Lawsuit filed re: death of jumper near Aiken

I haven’t seen her or had any interaction with her since I bought a horse from her in 2018. And my impression was qualified by the fact that it was limited-- all I did was buy a horse she was representing. Nothing more.

She seems to still have a thriving business according to social media. It doesn’t appear that the lawsuit meaningfully impacted that.

Just bumping this thread since she is back in AIken and selling horses again. This case has not yet made it to court unfortunately, but she has two other unrelated cases pending.

If you gave your horse a choice to eat grass or participate in a one hour clinic session, which one do you figure he’d pick?

Are you therefore depriving him of food when you ask him to do the latter?

Wait, if I do not let my horse snack on grass while I am trying to ride in a grass field it is a welfare violation?
If I tie my horse up while I clean the stall, it is a welfare violation?

You said any…

I have witnessed Shannon abusing horses both on the ground and in the saddle
She should not be a trainer
Had a young buckskin horse Tied to a pole behind her barn and beat the crap out of it
I had to drive away - I didn’t want any dealings with her . I wish I had of reported her that day!

Has anything come of the Cobain case? And what about the other cases @mellsmom mentioned?

I don’t think it’s even gone to court yet but she returned to Aiken after a winter in another state and seemingly has a thriving business
Why hasn’t USEF been notified to at least suspend her?

Maybe they are aware but lack jurisdiction to act in this specific case?

The USEF should suspend her in the interim. This is a dead horse, savagely killed by a human, with his blood on her hands.

Up until recently, USEF didn’t have the ability to suspend anyone based on issues that happened off of showgrounds. Maybe someone should report her again.

I saw a sales ad of hers recently. She had the nerve to state the horse trailered well. I had to sit on my hands to keep from posting something.

I think she could be reported this way using the facts from the news article.
It is a horse welfare page which does not show up if I copy and paste bc it is members only.

Off showground abuse can only be enforced on actions occuring after the effective date of the new rule, not retroactively.

There is a place to now file a report on the USEF site

If it hasn’t gone to court yet ……couldn’t it still be considered ongoing and reportable??
It’s definitely worth the witness and owner making the effort

@mellsmom do you have contact with Sarah that you could make this suggestion ?

Nope, the abuse event itself would have to occur on or after the effective date of the rule.

As nice as it would be to have a look back., USEF cannot just arbitrarily pass rules, they must get buy-in from a lot of affiliates. And I’m pretty certain that any rule with a look back was doomed to not pass, so better to have the rule you can pass than the rule that never happens

Understandable
It’s only a matter of time it’s sounds like for Shannon - seems from the comments that she has a reputation of abusive behavior
Hopefully the new rule will make people do better
