Maclay Regional Results?

:lol:sounds great!!! Apparently not actually followed.
These are the rules (from the National Horse Show website) for deciding who to invite if someone declines- I don’t have time to crunch the numbers to determine if they’re being followed in this case, but it seems like there is a system in place other than just politics, and the rules are designed to prevent someone placing at the bottom of the class in one region from being invited if everyone else declines.

“If a qualified rider declines to compete in the finals, the rider with the next highest placing will receive an invitation to compete and said invitation will be provided to the next highest placing riders until the invitation is accepted and the spot filled. However, after the first qualified rider declines to compete in the finals, there shall only be one invitation provided for every ten competitors from a
regional. Example: if Region Q has 38 riders competing, then the invitation to compete at the national finals shall be provided to all those determined by the percentage formula and if any one of them declines, there shall be no more than two additional invitations provided in order to fill the spot which has been declined. Subsequent to one invitation being provided for every ten riders in the region, the invitation shall then go to the next rider from the regional which has the highest percentage of competitors. The final closing for entries will be 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on the first Friday of October, at the office of the National Horse Show, under such conditions as are specified in the prize list. The standby list for accepting Maclay Finalists will close on the Sunday of the WIHS which is the Sunday
before the Finals.”
Um, did you actually read all of what Jumper221 posted?

“Subsequent to one invitation being provided for every ten riders in the region, the invitation shall then go to the next rider from the regional which has the highest percentage of competitors.” Emphasis mine.

From what has been described on the forum, that’s exactly what happened. Sorry you didn’t qualify, but doesn’t appear to me that any rules have been broken, just that there are some sour grapes from someone who hoped to go and won’t this year.

Fortunately, even if this is your last year doing the equitation, life doesn’t end when you age out of the junior ranks and you can still have a great and happy riding career whether you go to Maclay finals or not

Thanks Super Shorty! I appreciate the question, condescending though it is. Indeed I read the rules multiple times before posting and lodging a complaint. And I have no personal stake in this in that I am so many years away (past) my own Maclay finals I need a magnifying glass to see them. But I deal in fairness in my job, and I ride, and this is just not fair. Sometimes rules need to be changed, and sometimes they don’t. I appreciate all of the input everyone has provided. You will all be heard! Thanks for your time in your thoughtful responses.

Aside from the fairness aspect, that passage reminds me of a horrible word math problem I would have dreaded in school many (many!) years ago.

<waves> Hi, Supershorty! Do you have spotty wifi in a tree somewhere?

My apologies that I came across that way, I just don’t see any rules being broken (as you were implying) with the way that things are being done. Do the rules need to be revised? Maybe… I don’t know. But I don’t think it’s right to be talking like the NHS has been shafting kids because of politics - the rules, as they are currently stated, appear to be being followed.

Hi, MHM! I have occasional spotty wifi for the next few weeks (and I’m even in a building as opposed to being in a tree/tent!)!

You mean something along the lines of, “if Trainer A leaves LAX in plane traveling however in the heck fast planes travel and Trainer B leaves KHP driving a van at 55 mph and Trainer C leaves NYC on a train traveling however fast trains go, which one will get to Harrisburg and have their set-up done first?”

Ah yes, and the answer I always came up with was something that made no sense, like “purple because aliens don’t wear hats.” as opposed to a numerical answer.

Are all of the regionals done at this point? Sorry for being so out of the loop, I barely know what day of the week it is.

You have Zone 7 and Region 7 mixed up.

Zone 7 produced your 2011 Maclay winner, Sarah Milliren, and your 2008 USEF winner, Kels Bonham, just FYI.
I know, I know Kels’s dad. Those girls did it the hard way. What was the first thing don Stewart did when he discovered Sarah? Get her the hell out of zone 7.

The one that sent the help ahead with the equipment truck!

Also, is there really something about the Maclay that makes it sooooo much more important than the Medal in the eyes of the kids doing it? When I was a junior, it was kind of a bigger deal to win the Medal (although it was a big deal to win either one, obviously)… then that TV show came out and I think maybe that changed the attitude toward the Maclay?
I was a junior in the 60s and yeah the Maclay (at least in my area, Region 2) was considered the more prestigious for sure although any junior would be thrilled to win either. This was before USET had a finals and WIHS EQuitation Championship didn’t exist.

I think all the years the Maclay was at The Garden also made it seem a little more glamorous, if that’s the right word. Plus it was the last one of the year, so it was the big dramatic finish to the season.

I never knew until relatively recently that the Medal and Maclay finals used to both be at The Garden on the same weekend. That was before my time.

I do wonder if the same judges presided over both finals then?

yes Medal was on Saturday and Maclay on Sunday, plus GoodHands saddle seat final that same weekend as
well, it was awesome. I think it was the same judges for both hunter Eq classes.

I think the Maclay is more important right now because of the regionals - lots of focus on getting through. At Medal most people are just there for experience, and you’re qualified if you get all the points. Maclay has an extra step.

Hunter Holloway is another Zone 7 girl who is a great talent. By the way Zone 7 is in Region 5 for Maclay Regionals. Hayley Barnhill won both the Maclay and the USEF Medal and she also won Region 5 Maclay Regionals, she was not in Zone 7 however. Region 7 is the Pacific Northwest. Region 6 (Mountain) has the smallest number of entries in the Maclay Regionals with only nine in the class.

iequitate, point taken. I’m still waiting on email updates on what is going on back at home, missy…

Edited to add: Sorry to derail the thread, but I would welcome any/all e-mails from people letting me know what’s going on in the horse show world (or just having an e-mail buddy)!! I am pretty isolated down here! My e-mail is in my profile, I think.

That could be true now, in the old days when both were at MSG the qualifications were the same, three blues (in Region 2) in each class got you into the finals. Yet the Maclay was still more important.

Thank goodness they finally changed it to points instead of wins. I remember an awful tale of a rider in my area who accrued an incredible number of second place finishes without winning a class. 25? 30? Some crazy number like that.

Yikes, that must have been heartbreaking. The points system is definitely better.
