Let's talk (more) about the adult equitation

Oh yeah. I will. If for nothing else, just for some mileage. I mean, if I’m really honest, this is all just a reason for me to buy more show coats. I have a pretty one, but it’s too flashy for the Eq ring, so obviously I need a navy one. And maybe I’ll go ahead and get that grey one…

And contour pads. ALL the contour pads!!!

And one can never have too many pairs of Trophy Hunters, or Essex shirts, or flamboyant Zocks.

And if you’re going to go all out, then maybe Toby can deign to wear a D-ring

Oh please. I’ve been collecting show shirts (most Essex) since starting at the Tack Exchange. I can’t help it.
And then there’s the fashion…do I HAVE to find a D ring or go in a pelham to look the part?? We really like our little loose ring! All said thoroughly tongue in cheek!
Full cheek would work too

I’m looking forward to moving to VA hopefully soon. It seems so much more h/j friendly than where I live in TN. This sounds like a lot of fun!

Good luck!

I love the adult eq! Unfortunately in my area only the 2’6 really fills.

YB shoot - no reason why Toby can’t do some of the hunter classes - shoot you’d probably be a star at 3’ at some of the local shows and totally agree w/ the post mentioning the Derbies. Loch Moy show series wouldn’ve been a great venue for your to get your toes wet - there might be some classes at their finals so check ou the website. What’s Toby’s breeding? Is he a TB - if so the TB incentive shows might be something to look into as well. If you ever want a laid back schooling show to practice come to Cindy Lytles schooling shows.

I hope that you will look into the Mid-Atlantic Equitation Festival held in November at Prince Georges Equestrian Center. It does not take showing every week to qualify for the championship classes and I think you will find the show to be comparable in quality to any major indoor horse show.
We are finding that particularly due to the emphasis on equitation in the college programs that the adult EQ classes are becoming much more popular and expect this trend to continue.

I hope that you will look into perhaps participating in the Mid-Atlantic Equitation Festival in November. It is held at the Prince Georges equestrian Center all indoors in the Coliseum. It takes very little to qualify, unlike many year end finals. I think you will find the event comparable to any major indoor show on the east coast.
Classes start at 2’6" for both adult and junior riders. Visit the website in my signature below to see more about the event. There is also a great scholarship program open to the public of up to $2500.
If not this year, it may be a great goal for you next year. We are finding a renewed interest in the adult equitation perhaps due to the collegiate equitation programs. I think you will find most EQ classes filling in most shows in VA and MD.

NCHJA also has adult medal finals – for the A shows (Bryan Jones Medal) and C shows.

I will look into this! Thanks!

Toby is a full TB and will eventually get to some TB shows (he has a TIP number from his eventing days) at some point. I’m sure we’ll play around with different things to try and do. It’s funny what a huge relief it is to not feel like I MUST be doing XYZ anymore to chase some huge all encompassing goal! Now I can just play with my horse and enjoy him and see what’s fun.

For some of these things, what all do I need for memberships and horse ID? USEF, USHJA, VHSA? MHSA if we pursue that? Anything else?

We have TIP cash award for best OTTB TIP equitation horse, as well. Big Perpetual trophy that you and your horse 's name will be on forever. Our event is USEF recognized, but you do not need to qualify at rated shows, or necessarily be a USEF member. The others are all optional.

You would need membership in whatever organization. For example, to qualify for the finals in the NCHJA medal mentioned above, you need to be a member of NCHJA. If you are showing at A shows, then you’ll want to have a USEF#. Your horse doesn’t have to be registered because he is not earning points in the equitation. But I dunno about horse recording in a situation like the best horse award chunky munky mentioned.

I think it is a great idea-- it also allows you to really focus and work on your form as it relates to functiion.

To compete as an amateur you’ll need a USEF membership and check the “amateur” box. As far as I know all of these adult medals are for amateurs. Otherwise you’ll need VHSA or MHSA for those shows. USHJA is tricky - I don’t think you need it for A shows but you might get charged a non-member fee.

USEF isn’t a biggie, since I’m already a member (and about to start the AA reinstatement process). But I need to get my ducks in a row with all the other memberships! Obviously, I have a few months, but memberships and horse ids get pricey after awhile.

Wow I can’t believe it’s been a year since your injury … I remember reading the posts and watching the video. Glad you’re better and feeling well!

I switch back and forth btw low level eventing and the jumper/eq ring. I always LOVED the equitation - it’s challenging, technical, you get to ride a “test” - so fun! Not sure about the classes filling - we don’t even have a really good rated show around here except at HITS. There are plenty of schooling shows, and I’m not even sure if they offer the adult eq - I’ll have to look into that.

Adult jumpers always seem to fill around here; and no it’s not a hell-bent-for-glory event. Yes if you make the jump off you will need to pick up a snappy pace, but cornering well and setting up properly to the fences is often what wins the class. AND you get money! Yay!

Honestly, I just get the memberships as I need them. Signing up for 10 different memberships in January really sucks

It’s been quite the year! Amazingly, breaking my leg was one of the best things to happen to me! And I think to Toby. He’s a much more settled pony nowadays (partly because we’re not galloping and killing ourselves to stay on our game…but I’m sure partly because i’m much happier!). I was playing around this morning on making him go like a hunter…he was like “this is a piece of cake!”

I don’t know where you are, but a lot of VHSA associate shows off the medal classes, so ou can do them without the expensive of a rates shows.

I have horse shows on the brain now!!! I wanna go to a show and wear my pretty hunt coat and try to be perfect!

VHSA memberships.

You do not need to be a VHSA member to show at the VHSA “Associate” shows. There is no non-member fee.

But if you want to qualify for finals or year end points, you and the horse need to be members.

For the horse, it is a one-time fee (good at least as long as you own the horse).

For the rider it is an annual membership.

You do not need to join USHJA unless you go to a USEF recognized show. Then you will need both USEF and USHJA memberships for you and the horse (in addition to the USEF memberships you already have).

Don’t know about the other organizations.

Go ahead and have fun. Back when I realized tha Music was NEVER going to be reliable cross country I dabbled in VHSA hunters with her for a couple of years (eventually switched to dressage with her). Lots harder than it looks, but I had fun and the people were friendly, even when I clearly “looked like an eventer”.
