Lovestruck aka Violet Joy

Love the new videos. She’s a doll! Jingles for Jess.

Thank you. So many emotions today but you can’t help but laugh when she is being so silly.

Love the videos! We all need to watch playful foals right now.
Just curious - how did you decide on her second name?

Do you mean Joy? If so I wanted to name her Joy because her mom is Juliet and her grandma is Jess plus I thought we could all use some Joy right now. My daughter wanted to name her Violet so we just compromised and named her both. There are violets blooming all over right now so it is fitting. Remember, I was POSITIVE she was a colt so we did not have much in mind in terms of filly names so we had to scramble a bit. I have never once been wrong about the gender of my foals but it was bound to happen sooner or later.
His or her registered name was always going to be Lovestruck so we were good there. I got Juliet’s name from the Dire Straits song Romeo and Juliet. The first line is “A Lovestruck Romeo…”

A happy update on Grandma Jess this morning too. Her colic seems to have passed and they are starting to reintroduce hay which is a bit of a miracle. They originally thought she had a strangulation so there was no hope for survival without surgery but that must not have been the problem. I am so thankful for Deltawave for taking such good care of her and for giving her this chance to pull through.

Her name brought to my mind the Stevie Ray Vaughn song Lovestruck.

I can’t see any new video on your facebook. Maybe because I’m not a member?

Glad to hear your mare is recovering.

One of my favorite songs.

Great news on Jess!

Are you looking on my McDowell Racing Stables page? Everything is set to public so you should not have to be a member. You can’t post videos here directly so that is the easiest way for me.

Yes. You linked to it earlier. I can see that one just not a new one. Could be my ignorance about how facebook works. No sweat.

Hopefully just a minor setback but the vet was out for Violet tonight as her umbillicus is infected. Her umbilical cord didn’t break on it’s own so they had to break it and it has been thick ever since. We have been working on it this whole time but it isn’t getting better so she will be going to New Bolton for surgery either tomorrow or Wednesday. So far there is no sign of her going septic and we are hoping to keep it that way so she was started on IV and IM antibiotics tonight. This is a minor procedure but still scary, especially when she is so young.

Wow - congrats on a LOVELY filly  So nice for you to have a third generation of a mare line you love. Glad to read the placenta complications turned out ok, and your filly is thriving.

Her face does remind me of Lordanos - in a wonderful way! Very bright, lovely marking - it will contribute to a really nice engaged expression when she’s happy and into her job.

And as for double whorls… I’m a believer. My first pony had them, as did her filly. Both were remarkable, special horses. Complicated in some ways… but really talented wonderful little mares. And bays  I like all the old fashioned, fun, horse myth stuff like that though - it just gives you one more reason to love and treasure the beautiful animal you helped bring into the world. I don’t consider the “complicated” description a negative though. A talented, smart, opinionated mare with a good rider is a wonderful thing.

Violet’s surgery is around noon today, if it goes well she can come home tomorrow. I am distraught over the thought of stall resting her for two weeks as that is literally her entire life to date but we will get through this.

Surgery Jingles!

Violet’s surgery went well. They are keeping her until Friday as she needs IV antibiotics until then and her catheter makes that much easier to do there.

First your filly is beautiful!
I have been following your journey which has been full of wonderful information . But I’m not sure how you got from Golden Rule to Lordanos? The COTH article about Golden Rule says the 17.3 h 16 year old gelding is by unknown breeding? Or do I have the wrong Golden Rule ?

That’s interesting. I don’t remember where I saw it now but I definitely saw it. ETA Google comes up with a few references but here is one from Scott Stewart talking about him being by Lordanos.

Stewart is not entirely sure where the coloring comes from, but he suspects it has to do with the gelding’s sire, Lordanos. “A lot of Lordanos’ [offspring] have a lot of white, like Golden Rule my working horse has a lot of high white legs,” Stewart explained. “Some of them have a lot of white, so it’s somewhere in there!”

wow and Remarkable!!!
very impressive!!
Thank you for sharing your journey it has been so fun to follow!! And your baby is stunning !

Thanks! Wish we had gotten a little more of that white but she is a spitting image of her daddy so that is likely a good thing.
