Suffered an injury in training and had surgery. They aren’t going into details (nor are they obliged to), but reading between the lines, it sounds quite serious. I’m hoping for the best for him and uneventful healing. I saw him at Oaklawn in April, and he was definitely the standout in the paddock that day, even though I didn’t wind up picking him as my Kentucky Derby horse.
I saw the news about Magnum Moon yesterday
I would agree it must be pretty bad. All that is being released is “structural injury” to one of colt’s front legs.
He had surgery at Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists which is across the street from the Belmont barn area.
Discouraging that the first article immediately said “career-ending”,
Updated article is encouraging that he came out of surgery “well”. No news to report.
“He came out of it well. No news is good news to report,” West said June 24. “But this isn’t an outpatient type of thing. It’s a long type of deal. The first hurdle has been jumped, but we’ve got a thousand more to go.”
Curiosity question. I fully respect the connections’ right to release whatever information they wish. Mostly curious why such a guarded release of information?
I don’t get it either, unless they are simply worried about a Barbaro response. I mean structural is nasty enough- condylar, sesamoid (s), whatever…but it seems a bit much to put the quash on any additional information- especially when they have a loooong time to go to see if he makes it.
Jingles for the boy. He super-impressed me!
My thought was they were maybe waiting on some kind of insurance claim & therefore possibly couldn’t say anything…
Although with the way some “fans” so all animal activist these days, they may simple not want to deal with the public drama.
They didn’t know the extent of the damage until they did surgery.
Or, conspiracy theories aside, the racing manager might not want to filter things through the press about his employer’s horse. Some owners just don’t see the need to share and unless the racing manager is explicitly authorized to give details, he doesn’t.
Thanks Pronzoni… that would make sense. I completely would support a racing manager not releasing any information or minimal information without the support of the owners. I wouldn’t have been expecting the weekly update such as Barbaro had but seems like most big name horse breakdowns share a bit more information about the nature of the injury.
PB, the extent of the injury was not released post surgery (other than the implications associated with a long road to recovery) to the best of my knowledge. Do you know otherwise?
Hopefully Magnum Moon will have a successful recovery and at some point an update will be released.
After reading what internet horseracing “fans” have to say, I would never release negative information about one of my horses. Why would I want to set myself up to be attacked? Could be that Magnum Moon’s owners feel the same way.
I can’t blame them at all for not wanting to get extended “feedback” from internet fans. Assuming that that’s why they aren’t saying much. I’m a Zenyatta fan, and some of the Facebook comments I’ve seen on her would make me, were I her owner, shut off the FB account permanently and keep the mare behind an impenetrable 50-foot wall. And that’s not as bad as some of the California Chrome stuff or Barbaro.
Not sure how you got anything to do with conspiracy theories from my post, but whatever
I never said anything of the sort LOL
I agree. Many “fans” are a bit rabid in their support.
Nope. My track vet usually says that no news is usually not good news in these situations. Even if they put him back together, recovery is dicey and laminitis a huge concern.
This guy crossed my mind today. Searched and searched and couldn’t find any updates. Sure hope Moon is okay…
Coincidence - I was thinking the same thing earlier today. I also hope he is healing.
I was just looking the other day, too. Couldn’t find a whisper of an update. They don’t have to give details, of course, but I hope he’s healing and not that it’s just that they don’t want to give out bad news.
ETA: I took this picture of Magnum Moon in Arkansas in April. I posted it on FB afterwards with the tag, “He is a looker!” A non horsey friend commented, “The horse or the man???” I had to confess that I hadn’t even noticed the man. He’s not bad, but the horse definitely gets my attention.

Still think of Moon a lot. He had captured my heart this spring and was my derby pick. I hope he’s still alive…
Jacob West retweeted a picture of him the other day… pretty sure no news is good news.
Yeah but remember this is COTH.
Here’s an update! He’s still recovering.
Glad for an update, but reading between the lines, it does sound like it was a very major injury. Best wishes to MM.
