Looking for Info on Marina Genn

Hi all,

I am pretty new here, at least, postingwise, but I am soon moving up to the D.C. area and would like to hear from people who trained with Marina Genn. I am looking into barns.

I don’t know the board rules, but you can do this through PM or in this thread.

I would like to hear everything. The good and the bad.

Many thanks,

  • C

She is good.

Come on Merry, please give me a little more.

Thanks for answering though.

I have never ridden with her, but have audited a clinic or two. She’s originally Canadian.

I’m sure more people will jump in.

She operates “The American Academy Of Equestrian Sciences” which is out near Leesburg. Other than what has already been said here about her being Canadian, not much is really known about her. She seems to keep to herself and nobody is ever really seen out at her place.

I have a friend who worked for her (katybell some number or another on here). Other than being actually German (I think she got Canadian citizenship to ride for them?), I don’t know how she is as an instructor.

As of a few years ago, the side of her barn had “RIDING LESSONS & SUMMER CAMP” with a phone number painted on it. I just assumed it was a beginner lesson place.

I wouldn’t recvommend Marina’s place for boarding… It’s way too expensive by the time you add everything up. Also, coming from Germany Marina subscribes to the “mattress bedding” method in the winter - you only take out the obvious and just keep adding bedding - something hard to handle for the average American boarder.

Just my opinion…

Marina is german, and came to canada in the early 80s (?), she showed alot/successfully) and had a (young horse) auction there for some years. She only came to Virginia a short time ago (5-10 years??)

She was in or taught in Michigan alot before her move to VA and was a successful, well thought-of upper level dressage rider.

She still clinics here at a clients barn of mine. I don’t know a thing about her but can put you in touch with the the barn she clinics at. I understand she coomes regularly.

I took some lessons with Marina about 10 years ago. She was ok - back then she could trap you in a “walk & talk” session where she would try to relate her gymnastic background with riding. It wasn’t working for me, I figured I was paying for a training session, so just started working on my own and then she was somewhat helpful. Marina seemed to have a lot of knowledge, but maybe we just didn’t click. I was also not impressed that she spent much of our last lesson on her cell phone. Thus the decision of the last lesson. My experience is just that - my experience, we just didn’t click.

What I remember most vividly about her was I saw her in a clinic with Reiner Klimke, and he told her to raise her stirrups a hole, and she said no, and he said fine, your lesson is over.

Ouch.

I think that was '93 or '94. The announcer said she had a leg cramp. Klimke just walked away from her.

Marina has a very high opinion of herself and not everybody subscribed to that, including Herr Doktor Klimke.

Marina is German, born and raised there. Moved to Canada, and then came here.

She is not everybody’s cup of tea, but the woman knows her stuff.

I dare say, there are precious few trainers/instructors (even in NOVA) who can match her knowledge. So it may depend on what is important to you.

I actually do the same thing (Northeast) as do a couple of other barns in my area. We don’t use mats and dig the wet spots out daily. You don’t get that urine smell on the horses or their blankets. The shavings may not have that fresh out of the bag look but you get used to it. My barn is always full inspite of it!

Thanks people,

That was somewhat helpful. Those I want more info from will get a PM.

Hope you don’t mind.
