lillie Keenan 19??
Practical Horseman posted a photo of Michael Hughes from last weekend and there are a bunch of ENRAGED commenters picking apart his eq and generally aghast that he got third.

While, granted, it’s not the best pic of his position, I would love to crowdfund an event where all the internet haters could try to ride an eq course from one of the finals and see how successful they are. Hell, let’s even lend them nice horses to do it!

People who say “this person isn’t a good rider/didn’t deserve to pin in an eq class because of this one moment in time” are as bad as people who think riding isn’t a sport because the horse does all the work.
Helmets will be optional, cowboy hats preferred.

The people that comment on the Facebook posts from PH are a special breed. They are the ones that thought Beezie was making a “grand standing” by being the only one to participate in the victory gallop at WEG from the team medals. They also went on and on about how untrained the three other horses clearly were and had no business being at WEG since they get riled up in a victory gallop and how their riders clearly can’t ride properly. That came from the natural horsemanship Parelli freaks.

Then there are the ones that tear apart Jessica Springsteen on every photograph that gets posted of her by PH. “Her daddy bought her those wins/nice horses, she can’t REALLY ride. She walked into the arena without her horse to get her Open Jumper championship awards, so she doesn’t really care about the horses, she’s just a spoiled rich girl.” It’s only said about her though. Only because she has a famous last name. Nobody says anything nasty like that about Lillie Keenan, Katie Dinan or Paige Johnson who definitely have more money backing them. Jennifer Gates and Georgina Bloomberg get the same treatment as well. Jealously is a horrible thing.
I’d like to see the people who tear Jessica, Georgina and Jennifer apart get on their horses and see how well they ride them! Now that would be something to see!

. . .
I was looking for another vid, another big eq work off, without stirrups, where there was a halt in the middle of a four stride line which she executed beautifully. (Anyone remember which that was, I’d love to see it again.) . . .

Success is the best revenge! Go, Lillie!
Are you referring to the finals where Lillie chose to stop her horse pointing into the rail? That was either the Medal or the Maclay, I did not stop to look at the video you posted, as I am at work. Regardless, Lillie is always a joy to watch, lots of the others also ride beautifully but Lillie is so smart in her decision-making, and no one performs as well as she does under pressure.

But those poor horses :frowning:

Is this the video?

Not perfect, but damn smooth compared to some of the others (who are still miles and miles above me). That was a helluva work off test.

Anyone who made is to the Maclay finals in Kentucky is already a winner in my book. They ride at a level of very high skill, on challenging courses, with enough consistency to make it to the finals. Well done to them. There is unfortunately a lot of snarkiness in the horse world. Some people’s opinions are not worth oxygen it takes to utter them-- mean spirited ones, for instance. No one should be put through an internet drubbing on their riding-- and certainly not children-- these junior riders are still juniors after all-- and while mean spirited comments would be hurtful to anyone, kids might not yet have the life perspective that hopefully arrives at some point in adulthood that lets you shrug off such things and realize they aren’t worth the notice. Teen age years can be rife with angst, things that seem little to adults can be massive to teenagers. Mean spirited commentators might do well to realize that there is a human being on the receiving end of their comments…

That was it, thanks, leighbo. Still impressive. One slightly sticky fence, and one over cued change, but nailed the halt in the line, the trot fence, the counter canter and the sequential simple changes. IIRC, she was the only one of the finalists who figured out how to fit in all the simple changes?

Soooo (sarcasm font) sometime in the last 9 years, that kid learned to ride!!!

FWIW, I saw the eq final live in DC two weeks ago. Michael Hughes richly deserved to move up and win, his trip was beautiful. Hunter’s and Mackayla’s were good, but his was quiet, flowing with no obvious adjustments. And contrary to some of the commentary here, he has a particularly lovely release - low on the neck, not the faux hover above the neck, and a little huntery drape in the rein in the air.

If somebody got a bad photo of THAT kid’s eq, well, then, no one is immune from a bad photo.

Just got my Dover yearly catalog. Anybody else see it and have déjà vu?

I looked at the cover and said to my puzzled husband “Oh boy…here we go again!!”

It’s Katie on a jumper!

That’s not what my cover is…

Ok, could somebody please post the new Dover catalog picture in question so we can get the popcorn ready?

There was almost a perfect repeat of the original Lillie thread a few years later with another very successful pony rider.

My cover is a cute kid on a roan. Katie Cohen rides Claire De Lune.

I haven’t seen my hard copy since I am still at my sister’s house recovering and my mail is not being forwarded.
I wanted to see, so looked online and the cover shown there, was the one with Katie Dinan on a gray jumper.

I’d love to see the kiddo on the pony! Does anyone have a link?

OK, I’ll spill the beans. It’s a child on a very cute pony, giving it her all and looking adorable…obviously a very good, game little rider…but with spurs on and her foot turned out 90 degrees so that her heel (with spur) is sticking straight back into the pony’s side…just about an exact repeat of the picture of Lillie Keenan on the cover 10 years ago, doing the same thing, from which all the discussion ensued. I’m not offering any critique here, just saying what the picture is for those who did not get the catalogue.

Oh!

Well , hopefully the equitation critics will have learned their lesson (those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it etc …) and we won’t have people making fools of themselves again.

I’m sure if the pony was unhappy the child would be unceremoniously dumped in the dirt.

It should really be a given that picking on pony-riding children is not cool.

I’m sorry to hear that, and I’m glad she was able to put it behind her.

It amazes me the things people will say online. I can’t imagine they would say the same things to someone’s face.
Things said on line about others are the same things people will say behind others backs…

I still cannot grasp the reality of how mean and unhappy people are. I read on-line news etc and it is just unbelievable what people will write…

Kudos to Lillie for having the strength to push it aside and do what she loves. (and obviously good at)

So, guess we know who’s got the Maclay for 2022…
