I think Great Britain still does. And maybe Australia? Not in Canada anymore
I remember they wore them once on the TV show JAG but I don’t know what country they were supposed to be in.
Have you seen the cost of custom Santa Suits…
I have not priced those but I am willing to bet they are expensive.
And some are such gorgeous luxurious materials.
I keep trying to get my husband to do the Santa thing but as he isn’t a fan of small children he keeps saying no! The first year of COVID he missed his chance. I found an Orchard that was still offering Santa photos. They had Santa sitting in a snow globe with the kids standing outside. It would have been great for him!
I bet the kids liked the snow globe setting! As a kid we just had a shopping store Santa but downtown was decorated up for the holidays so I always enjoyed it.
It was a great idea even not in a pandemic. Think of all of those crying children being forced onto Santas lap!
I’ve got some friends who are KCs (King’s Counsel, used to be Queen’s Counsel before she passed) and quite high level judges in the UK, this site will give you an idea of what their robes/wigs etc. cost (hint, a lot). The KCs just had to order “weepers” for their sleeves when the Queen passed so that their tears could be brushed away - everything is based on hundreds of years of tradition, and a lot of it hasn’t changed.
I grew up in western MA, where you could go to Yankee Candle and walk through a Bavarian Forest (where it snowed every 4 minutes) to see Santa seated in his castle…even in July.
It was quite magical as a child. Less so now as the store has changed.
That was interesting. The wigs are still made from horsehair! Who knew?
I did not see the weepers listed, although I did not click on every link. What do those cost? And is there a designated length of time they must be worn? Six months? A year?
Have messaged chambers, will advise.
Okay, mourning weepers run at about £70 pair and are worn during the official Royal court mourning period, which runs from the death of the Monarch until 10 days after the funeral of said Monarch. They are only worn with full court robes though, not general robes. My KC friends are in their late 40s/early 50s though, so they’ll probably get another wear out of them due to the next Monarch passing within their time (grim thought, I know).
Australia, I love it they have maternity wear.
Great site!
Loved the cufflinks:
Sue on one, Settle the other
Trust Me, I’m a Lawyer (socks too!)
& Those we’re priced quite reasonably £
Did not find the Weepers
But those arrmbands looked ?metallic?
The mourning weepers are a special order thing, they haven’t been needed for 70 years (that’s how long QEII was on the throne), they are only worn on the death of a Monarch. Now they’re back in the boxes waiting for the next one.
Wow, it seems like a tricky thing to produce considering the supply/demand factor.
Legal tradition is a very powerful thing in the UK. In theory you’re meant to order your mourning weepers when you are called to serve, but the whole KC outfit (including the stockings and big buckle shoes) is so madly expensive that many don’t - then it’s a rush to get them when needed. I think that if you don’t appear in court during the mourning period, you don’t need them, it’s only a court thing.
Speaking of mourning and weeping - I do not understand what is taking the courts so long to file answers to the oral arguments from the other day. Darn. They are slow.
