List of Frozen Semen distributors:

While he is not on their list, KEC might be able to tell you if they can get him or who can…

I’m new here and getting into this thread late. Does anyone know where to find a distributor for frozen semen from the Nijhof stallion “Spielberg”? Any info about him would be helpful. His height and bloodlines would be great for my mare and my amateur riding abilities for training the foal. Thanks, Carolyn[/QUOTE]

Email them directly at info@team-nijhof.com
They speak very good English and it has been my experience that they respond quickly to email.

I happen to know a bit about the damline as it is also the damline of my foundation mares (Han stamm 624 aka Nogalte). I can’t seem to copy and paste the info here but if you’d like to read more about it you can on my mare’s page:

Speilburg looks like a lovely stallion.

Spielburg comes from a very successful Hanoverian mare line (Nogalte family) that has produced alot of good sport horses. I can’t seem to copy/paste the info here but if you want to read more about it you can read it on one of my broodmare pages (mare is from this family):

Has anyone dealt with Haras de Couvains (www.semilly.com)?

Hello everyone! I’ve read the forums here for several years for all the good information but only registered today. I thought it would be helpful to have feedback from experiences with frozen semen brokers in view of the expense and hassle of this method of breeding. This is my first experience with AI in any form so I am inexperienced with the method. I have had two foals from live cover of a different mare.

I have a 2001 Rotspon daughter (“Rose”) who I’ve known since she was a mere weanling. She’s a maiden but I’ve decided to try and breed her. After much research, I selected Sandro Hit for the sire. I purchased SH frozen semen from Global Equine Sires, largely based on the positive feedback from this forum.

I am working with the local well-reputed veterinary school’s theriogenology department for the breeding. As an aside, it was extremely difficult to identify anyone in my region that could competently handle the AI with frozen semen. Two of the places advertising this service that I called about it didn’t return my call. (One of which was a referral from someone else.)

The semen was shipped out without specific advice about the shipment / tracking info the day before Good Friday. I didn’t have a heads up on the expected delivery to let the vet school know to expect it. Fortunately, the vet school did have someone to accept delivery on Good Friday and transfer the semen into their storage. Once I realized that perhaps the semen arrived at the school on that Friday, I tried to call them to confirm that all was ok. However, since the school was technically closed for Good Friday, I wasn’t able to reach anyone there. So, I did lose some sleep that weekend worrying that the semen was sitting on the dock thawing. . .

The single dose delivered was 3 straws. I had called GES to inquire of SH and how many straws. They were in their car but thought it was 4. I did not call to confirm this prior to placing my order and 3 were delivered as the dose.

Rose ovulated today and was inseminated. The motility was 47%. The count was about 700MM sperm. So the viable dose was around 300MM sperm. The vet school said that their preferred dose is at least 400MM. We have our fingers crossed.

Good luck. Overall, I have had good experiences using frozen semen, and I would smile at 47% progressive motility. Even better, there have been many pregnancies using Sandro Hit, and you got enough semen. My fingers are crossed for you that you get a pregnancy. Breeding an older maiden with frozen can be something of an adventure.

Had a question as I am somewhat new to frozen semen purchases. Leaving names out of it, as we are planning next steps of potential action. Here is the scenario. Suppose you bought semen last year (10k+ paid for) and had it stored (for a fee) at the distributor, Then, this summer you requested for the straws to be shipped to a college for breaking down into ICSI doses, What should be the expectation be, as to the timing of this semen being shipped from the distributor to a college? Should a distributor be able to ship within a week, two weeks, three weeks, four weeks? Has anyone ever had a distributor not deliver, or deliver very very late after many contacts? Thank You - just struggling with how and why it is this hard and takes this long?

I had semen stored with a broker from last year until this spring. When I wanted the semen shipped, she apologized for not being able to ship until the first of the following week, which would have been a few days. Semen brokers can have a problem having dry shippers on hand during the really busy part of the semen, but I can’t imagine not being able to get the semen in a very timely fashion.

Thanks Clint! In my case, next Wednesday it will be 1 month of waiting - since initial request to ship it… We talked once in the process, and it was mentioned that they needed to get back a container (my terminology is likely off on container) and “then” we are next on the list to be shipped. (two weeks since last discussion) Something on this just doesn’t seem to add up for me, but I’m a first time frozen purchaser.

It doesn’t add it up. Semen brokers need a supply of dry shippers, because many people wait until the mare is ready to breed to ship frozen (why I have no idea, since the beauty of frozen is it can be there waiting for the mare), and then call in a panic. It may take a day or so to get shippers back, but waiting one month is a new one on me. You might try the forceful approach, because this time of year people want their semen NOW. I would actually be a little suspicious that the semen isn’t available.

Thank You! Seemed VERY ODD to me too. A friend of mine said the distributor probably never had it in the first place, or sold it along the way and doesn’t have the money to buy it. Some of it was very old sires who are no longer alive, so it was expensive. The lack of response from the broker is also so inconsiderate and Very Frustrating. Especially when the broker has many breeders who use them. When you trust companies and people it is sad when they do not delivery what has already been paid for. Appreciate your advice! Suppose they leave us no choice but to pursue the next logical step of legal action…

Good luck. Can you message me who this broker is?
