Man O'War and the last color photo

A great read from photographer Barbara Livingston in the Daily Racing Form Oct 21, 2010 “Man o’ War - the final portrait”

From that link to the article you can see one of the exceptionally few color photos taken of him. Perhaps more fascinating the historical context of the image. The photo (and the rights to it) now belongs to Barbara who purchased it from the original photographer.

Wow. What I would give for that box of negatives…!

Wow…even at, what, age 30, look at the solid bone. Sure, he looks rough (days from dying, it’s not a surprise) but you can still see what a horse he must have been. What a find…I don’t remember if I’ve EVER seen a color photo of him before.

Wow, thanks for linking to that.

The ultimate Big Red.

Wonderful article and he is still to me the original big red.

Thank you for posting this link! As with so many others, Man O’ War is the only Big Red in my mind.

Wow! So humbling…what a horse!

When I bought Oliver and went back through his pedigree, I was so moved to discover that he had Man O’ War and War Admiral that I burst into tears. Suddendly my CW Anderson books had come to life.

Yes, thanks. Ted has Man O’War on his dam’s side, though he looks like the Breyer War Admiral.

Every picture of Man O’ War is amazing, he just had so much presence!

Tears a streaming, thank you. He always was my hero.

Are you sure you don’t mean the wonderful Walter Farley book on Man O’War ?

That is an amazing photo I am so glad that she shared it with the world.

Wow. Just wow.

Fabulous. He is definitely THE “Big Red” to me as well.

And yes, that Walter Farley book was excellent!

MOW seemingly had a bit of the ribs showing even when he was in peek racing form. Circa 1920 photo with Sam Riddle and Will H.

Some video footage of MOW here and

video of the match race with Sir Barton

Absolutely fabulous Glimmer.

The pics and video are so amazing. Thanks so much for hooking us up with them Glimmer!

I give thanks to Barbara Livingston for sharing the picture and story behind it being taken and how she came to own the photo. Her own pictures show a love and joy of so many runners.

The Farley book doesn’t have pictures (at least not the paperback). C. W. Anderson drew thoroughbreds like no one else. Like “Another Man o’ War”, one of my favorites.

Amazing stuff. I am misty. Thanks to Barbara Livingston for this gem.

Fascinating - thank you. My horse has MOW + Sea Biscuit twice (Sea Angel and Sea Garden) and no War Admiral.
