shot.

Soooooā€¦the fat man is freaking me out.

He has patchy sweat in his groin on the side where he injured his foot. However, the foot is totally cool, no swelling in the leg etc.

We did just pull his front shoes (he was barefoot behind) and I think his fronts feel a little warm. No digital pulses, but I think he is a little uncomfortable. We pulled front shoes because he is not particularly fun to shoe and we arenā€™t going to be riding for awhile due to my issues.

So do I assume he might be a touch sore due to the shoes and bute? Do I worry about the foot and hit him with antibiotics yet again? Is it neither of those things and did his buddy kick him? Temp is slightly warm but still within the range of normal.

He is not distressed. Still has a hearty appetite. Of course he was eating fine with a big azz nail in his foot so Iā€™m not sure that says anything. The only indication anything was wrong when he had a nail in there was the kicking.
