The problem that ML and her supporters are missing in their public communications is that these bleeding incidents aren’t something that ‘just happens’, by accident. That randomly occurs to horses generally. That can no more be anticipated and avoided than tripping over something you didn’t see. ML has to understand that, and none of her statements have owned it.

The bleeding happens because of ML’s actions. She has to own up to that and show a change - and not through more gadgetry. Basically, the bleeding has to stop. Cold and hard, right now. Whatever it takes for no more bleeding, without artificially suppressing it by gadgetry, that’s what she has to do. The other riders aren’t on horses bleeding from the mouth. ML can’t be on one, either.

Her excuses for the bitting and the blood are ridiculous and doing her no favors. The excuses are not favorably changing public perception - in fact, they are making it worse.

Is ML the only rider on a strong horse?
The only rider who sometimes struggles for speed control on cross-country?
The only rider whose horse would evade every dressage moment if they could?

No.

Is ML …
The only rider who has to have an excruciatingly tight noseband to get a good dressage score?
The only rider who can’t learn how to get a powerful horse around a 4* course without jerking and hauling?
The only rider who has to bit and crank and fight until the horse bleeds from the mouth?

That’s what ML hasn’t faced up to in her public statements. What kind of rider does she want to be, and how is she going to get there? The other riders are ALL in the same boat, re excited, strong horses. Their horses don’t bleed.

A few years ago, at one event, she used a softer bit on course. It didn’t go well and she ended up pulling up, she said due to safety difficulties with control. She made statements afterwards that she was done trying to go lighter on the mouth, she was going to go back to her old bitting.

Last weekend ML actually did ride so much better around the course that it was a pleasure to watch. If past sins caught up with her horse’s mouth to cause it to bleed anyway, or whatever happened, it is ML who must understand why there was blood.

And make personal changes to make certain, beyond all doubt, that bleeding never happens again. And not attempt to stop bleeding by gadgetry. That’s her only way forward from here.

Again, not a whit of apology to the horse for being harmed and drawing blood. Not even a speck of contrition or ownership that she might have caused it, nor any regret whatsoever towards the horse for harming her.

I can’t really disagree because I’m actually flummoxed that you shouldn’t be allowed to compete or really even want to compete a horse with a cut and bloody mouth is such a fringe position :lol:

Considering her previous bit with Kitty was a double twisted wire gag plus lever noseband with chain, the pelham she has on her looks soft by comparison. :lol:

@pieradill - you seem very earnest in your attempt to paint Marilyn Little as a caring/responsible horsewoman. Let me guess - you have always been an owner of an operation. You’ve never worked for a trainer (and your parents paying a trainer for you to “work” for that trainer does not apply) - really seen what goes on behind the scenes before the owners arrive (or after). .

She is a dressage trainer.

I am willing to believe that she has only seen the good, which is entirely possible. Though I still find it disheartening that a trainer in the sport apparently thinks it’s such a non-issue to have horses bite their cheeks or otherwise have bloody mouths during competition.

Something about this triggered me to remember Marilyn as being a team Athletux rider. I went to their web site and Facebook page but couldn’t find anything public facing to confirm or deny. But when I googled “athletux Marilyn little”, the following shows up in my Google results, but I don’t see it now on the Athletux FB page.

Then, if she is a dressage trainer, that she finds the fact that Marilyn Little has an organized and tidy barn with lists of what horses get what, etc - as evidence of good horsemanship - laugh-worthy. The lists and Type-A barn-thing are all fine and dandy but they are window dressing. A real horse person knows to look through all that fluff when it comes to whether or not the horses are really being cared for. It’s all FLUFF. It’s great - and essential to running a smooth and healthy operation, but in determining whether an operation is any good with regard to animal welfare, it means ZERO.

@alittlegray I saw that. The responses are insane. And the mention of anti-bullying is vomit inducing at best.

This past winter there were two beyond terrible rides at Del Mar Dressage at I-2. The first received a very generous 51% and the rider was eliminated after the end of the second ride for taking a hand off the reins to whip her horse.

There were 2 threads on the Dressage forum about them, one of them started to defend the trainer. And yep, there were accusations of bullying.
