Leadline Prizes

I show in Reined Cowhorse and our weekend shows are starting to offer leadline classes. I offered to purchase the prizes each monyh. What are some good ideas? We have boys and girls who will be entered. Here is what I have so far but need more ideas or for you to tell me if these are not good…

March- Drink Tumbler filled with horse treats and stickers
April-Horse Coloring Book, crayons, in a cute paper horse bag
May-(This maybe dumb) Flower Pot with carrot seeds, carrot bouquet and a stablemates type horse

I still need ideas for September and November. I am not a Rockefeller, so cute, inexpensive ideas are appreciated.

is this going to a tied class or will all entries be give the award?

My kids only did one lead line class which was back east and it was judged just as regular class with first through tenth place ribbons even though there were nearly twenty entries

When my kids used to go to the fun shows they would get cute pencil pouches with horse stickers or pencils and horse erasers, cookie cutters with a horse treat recipe, cute little horse books, coupons for ice cream, or a snack pack with something for them and the horse.

Oriental trading might have some neat budget friendly things.

Everyone will get a prize. We also have walk/trot, which is judged.

good source for all sorts of inexpensive things

I don’t think the flower pot is dumb, it will be useful and I bet some of them will try to grow the seeds.

Are you certain the same kids will be at all the shows? You can cycle back through the ideas. They have short attention spans in any case, or they will have lost the cup after three months. Just do different stickers and a different coloring book.

I was kinda thinking that too. Most of the same kids will be there but I did think about re doing the cup with a curry comb in it.

I am allegedly a bonafide grownup and yet if I could win one of those big leadline lollipops the size of a child’s head, I would take that over a ribbon any day.

Sticker books.

How much do you want to spend?

You can get plastic sunglasses that are customizable with your association’s logo. Depending how many you order you can get them pretty cheap.

Great idea! I’ll look into them!

I love all your ideas so far (even the flower pot). What fun prizes.

I also think it is fair to have the same prize used again at a later show.

A small stuffed horse is always a popular prize.
Fun colored lead rope.
Grooming tools sized for their little hands.
Child sized face mask with your organization’s logo.
Is candy or snacks ever a bad thing?

The leadline class at our shows usually runs at the same time as my division so I unfortunately never get to watch. But I usually see the kids and ponies walking by with their goodies.

Bunches of carrots or a couple apples are pretty standard. I remember seeing them all walking by with these big, fun sponges (animal and food shapes) and a scraper for bathing.

I like the sunglasses idea, and the cookie cutter.

If there’s a food truck or concession at the show you could give them all a coupon for a couple bucks.

really not appreciated in a lead line class LOL

maybe get some $2 bills for them to spend … we used to use these to show a town/city where we had a horse show how much the show impacted the town’s economy

At one of the local shows I go to, the leadline kids always get candy as a prize. A lollipop or a few little candies in a bag. When I was still working as a children’s librarian, I used candy as a Summer Reading prize and yes, just about everyone loved it!

@luvmyhackney mentioned Oriental Trading Co. and that was one of my standbys as a librarian. Lots of cute things for prizes. Rolls of stickers that you can cut up and hand out, small toys, temporary tattoos, party goods like hats, favors, everything under the sun you can imagine. Definitely check them out!

Depends who you talk to. Lots of kids would be pretty excited to see that they can run down to the concession after their class and pick something out. Especially if their parents packed a lunch and snacks to save money.

I was at a local schooling show where they gave away jars of bubbles. I thought that was a fun idea.

I love the carrot seeds idea!

At our local shows they have a basket of stuffed animals for the children to chose from. Usually horses but not always. I believe someone goes to Good Will or something similar and buys them there at very little cost.

Brilliant!

I still have the hoofpick I won from my first show!

I think Clanter meant that “a couple bucks” might dislodge the leadline participants!
