I was out of town for a few days attending a canine event and so am very late to the “brushes with the famous” tangent.
But - I have met and had dinner with Debbie McDonald, Laura Graves, Stephen Clarke, Anne Gribbons, Arthur Kottas, Walter Zettle, Charlotte Bredahl, Gunter Seidel, Oded Shimoni, Cesar Parra, Lisa Wilcox, and Scott Hassler. My trainer(s) rode my horse in clinics with Debbie, Stephen, Anne, Arthur, Walter, Cesar, Scott, and Oded. I have also audited clinics with Betsy Steiner, Robert Dover, and Steffen Peters. There were all nice and personable but Stephen Clarke and Anne Gribbons were particularly fun and funny, esp. at dinner!
And I met Verdades up close and personal when Laura evacuated Florida ahead of a hurricane and stayed at the barn where I kept my horse. I’ve got a photo of me with Diddy somewhere…I will post it if I can find it. And my friend was riding my horse in the covered arena when Laura brought Diddy in to lunge. He was quite a firecracker!
More brags - my horse had at least six half-siblings at the London Olympics (same sire). Unfortunately, mine ended up with a poor owner and multiple health problems (including neuro issues resulting from EPM and a herniated disc), so his competition career was brief.
Oh I did meet Anne Gribbons at some point.
The WEG came through down the ride where I worked. Our barn was actually on the endurance route.
The French teammates following in a car stopped to ask “parlez-vous français?” I said no and they all laughed, rolled up the window, and drove away.
Met a bunch of big-wigs in the Hanoverian and dressage worlds one night but I mostly hung with the horses and couldn’t tell you their names.
I just died laughing because it took me a minute to realize Diddy is a horse, not Sean Combs. Can you tell dressage isn’t really my discipline?
Eavesdrop/eavesdropping, Mr. Deininger.
OK - Ill play since its before hours. I have ridden with many Team members and Medalists, even had MB up to my farm for a clinic 100 years ago.
But, recently, I had to blow the whistle on an Olympic Medalist for rising the trot in a Second Level test. They were a good sport about it lol. I wont name names.
Thank you for the latest filing @ekat. I enjoy reading Chris’ filings! They always seem so logical.
Is this topic part of what is being discussed in the hearing on Friday?
I know the hearing on Friday will cover Lauren Kanarek’s father (who is a lawyer), Jonathan Kanarek ( @Inigo-montoya) ignoring a subpoena asking him for his communications in the case that his daughter filed, which lead to a contempt filing against him.
It will also cover similar issues going on with Kirby Kanarek ( @Seeker1 ), Lauren Kanarek’s mother, wife of the above mentioned lawyer, who also ignored her subpoena so there is also a contempt filing against her. Her subpoena was asking for the transcripts that she and her daughter have boasted that Kirby made and sent everywhere and anywhere (by both Kirby and Lauren).
Bruce, Lauren’s lawyer did file to quash both subpoenas after the contempt filings, which was after the deadlines to respond to both of the subpoenas had passed.
I admit that since Bruce brought up how horrible it would be for all the world to see the shopping lists of the various parties if discovery is allowed, I am truly curious what they could possibly be shopping for that they put on a list on their phone. All I know is, if my shopping list got around there would be a huge number of people saying that I buy way too many vegetables and way too many cat treats.
They will also decide if Lauren has to travel to NJ, where Lauren filed the lawsuit, for her deposition. So strange that traveling to NJ is too scary on a covid front when she is willing to do so many other things that clearly are not too scary on the covid front.
It appears that Jonathan Kanarek and Kirby Kanarek do not have a lawyer yet. How will that work at this hearing? Bruce, Lauren’s lawyer, has filed some things on their behalf but made it clear that he does not represent them. Will Bruce be speaking on their behalf at this hearing or will they have to hire their own lawyer(s) for the hearing? Can lawyer Jonathan Kanarek speak for his wife even though he is not able to practice law in NJ?
In the course of Enron litigation, I saw people’s drugstore. com orders.
And those people didn’t proactively file a lawsuit.
Whatever might be seen in discovery = too bad, so sad. Should have considered that before filing.
I had heard about that incident from someone who knew both the previous owners in Germany and the new lessees/owners in the U.S. There was some doubt in their minds as to what truly happened because the horse’s colon appeared to have been cut from the inside in almost a perfect circle - as though someone had deliberately severed that part of the colon. They could never figure out why someone would need to do that to simply retrieve a packet of drugs from the rectum. Either way, it was a horrible, horrible end for a truly great horse. And IIRC, they never caught the scumbags on either end of the journey that were involved in the act. I hope they also died horrible deaths.
I believe it is one of the ones listed, yes.
I have no idea how this is going to work. Bruce, as of now, still doesn’t represent JK/IM or KK, so he should not be speaking on their behalf. JK cannot represent KK since it doesn’t appear he’s licensed in NJ. So, that is one thing I’m very interested in seeing, if there’s a chance we can watch on Friday.
So there is no fancy spousal rule that allows an attorney not licensed in a certain state to extend his representing himself thing to his wife?
(Hey, there are lots of creative rules out there, I figured it was worth asking.)
I think it’s always worth asking with what we’ve seen so far.
It wouldn’t surprise me if JK tries to do the talking for both of them, though that would be the unauthorized practice of law which is described as:
A person is presumed to be practicing law when engaging in any of the following conduct on behalf of another:
Giving advice or counsel to persons as to their legal rights or responsibilities or to those of others;
Selecting, drafting, or completing legal documents or agreements that affect the legal rights of a person;
Representing a person before an adjudicative body, including, but not limited to, preparing or filing documents or conducting discovery; or
Negotiating legal rights or responsibilities on behalf of a person.

Could he file a Motion for Pro hac vice?
He could have, but I don’t think he has enough time left before Friday’s hearings to do it now. Plus, by the time he pays the fees and an attorney to sign any docs, it might be more cost-efficient to just hire an attorney for Kirby.
Very good point. These delay tactics are costing Michael money. (Which, in my opinion, is intentional by team Kanarek.)
It wouldn’t surprise me either, especially after JK thought it was appropriate to contact the judge by email for both of them. I can’t see the judge entertaining that though.
Yes, I agree it’s intentional. As much as I enjoy reading the pleadings, my mind goes directly to how much that cost.
Now throw in oral arguments, and this is a very expensive week.
Hopefully the GFM gets some hits.
If JK was not a lawyer the world could assume he is just a clueless person who knows nothing about legal stuff. But I do not think it matters what kind of lawyer one was/is they know this type of stuff.
