Looking for complete feed suitable for a senior with NSC under 10 - cushings horse

…I could go as high as maybe 15.

I have done searches and have googled charts and other compiled information. However, they are all over 5 years old. I can find low NSC horse feed, however they are not COMPLETE FEEDS (my horse has bad teeth and I would prefer a complete feed). I thought about doing beet pulp and a ration balancer with a fat supplement, but at the moment, hes decided beet pulp is undesirable - hopefully just due to the heat. He was eating TC senior, but is a picky eater and is not happy with the inconsistency from bag to bag.

Just looking for some ideas. I cannot do POULIN feed because there are no dealers near me. I looked into Stabul made by NUZU, but that feed store is over an hour away. I could make it work if I had to! But No one in my area knows anything about it.

Any suggestions? Success stories? My horse is 30 with nubs for teeth, yet at the moment does not like anything soaked. He is on 1 prascend (split into 1/2 am and pm tucked into his cheek). His weight is good, but hes been picky ever since starting the prascend. Maybe I should try compounded pergolide?

NOTE: This is the ACTIVE Senior, not the regular purina Sr…

Triple Crown Sr is a complete feed, I have used this for years.

Yep, I’ll second Triple Crown Senior. Been fabulous for my oldster with bad teeth.

And here’s the dilemma… I love it too. However, I have had bags of nice oily pellets with large chunks of beet pulp, and then I have had bags that are dry and crumbly. My horse is just picky enough that he doesn’t like the inconsistencies. I know they changed milling companies, and I didn’t think it would change the feed that much. However, I am uncomfortable with the drastic change between bags from the same store. So I am looking for an alternative. :frowning:

Given your location, do you have Southern States? If so, look into the ProElite Senior.

I’ve had good luck with Purina Strategy Healthy Edge. I have 2 guys on Prascend and Strategy HE is the only feed they will eat.

Do you mean under $10 maybe $15 ?

Think they are talking about NSC levels not price. Personally I’ve fed cheap feeds, and expensive really no difference health wise in horse.

OPs horse being Cushings probably can’t be fed sweet feed most are high nsc.

Triple crown has good feeds, but hate the senior feed in winter turns to brick.

Thank you. Someone in town suggested blue seal/sentinel feed. Has anyone used them for old, cushinoid horses?

Ah - I read it all wrong.

Thank you!

Seminole happy hoof? Huh? How old is that list? And does not have Purina Sr or Active Sr…

From looks of it that list was done in 2008.

Blue seal Dynasty XT pro is nsc 15.5 and similar to TC senior.

Yes, thats the problem I was running into. Everything was waaaay out of date. I tried to google purina senior active and couldnt find NSC.

Thank you for the blue seal info !

Second the ProElite. It is a complete feed, tests slightly lower than TC Senior in NSC (label shows slightly higher as that’s a max it could be on the fixed formula but in practice it’s less) and doesn’t have the consistency issues. It is beet pulp-based but I have no issues getting anyone to eat it, including one who picked the beet pulp out of TC Senior. We have a mare with Cushing’s on it and her vet is thrilled with how well she is doing.

I also was feeding TC Senior until the consistency got really wonky. I have a cushings pony with EOTRH and lousy/missing teeth. He will not eat anything mushy/wet. I switched to Sentinel LS. It’s a smidge higher than what you want but my horse is doing ok on it NSC- 16 (Starch- 10, WSC- 6)

Strategy, at least the new one with gastric support additive has scary high NSC. I just looked it up (amazingly Purina now provides that data) and it is 25% NSC.

You could also feed more alfalfa hay, less processed food, just enough to put medication in, for us thyroid supplement powder along with Pranscend.
Horse has been practically with no other than alfalfa hay, very little grain, for 4 years and looks, according to the vet, “fabulous”.

We also have here a complete feed, “Alfa-Pro”, that works very well for many horses.
