I hope this isn’t a repeat post, but this is a super story about Mucho Macho Man
As for Durkin, I think he’s slipped a bit in the past few years and I’m glad he’s stepping down sooner rather than later. He has given us some amazing race calls over the years and when he’s on his game he’s still fantastic. I like the idea of Collmus calling the TC races.

Still outside looking in? Silver Medallion and Anthony’s Cross, in that order.[/QUOTE]
And the next horse on the bubble is ruled out.
4-27: Silver Medallion is no longer under consideration per trainer Steve Asmussen.
That means Anthony’s Cross will get in if there is one more defection within the Top 20. Anthony’s Cross is based at Hollywood Park and will work there on Sunday, trainer Eoin Harty said.
With Master of Hounds there are some odd remarks from his camp suggesting maybe keeping him in England.
TB Times 4-26-11 “Master of Hounds still possible for Two Thousand Guineas”
There is a flight booked to ship him to Louisville on May 2nd but that’s quite a ways off and things could change with him crossing the pond.
UPDATE: Calvin Borel gets the mount for Twice the Appeal
Borel replaces Christian Santiago Reyes, who rode Twice the Appeal to victory in the Sunland Derby.
CONFIRMED
NBC Sports Announces: Larry Collmus to replace Tom Durkin as Triple Crown announcer
This year’s Derby is scheduled for May 7. The Preakness is scheduled for May 21, and the Belmont Stakes is on June 11. All three races will be televised by NBC Sports this year.
Collmus said in an interview on Wednesday that being selected to call the races “was a dream come true.”
“I’ve been calling the races since I was 18 years old, and it’s all I’ve ever dreamed about,” Collmus said. “It’s incredibly exciting.”
Mike Repole talks about Uncle Mo
“When he flew in a day late from Florida he was off his feed a little for two days, but Todd says most horses who fly to another track to run will get off their feed a little. He was a little bit better on Friday and the Wood was on Saturday. He loses by a length and a quarter and runs a 92 Beyer, which is better than a lot of the other preps. Dr. Steve Allday checked him out and said he was perfectly sound. Todd felt it had to be something internal, so we had him checked out by Dr. Doug Byars and a great team of vets and that’s when they found the GI inflammation. He’s been on medication and his appetite is up, his energy is up, and after today’s work his performance is up. Compared to where we were, Todd and I couldn’t be more happy with where we are right now. We just need 12 more of these kinds of days.”
On the topic of the broadcast team for television, NBC Sports has announced their team for the Triple Crown and also disclosed what coverage will be shared on Versus (“Vs.”) Channel.

Added for this year’s expanded coverage are race caller Larry Collmus, the track announcer at Gulfstream Park and Monmouth Park who replaces Tom Durkin; Laffit Pincay, III, son of Hall-of-Fame jockey Laffit Pincay, Jr., will host the coverage on VERSUS; veteran horse racing analyst Randy Moss; the Daily Racing Form’s Jay Privman.

Nine horses to run under the lights at Churchill Downs on opening day (night) for the Grade 3 The Cliff’s Edge Derby Trial @ 1 mile
Technically two of the runners could vault into the KY Derby a week later ($130k in graded money to the winner) but their connections said if they win, the horses will not be wheeled back that quickly.
PP. Horse, Jockey
Least anyone forgets - Don’t Get Mad in 2005 (with Gary Stevens up) won this race and then did run in the Kentucky Derby a week later finishing 4th just behind Afleet Alex, Closing Argument, and winner Giacomo.
While I don’t think I’ve seem much (any?) mention of this horse and his chances at least the jockey is getting recognition: #14 (on the graded & nominated list) Decisive Moment with $301,000.
Kerwin Clark gets first Kentucky Derby mount at age 52
After 36 years in the saddle, Kerwin Clark will ride in his first Kentucky Derby this year.
“It’s like a dream come true,” said Clark, who recently celebrated his 52nd birthday. “For something like this to happen at his point in my career, it is truly remarkable.”
While not a household name, Clark, a native of Louisiana, has won close to 2,600 career races.
“We just want to go up to Churchill and do Louisiana proud,” he said of the Derby. “I’m Cajun head to toe, I’ve got good kids, good grandkids, and I’m making a great living doing what I love to do. Mentally, physically, and financially, I’ve never been happier than I am right now.”
Versus vs. HRTV
Well, what are we to make of this? If we don’t happen to get Versus we are SOL? We can watch the repeat on Hrtv or TVG but with the on air talent from HRTV moving to Versus-well, I just don’t like it. I would rather it be on Bravo or MSNBC. Goodness! They have many many channels! Why put it on the one no one gets!!!
That’s unfortunate on not having Verses, which agreed is not exactly found everywhere. USA Network (another NBC Universal/Comcast holding) is more widely found and has been used for some racing coverage.
TVG isn’t partners with MDI (Preakness) or CDI (Oaks/Derby) so while some races will get shown on a delay I suspect you’ll see it on youtube before that.
HRTV will air, delayed, the Churchill and Pimlico racing. Both TVG and HRTV will air Belmont races on a delayed basis.
That said I think there may be a way on Verses to watch races on-line at their website. Comcast has been trying to make this more part of their bundle of offerings.
thanks for share good sharing
Uncle Mo’s Issue
Regarding Uncle Mo, what was originally called a gastrointestinal “infection” is now an “inflammation.” Does this sound like the colt has ulcers to anyone? Wonder what treatment he is getting.
Hope he is OK to run.

I thought I was also SOL, never heard of VS, but it turns out it is on Dish Network - Channel 151, if that’s how you get HRTV and TVG, and the shows mentioned are in the schedule.
However, this constant reduction to lower and lower coverage, to me, is a bad indicator of things to come. The media certainly isn’t healthy for horse racing. Perhaps if there were a clear, endearing favorite, or feel good story… even though those of us familiar with horse racing know there are thousands - but what can you expect with so much attention to “reality” -er, ah FAKE TV.
Dialed In worked this morning (THUR April 28th) at Palm Meadow in front of a group of fewer than a dozen onlookers shortly after 7 a.m. “at the nearly deserted Palm Meadows training center”.
This will be his last work (already rare event) and he’ll ship to Churchill “as late as possible”
With his regular work rider Maxine Correa aboard, Dialed In jogged back in front of those who had gathered on or near the clockers’ stand at the finish line to watch him breeze in company with his stakes-winning stablemate Miner’s Reserve. The two cantered slowly past the five-furlong marker before breaking off at the half-mile pole with Dialed In leaving about a half-length behind and on the outside of Miner’s Reserve.
The pair went off easily, going an opening eighth in 12.09 and a quarter in 24.47. Dialed In changed leads efficiently entering the stretch, completed three furlongs in 36.91, then gradually began to edge away, with Miner’s Reserve put to some mild urging inside the eighth pole. Dialed In was never asked to exert himself at any time.
At the wire, Dialed In was three lengths in front after completing his final furlong in a sharp 11.62, then galloped out another strong furlong to get five-eighths in 1:01.46 before pulling up six furlongs in 1:18.04.
Among the onlookers: trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey.

Yeah, as far as VS goes, if you aren’t a Comcast customer, you’re hosed. (And since no one who has any other option availble is likely to be a Comcast customer…Do they own DISH or something? It would explain why their available channels suck compared to DirecTV…)
I kind of understand not using Bravo, as it’s a dubious fit at best, but it would at least be a kind of excuse to get someone, anyone, to watch MSNBC (it’s not like there’s any reason to watch it now…)
Oh, well, I’ll be busy all day anyway and will probably just catch the race itself.
Thanks guys
I DO have the Dish, [and LOFF it!] But apparently,VS is on a higher tier than I am now paying dearly for. I might talk to someone at Dish to see if I can upgrade for the day [ha! probably not] if not, I will take Glimmers idea and watch online.
Does Comcast even offer the racing channels? My mother has CC ahd they have the worst lineup of channels ever. They recently cut TCM from her line up unless she wanted to pay an additional $20 a month. She is elderly and simply cannot pay that much. Also her better channels are only available om ONE tv! I used to say how much I HATED Comcast, but they have given me a deal for 20$ a month for high speed internet. So now, I mearly dislike them intensely~
Garret Gomez gets the mount on Master of Hounds.
just checked my DirecTV-----“Vs” is channel 603 (one up from TVG)
For those in the north east time warner area, we also have Vs. I think it’s 63 in Rochester.
While ideally I’d love to see every G1 get major network coverage, I do think Vs. is a step up from Bravo. It’s actually a SPORTS channel, as opposed to a lifestyle-n-reality show trainwreck. Treating the race as a legitimate sporting competition does quite a bit more for me than watching an obviously high Bethenny Frankel give out awards for best hat.
