Mandy Pope bought the most expensive lot of the day for $2.2 million.

Hip No. 169. Colt by Gun Runner - Princesa Carolina (Tapit).

And the Rachel’s Valentina filly appears to be heading to Japan. North Hills is the buyer and they’re a Japanese outfit.

Are they doing the Keeneland sales in the same place? Or is there a new building involved? I saw a video on Facebook that looked like a different setting to me.

It’s the same building but Keeneland has changed a lot of things in the auction pavilion since they held their last “major” sale in January. Keeneland is also putting up new buildings and renovating existing structures (mainly around the paddock). So everything looks different at the moment and much of the area around the pavilion is simply blocked off.

Thanks.

I saw the new building under construction when I was there about a month ago, so I was wondering if they had managed to finish it that quickly, which seemed unlikely.

The new building is going to be an administration building. Those offices are currently in the clubhouse/grandstand building and will move when it’s finished. The updated auction pavilion will remain the center of the auction activity.

Curlin - Songbird filly RNA’d at $375K. Songbird’s foals so far have not exactly burned up the racetrack; of 4 who are racing age, only one has started and hasn’t won.

I would love to know who the underbidder was!

I don’t know. @LaurieB might know.

I’m guessing Zedan or Magnier, or perhaps some buyers who were hoping to split up that investment for a stallion prospect.

Stonestreet may have wanted to keep a part of him since she bred him, but when a yearling reaches that price?

Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm

She also purchased the session-topper Monday—Hip 169, for $2.2M

I know Pope was the buyer - I’m curious about who put in the penultimate bid. The “second place” bidder, so to speak. Sometimes that information gets shared.

When you’re there, depending where you’re sitting/standing, you can often see who’s bidding. But in this case, the underbidder was bidding by phone so there was nothing to see, and Keeneland hasn’t released who it was.

if they were not bum high, you’d figure they were old seasoned campaigners.
I think they need to be let down from the sale barn once they get to their destination.

Unfortunately, they will be put to work before long.
