I think the Tim Horton’s thing must be more about familiarity with a brand combined with “this is the Canadian thing to do”, because I too am surprised every time I drive by one of them and see a long line in the drive-through. The drinks taste like cardboard, the doughnuts are nothing special, sandwiches are often missing ingredients, and almost always very slow service.
This.^ If it comes from you, then it’s “nagging.” Men!
Tim Hortons is sadly nothing like what it used to be. The founder sold it to an American fast food chain a couple of decades ago and since then they have gone downhill.
When Inwas a kid, each Tim Hortons store was an actually bakery, making all the donuts, pastries, tea buns, etc. in house, which meant by mid-afternoon they would run out of favourites. It smelled like heaven. The coffee was hot and fresh, and that was good enough. Back then they sold coffee, tea, hot chocolate, donuts, and a few pastries and cakes. That’s it. Literally a coffee shop.
The new corporate owners launched the ironically-named “always fresh” program, requiring franchisees to buy pre-baked , flash frozen products that were then reheated “fresh” in the stores. Then they started playing around with their coffee recipe, and adding higher end lattes, mochas, etc. They aren’t made with an actual espresso machine, and are terrible.
Then, like many chains, they decided to expand their menu. At first they added a selection of soups and salad, which were pretty good, but gradually started focusing more on the meal items and less on the coffee and baked goods, until today they are almost an afterthought. Honestly you can get better coffee and donuts now at 7/11. But Canadians are loyal and still love their Timmies.
I nagged my husband to try a heating pad on his sore shoulder (recommended by his doctor along with meds) and he’s been raving about it…but what do I know?
I call BS. If people actually don’t know how many calories are in their dessert-in-a-cup, or think a drink full of sugar, chocolate and whipped cream is healthy, it’s because they CHOOSE to think that way. That’s not the restaurant’s fault.
We have a Duck Donuts near us and I finally visited the other day. TBH I was really disappointed to find it was just one donut type and a bunch of topping options. All the toppings just tasted like sugar and were not really distinguishable from each other, aside from maple bacon. To be fair, I am a yeast donut person, not a cake donut person. I wouldn’t have bothered going if I’d known it was all cake donuts.
When I was in the US South, I went to KK several times. My take: I did not like them hot b/c the taste of the fat/oil was the most prominent taste when warm.
I liked fresh but cooled. My favourite was the raspberry jam one. I loved it at home with a scalding hot cup of milky tea.
I also don’t drink coffee so cannot weigh in there.
Now when in the US, the kids love DD. No KK near where we stay. I do think the DD breakfast sandwiches are quite handy when rushing the kids somewhere early AM. They have only tried the DD glazed donut which seems to be a hit.
I wish I liked coffee b/c there are so many places to get it. Getting a decent cup of black tea out anywhere is practically impossible. And that’s no shade on the US. I’ve had some of my worst to go cups of tea while working in central London. I just bring my own now or suffer w/o caffeine.
A fresh, plain fried cake and a cup of good coffee: heaven.
My Spicy PRE, of my alter, has a sweet tooth and becomes unmanageable around apple fritters. As for me, I am not a fan of KK, and if my boy and I deserve a sweet treat, I will seek out a locally owned donut shop.
We have a wonderful locally owned donut shop. It is very close to where I worked, so before I retired I would stop before work now and then to wait in what could be a pretty long line, and get my fresh, light, plain fried cake. The shop was usually sold out by 8:30 AM. Now that I’m retired, I’m too lazy to get in the car that early and go for a donut.
I want donuts now.
At my house we call doughnuts dog nuts.
We have a similar store here called Insomnia cookies. Late night cookie pick up or delivery. Oddly they’re all on college campuses…
I started with a heating pad and now I have a heated blanket and I’m sleeping like a baby. Insomnia gone.
We have Crumbl and Insomnia cookies here. And some Mariah Carey cookie place? I don’t know how that arrived or where it came from.
I have bad insomnia. I turned on The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross and listen to him painting happy little trees. Sometimes that puts me to sleep.
I didn’t realize that he was a master sergeant in the Air Force and he said he had to yell at people. I can’t imagine him yelling.
I totally see the quiet Bob Ross as the needed antibiotic for the Master Sargeant Bob Ross.
For my fellow insomniacs, try the Sleep With Me podcast. It is bat guano crazy how well it works for me.

Then why are you not asleep?
I just woke up from heated bliss to let a whiny dog out
This is so awesome to sleep like this!
