JRT/Rat Terrier in Monterey, CA

**edited; this is a JRT/Rat terrier cross, maybe full Rat terrier?? Photos below.

Can anyone help network here.

Dear Daughter emailed and last night a runaway JRT showed up at her home near the Navy base. She is calling her “Oscarette” because she showed up last night as Uggie was winning an Oscar. The female JRT had on a too tight nylon collar and a too tight shock collar. She is an aged dog with a graying muzzle and maybe the beginning of cataracts. The sweet dog has been perfect with her cat and their massive, but young, German Shepard. She walks on a leash though she seems arthritic and has trouble chewing- probably bad molars.

Based on the dogs body condition Dear Daughter thinks the dog has been loose for less than a week. She called vet clinics within her area and none had clients who had reported missing such a dog. No flyers in the area and nothing on Craigs list for someone looking for such a dog.

The local SPCA does have to euthanize if a pet isn’t placed. Because this old girl has been so sweet- she seems crate trained- Dear Daughter would like to try and rehome Oscarette herself rather than take a chance with the SPCA. She can’t keep the dog- they leave for her husbands station at Pearl Harbor and one dog is already extremely expensive to fly over and quarantine.

Anyone have leads in Monterey for someone who could help an old girl out? Dear Daughter is taking more photos this evening. Anyone?

Has she tried pet finder or anything else? I understand she can’t keep her, but would feel awful if her long time family is looking for her and they just haven’t connected and crossed paths yet.

How long can she keep her while looking for her family? Maybe a caveat that if the owner comes forward she’d need to be reunited and given up.

Wish I were closer, I’d take her in. My 15 year old JTR male crossed the bridge in late January and I have a very lonely 10 year old female who’d probably love another female to talk about knitting with in her old age.

Here are photos and contact info. She has changed her mind and says now she is maybe a JRT/Rat terrier cross.

She has already emotionally banked with this old girl so she’ll keep her for awhile for sure but she knows it can’t be long term. For now Oscarette is content to eat, drink and snooze in the house.

Contact Russell Rescue in CA and see if they can offer any advice or placement assistance. They most likely will at least do a courtesy posting for you on their site.

With a shock collar on, I would guess she escaped from those yards fenced with electronic collars to keep the dog in, which are worthless to really keep dogs in, unless closely supervised.

Try to find the owners a bit longer, maybe see if some local TV station will put her up in their pet minute, where they have dogs for adoption.
The local government shelter should be able to help you with that.

She looks like a toy fox terrier/JRT cross, or maybe even italian greyhound/JRT cross.
I would guess rat terrier/JRT cross would be a bit less leggy.

Has she had the dog scanned for a microchip? She can try Peace of Mind dog rescue but they can be expensive. The SPCA in Monterey doesn’t put time limits on their pets…as long as she isn’t suffering she should be able to find a home. Although there aren’t many adopters out there looking for elderly dogs there are a handful of gold-hearted people willing to take one on.

I was also going to ask about a microchip as well.

There is also BAEN to try as well. They have a rescue/rehome section to post this sweet girl’s info:

I asked her about getting the dog scanned for a microchip. Dear Daughter said both collars were too tight on the dogs neck. When she removed the shock collar the prongs left marks in the dogs neck. The toenails were curling under the dogs paws because they had not been trimmed. She has been able to trim them back a little bit which has helped the dog walk better.

So whether the owners were kind but not knowledgeable or plain neglectful isn’t known but she isn’t looking for them. Likewise, nothing has been posted in any local “Lost” forum or board or called in to any local vet clinic so she hasn’t seen evidence of someone working their fanny off night and day to find the old girl. If she finds a “lost” ad that matches the dogs description I’m sure she will reply to it and scope out the owners to see which of the above types they are. If they are someone who wants to right by the old girl she will help them. If they are the “well the old girl lives outside and does fine by herself” she won’t turn her over. She was raised by us and in our home our old and infirm critters get accomodations for their needs.

I will pass along the local links you all have shared. BLBGP, thanks for the correction on the Monterey SPCA. She said it was a great group but they had a time limit, understandably. I’ll have her recheck her facts on them.

Understood. Hope she’s able to find a nice home. She’s a cutie with a sweet face.

DOH! I moved! No longer in the fire ant capitol of the world!

i was going to say toy fox terrier/jrt mix as well…those tiny little mouse-like feet look more like my toy fox terriers than my jrt…
she sure looks like a sweet thing…i took a free rescue from a dog rescue because she is a senior, and they didn’t think anyone would take her unless she was free…she was about 12 at the time,a rat terrier mix, so i figured even at 12, she’s going to still have many years left…that was almost 18 months ago, and she is in better shape than ever, with better diet and lots of exercise with my other small dogs…
senior dogs are soooooooooooooooo sweet, and tiny one like that would be no trouble…poor thing…i thought there was a minimum poundage to use shock collars??
get pilots and paws to bring her to pa and i will keep her for the rest of her life…

I had a pure Rat Terrier that could’ve been her brother. My dog came from a local shelter (I was their Jack Russell “go to”) so of course they’d called him “Jack” <shudders>. He was the worst looking Russell I’d ever seen. But a week later, I saw a Rat Terrier in a dog encyclopedia. Darned if Jack wasn’t the spitting image of the dog in the photos. So he was a terrible Russell, but a fine looking Rat!

She looks so sad. As if she knows she really doesn’t really belong there and is sorry to be causing such trouble.

wow what do you know - a ride from CA to FL!

Looks like meupatdoes already noticed it!

Hey wait a minute, I was trying to rehome the dog and I see a conspiracy here to bring her to Kansas!!!

I did look at the photo my daughter took of the shock collar that the dog was wearing when she found her. If the photos on the one website are accurate with the buckles verses clasp used to keep the collar on, it appears to be an anti-barking collar verses one to use with an underground fence. Thoses are labeled for dogs 20# and up and I bet she is barely 20# soaking wet. :frowning:

I fully support this conspiracy!

Hubba and I have been talking all day after getting updates from Dear Daughter who reports that Oscarette is as sweet as she can be. Each day she is has opened up a little more and now wags her short tail a little bit. We are going to bring her here to our home.

I’ll check with SuzieQ and see if we if there is anything possible with her. I’m afraid her start point in CA is waaaay far south from where Dear Daughter is.

Does anyone recommend a particular airline? Can you ship a dog without being a passenger on the flight? Pro’s or con’s?

Oh that is so awesome of you!

Make sure that Dear Daughter follows the law in her jurisdiction. Many areas have certain steps and time frames that must be followed before the finder can legally do anything (such as rehoming) a found animal.

Here in my county I would have to make an official found report with animal control and wait 30 days after that report before I could legally rehome a dog I found. If I didn’t make an official found report, and/or I didn’t wait the 30 days before rehoming, I could be charged with theft if an owner ever stepped forward.

I would hate to see a Good Samaritan kicked in the butt for trying to do the right thing. So have Dear Daughter check what her jurisdiction considers her legal responsibility as the finder before doing anything. Hopefully she’ll get the all clear and can go ahead with her rehoming effort.

Very good points Sheilah, thank you.
