While Jimmy Williams is dead, it appears that Several very influential people in the horse world are still alive, still influential in the horse world, and knew exactly what was going on at Flintridge riding club. As X members of FRC’s board, they were influential and funded the annual award given in Jimmy’s name by USET/USEF. Other members of FRC were certainly complicit. With Certainty FRC today is not exonerated from any Responsibility in aiding and abetting Jimmy.

I know at least one rando trainer with other legal issues has been named on COTH previously, those parts were mod-ed out as there are no legal proceedings against him for his sexual improprieties, and I’m sure it is not in the chronicle’s legal interest to leave those things up unfortunately.

I AGREE. Let’s stop tip toeing around this! It’s just letting him get away with it. I know I sure changed my opinion of him realllllly quick. As someone with an active social media presence this needs to be stopped.

From a legal standpoint I have a hard time condemning someone once they are dead and cannot defend themselves. It’s a basic is life that we should all be entitled to. There is no doubt that there is sexual harassment , sexual abuse that has run amuck in the show industry.
I realize tensions are high and this is a “jump on” subject. There are plenty of still "alive predators " around in our industry. Some of which may be making some accusations.
Our world today just takes people at face value. I’m totally shocked today at some allegations made. I will dI believe Susie Hutchinson 100 percent in what says.
There is way more here than is just what is in this article. It’s easy to say whatever about someone when they are deceased . The stories might be true but not enough detective work done here… allegations against dead people east. Allegations against people alive…, hehmmmm no problem. I’m uncomfortable with Jimmy Williams, taking away the trophy in his name,he can’t can’t defend himself. Sorry. That makes me uncomfortable.

I guess my real problem with all this is there are so many “real abusers” still out there. Doing what they do. What does frying Jimmie Williams do for anyone?? Just asking. It’s easy to to say whatever when someone is dead but there are people making accusations against him that are known for same or worse.

Im defending No one. I’m defending the right to be able to present a defense for yourself. JW is being made an example of. People , if he did this I’m all for it being brought out. But he is dead. There are plenty of living pedophiles, sadistic sexual offender perverts amongst us. Throwing Jimmy W to the proverbial wolves fixes nothing. I read it all. All of it. Abuse goes both ways. Women can be abused by other women or pressure just as easily. . Things happened years and years ago. I’m always so surprised by people who play the victim. Sometimes they are. Sometimes they are not.
Never, ever would I wait till someone is dead before ., woe is me… I’m a victim. Y’all go on, Pretty sure out Chronicle is now [liberal] to the max owned. At least one of the major victims??? It is never easy to admit to being abused. It’s why so many women never tell a soul. It took me 10 years to even mention my abuse to someone. There are still only a handful of people that know who the perpetrator is. It makes me feel ashamed, and yet I did nothing wrong.
I can’t imagine the fall out from confronting my abuser. I have no desire to open that particular can of worms. If he was gone, that can would be easier to open.

You mean hearsay, right? 'Cause it’s not really heresy. There was obviously enough evidence that the powers that be decided to make something happen. Even COTH allowed both sides to say their piece, if you consider Susie and Alan Balch’s stories as Jimmy’s side.

Susie had a different relationship with him, like, you know, voluntary. Might have influenced her ability to connect the dots as one usually does defend a long time lover they were with since they were a teenager. She adored him and was no neutral observer.
BC was just stripped on an honorary degree due to alumni donor and public pressure at Ohio State. He’s not dead yet or even convicted. Just ended up with an unsavory reputation that reflects poorly on the school. Think you will see more of that kind of thing. Too bad, he was as funny as JW was good with a horse. But can’t expect celebrity or skill at a trade to surpass basic morals in determining who to bestow humanitarian honors upon.

I did not know him. I’m a constitutional law kinda gal. NO one filed criminal charges, no charges that I know of. I’m defending HIS right to his reputation , guilty or not, until proven guilty. It’s a lot easier to crucify someone when they are sick or dead than pick on all the true perverts still out there , doing their thing, people know, puhleeeze dear God don’t make it seem like JW was allegedly the only offender. I only want for him want any of you would want. A right to defend yourself.

“Why wait until your abuser is dead?” is a train of logic I will never understand. As someone above mentioned: coming forward as a victim of abuse (of any kind) is so tremendously challenging. Right now I believe we’re seeing more and more of it occur because there’s very clearly a community of support around victims: for the first time in social memory there’s a sense that people can come forward with their allegations (and they may implicate powerful, popular, or successful individuals) and they still can be believed. Historically, this is certainly not the case, and not a typical atmosphere that confronts victims of abuse when they come forward.
If victims of predators who have since passed away come forward and can pave a way for younger victims, or victims in ongoing abuse situations, to have an easier time reporting their situations (either actually reporting to the authorities, or soliciting help from a mentor, peer, or other person of power) then I am all for it.
I don’t think it’s a leap to suggest that the above might be a logical sequence of events.
“Equestrian icon, untouchable no matter what they do” - except now it’s not so much an untouchable icon as it is that the equestrian community is having to confront the very uncomfortable truth that (some people knew and said nothing, some people didn’t believe it, some people didn’t want to see it and only in hindsight now can identify what they witnessed, etc). If there’s someone in a situation right now with a professional (or icon of any equestrian sport) I sincerely hope that seeing how the Jimmy Williams story is playing out gives them the courage to come forward. Right now, more than ever, there’s a sense that we(general) are willing to actually listen to claims of assault instead of just sweeping it under the rug as an “industry norm.”

Until recently, there was nobody to come forward and tell. I told somebody circa 1972 when my trainer groped and tried to kiss me in the tackroom…they laughed and said I was of age and attractive so should take it as a compliment. Can’t imagine what that would have been like at 14 or 15 in those years at Flintridge where causing a ruckus could get your family kicked out of the oh so exclusive CC.

Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Whether you agree or disagree it surely is not OK to suddenly come out with Sexual Abuse charges against a dead person when you had 30 plus years where charges could have been filed.
Msybe the rest of Facebook wants to crucify me for speaking out but hey. It’s not right, I don’t know what Jimmy Williams did or didn’t do but by your actions of waiting till he was dead… well… I’m judging my but what I see and feel to be true.
