Kentucky Derby 2011

Garrett Gomez

I see he has been named to Master of Hounds. [tip of the hat to Glimmer:D]. Well, he rode at Keeneland the whole [short] meet. And he is starting off at CD. I thought he wanted to stay in So Cal. I have become a huge fan of his and am just wondering whats up with that? Isn’t that why he changed agents?

Bits and pieces following the Rolex 3D and end of the Keeneland meet …

Even if there is a defection Anthony’s Cross will not go to the Kentucky Derby.

Anthony’s Cross “has battled a temperature,” said [trainer Eoin Harty]. “The weather back there in Kentucky is terrible. I’d have to work him and ship him [Tuesday], and there is no guarantee he would get in. When you press the issue, it usually comes back to haunt you. Sometimes it’s not meant to be.”

That put’s Ken & Sarah Ramsey’s Derby Kitten at #21 and in if there is a defection before the Wed morning cutoff.

Jockey assignment: Rafael Bejarano gets the nod on longshot Watch Me Go.

Mike Repole, owner of Uncle Mo, has made an odd throw down of sorts towards those who might dismiss his horse in the Derby. If Mo isn’t the wagering favorite then he’ll inject his own funds to tilt the pool to make him such. That is unique - and silly if he really intends that to be the case:

“If he’s not going off the favorite, I’ll make him the favorite,” said Repole, who has been known to play a little at the windows.

Sunday (May 1) Archarcharch worked at Churchill Downs impressively. Working five furlongs in 59.36 seconds - per the DRF’s clocker Mike Welsch:

The Arkansas Derby winner was easily the more impressive of the two Derby workers on site at Churchill Downs. For a horse who did not appear very comfortable training over a wet track earlier in the week, Archarcharch made a nice turnabout while asked for something a little serious on Friday.

And his jockey Jon Court is on fire. He has 2 wins and 2 second on opening night (Apr 30th) at Churchill so he’ll clearly feeling confident.

VS is not in my DISH package either. But I will be away from TV that day anyway, and wonder if it will be online where I could watch on my smartphone? Will NBC show it online? Or must I wait for the rerun video?

I forgot to copy the link, but just read that r heat lightning is out of the oaks after having heat in her knee this morning. Too bad, I liked Joyful Victory all along anyways, but it was sure a contentious field with R Heat Lightning as well. Glad her connections are doing right by her. I am interested to see how Bafferts filly, Plum Pretty runs.

Actually in my perfect world Larry Jones would put the filly in the Derby and I would bet the heck out of her.

The Derby is on NBC so that’s not changing.

Verses gets the Oaks and undercard racing both days. I wouldn’t bank on NBC airing the Oaks unless the win is something overly remarkable. So your best bet is to look for it on the kentuckyoaks.com site, youtube, DRF.com etc

I don’t think the Derby has quite gotten that advanced to be viewed on the smartphone - the Breeders’ Cup I think has done some personal device broadcasting - but poke around the office Derby site to confirm.

open up a TVG account and you can watch the derby live via their website. I am not iphone/smartphone/blackberry saavy so I can’t help you with that, but if you can watch live video streaming via the web through it than you should be able to via the tvg site.

Can I open an account without gamblling?

I don’t gamble, because I am AWFUL at it. As long as I don’t go to the races, I am fine!] Can I have an account to watch, Im betting no. They need to make money!

DRF 5-2-11 “Kentucky Derby labeled ‘promotional priority’ by NBC”

According to John Miller, chief media officer for NBC Universal Television Group, the Derby has been NBC’s highest rated show in terms of total viewership in the second quarter of each of the last two years. For that reason, and because NBC is now broadcasting all three Triple Crown races, NBC Universal has identified the Derby as a "promotional priority.’’

Miller pointed out that besides the Olympics, the Derby is the only sporting event that attracts more female viewers than males. Thus, NBC is doing a lot to promote the fashion, food, and style aspects of the event. NBC will also do features on Kathy Ritvo, the trainer of Mucho Macho Man, and Rose Napravnik, the rider of Pants On Fire.

The TODAY Show, the No.-1 rated morning news show, is featuring Derby segments each day this week, highlighting the food, fashion, celebrity and entertainment elements of the race.

NBC is also promoting its coverage of the race on Access Hollywood, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the E! network, and on CNBC, the company’s business channel.

Thanks For Share i like it.

UPDATE: Calvin Borel gets the mount for Twice the Appeal

Borel replaces Christian Santiago Reyes, who rode Twice the Appeal to victory in the Sunland Derby.[/QUOTE]

According to the Daily Racing Form’s chief clocker Mike Watchmaker he still thinks that Twice the Appeal should go off at loooong odds, but knows the Borel factor will attract bettors.

As for this year’s race, he sees Twice The Appeal’s résumé as too thin for him to be much lower than 50-1.

“If Borel were on a ‘liver’ horse than Twice The Appeal, I could see him getting knocked down,” Watchmaker said. “But I don’t know how much of an effect he is going to have on Twice the Appeal.”

CD Morning Line odds maker Mike Battaglia said with any other jockey on him that he’d make TTA 50-1, but with Calvin aboard its apt to be 20-1 the Morning Line.

Glimmer, I want to know who your choices are for the Derby!

Big story on Blood Horse about TVG

How they will be covering everything. I know they send the on air talent there every year but it looks like they are going to be able to cover it live. The article isn’t clear about whether or not you can watch on tv. I am guessing it will be as Jennywho said-online.
It worked out well for them last year at BC.

I’m waiting until the draw on Wed as position will have an impact and its still yet to be confirmed Uncle Mo will even race

That said I will undoubtedly wager on Archarcharch and Master of Hounds. A close friend has been hyping Pants On Fire. Short of there being traffic troubles or something truly unforeseen it would be hard not to imagine Dialed In at least hitting the board.

Someone asked about using mobile devices:

http://www.kentuckyderby.com/mobile-apps

It doesn’t appear the actual race can be watched live on a device.

One less runner … Steeplechase Times 5-3-11 “Toby’s Corner: End of the Road”

Dianne Cotter’s Bellamy Road colt Toby’s Corner has been withdrawn from consideration from the 137th Kentucky Derby on Saturday because of lameness in his left hind leg, according to published reports.

Looks like Ken & Sarah Ramsey’s Derby Kitten will now be a starter.

I’ll play without the PP–Nehro to win

Master of Hounds arrived to Louisville, KY from Ireland this morning.

The van arrived at Churchill Downs at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday morning following a flight that originated from Ireland on Monday. Owned by Mrs. John Magnier, Master of Hounds is making his second trip to Churchill. He was here in November for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

His van pulled into the stable area and was immediately taken to the quarantine barn, where he will reside during his stay here.

Presumably a simple notice just like this will be tacked up outside of his stall

The other “Irish Interest” per Irish Central in the Derby would be:

The other Irish interest is Santiva, trained by Waterford-born Eddie Kenneally who now works out of Kentucky. Santiva was favorite for the recent Blue Grass stakes, a key Kentucky Derby prep but ran disappointingly.

CBS News did an story May 1st on Rosie - length of the segment 2 min 52 sec or about 48 second longer than the Derby

CBS News Video: “Female jockey strives to make Kentucky Derby history”

Dialed In has been my favorite all the time, but I’m weighing other options.
