Does anyone check out “rate my horse pro”? I’d take advantage a legit way to share my recent experience with someone that doesn’t seem gossipy like a BB can appear to be. It is $5 to sign up, which is fine, but I don’t want to waste my efforts if no one reads it.
I recently joined and used ratemyhorsepro.com when I was looking for a HB trainer for my yearling. I paid the $5 (which is returned to you if you make 5 ratings in a limited time period) and while I was on there, looked up H/J trainers I knew in my area. Most trainers are either not listed or don’t have any feedback but I was surprised to find a negative review of a trainer I’d worked with in the past.

It seems like it could be a useful tool, but apparently is being underused. One possibility for breeders and their clients to address the issues brought up by OP would be to create a listings for themselves (if professional) and rate others they have had dealings with. Then, on their websites, in signature phrases and other promo, say “Listed on ratemyhorsepro.com”. It could be a little like when you check seller’s feedback on Amazon or Ebay.

I don’t think this is a perfect solution, but it could be one way to go, when someone knows a breeder is bad news and doesn’t want to post here or other places for concern about legal or personal fallout.

BTW I have absolutely nothing to do with that site and have no idea who does.

or maybe there could be a thread here (or elsewhere) where folks rate interactions with each other? I see this done on other boards and it seems to work.

i think the horse world as a whole, needs to step up to the plate and start taking care of its own. There are SO MANY people that get away with stuff - and it happens because there is this implied secrecy -

i say that sunshine is what is needed. and how can someone argue with

“x did not comply with the terms of our agreement, so i will not do business with X again”

“x did fulfill the terms of our agreement and i WILL do business with them again”

etc

RMHP has been discussed extensively in other forums on here. If you don’t usually read outside of the breeding forum, you may want to do a general search. Feedback on the threads tends to be pretty balanced for/against, but at the very least it will help you understand some of the reasons it is being underutilized.

There are some wonderful acts of kindness going on with the other thread which shows how many good horse people there actually are. It’s so sad that a few bad apples has to ruin the bunch.

There is an element of implied secrecy, isn’t there? And I wonder what motivates these people? They take their horses to shows and inspections which would imply that they care what other people think about them. Are they just that confident that nobody knows what they are up to? Because most people do have good manners and try not to gossip. What if they thought that people were standing around talking about their dishonest ways rather than admiring their horses?

Anybody else having advertisements covering their PM’s with no X to delete them? Not trying to ignore anybody, thanks!
In case you haven’t already figured it out, change your compatibility view settings. I had to change mine AGAIN today. This is the 3rd time since the format change. I don’t understand why it keeps happening when I’m not changing my settings

Thank you!!!

I does seem that that is is rare for anyone to take a stand in the horse industry. It is not politically correct and more often than not you are the one labeled the troublemaker. But facts are facts…if this new asshat were to have judgments against them that are public record, than the details of the issue are not gossip, it is a fact. And Rate my Horse Pro has their Equine Court section that will post links and report on such events.

LOL, haven’t heard this new descriptive term for these people before this thread!

After lots of pm’s and private discussions among other breeders, the consensus seems to be that even though a lot of us don’t want any drama (lawsuits, etc.), we are not willing to “protect” the deadbeats any more by keeping quiet regarding this type of behavior amongst ourselves. So if you tell somebody the check is in the mail, be a decent person and put it in the mail! If you can’t manage this, surely the shows and inspections won’t be as much fun if the other breeders are not admiring your horses, but discussing how to protect themselves from being the next victim!

When I posted my long thread about my experience with Jill Burnell, I did it after much consideration and after trying desperately to sort it out myself. With no success, in the end I decided to simply tell my story on here and deal with any aftermath that might occur. I must admit I fully expected to be blasted out of CoTH but at that point I really didn’t care. My only reason for posting was to try to encourage Jill to send the breeding certificates for my foals so that I could register them.

It was some time ago now so I don’t remember exactly how the thread went but I do remember that I did not give the name of the stallion owner. Jill eventually posted on my thread and gave her side of the story thus she outed herself. The thread went on for some time and eventually I did get the breeding certificates from her. I don’t recall any posters being horrible to me or lambasting me but what did come about as a result of that thread was a LOT of PMs where people told me their own personal stories about their dealings with Jill; all of their stories were far worse than just my little moan about not getting my breeding certificates. I actually started to feel pretty awful that I was whinging about such a trivial issue compared to some of the terribly harrowing stories I heard privately.

Anyway the point is, I kept my postings as factual as possible from my perspective and I was pleasantly surprised at the level of support I was given, both on on the thread but also some very kind gestures were made to me via PMs.

Actually I think I accidentally outed her first. That was back when she sort of cared what people thought and caved to the peer pressure to do the right thing. Now things are so messed up I don’t think she could make things right if she wanted to. She could certainly give it a shot however but don’t hold your breath.

If someone specifically asked me if I’d recommend this breeder, I would say no.
I believe I know the situation you’re talking about (I know of two “locally”) and I hear you too. I think this is the best “neutral course of action” available (unless and until the unhappy folks are willing to provide evidence), although it’s nice to be able to warn farriers, dentists, vets, jump builders, etc that they may not get paid…

I didn’t realize my PM box was full. I have cleaned it out.

I hear you, can’t re.
I have a pretty good idea who can’t re is talking about too…
So let’s say you have asked this breeder repeatedly to be paid, and she always sweetly gives you a very sad excuse? Which were actually believable for a while until […]
Stop asking nicely. This is a business transaction. Would your mortgage company call and ask nicely if you didn’t send your check?

Send her an invoice, then a reminder, then a past due notice. All nice and professional. Then go do what’s necessary to get a judgement against her. Hopefully it’s just small claims court and some paperwork.

At that point, there’s a nice public paper trail for other people to follow.
So wait, are we still talking about JB or is there another asshat out there doing similar things?
Nuther asshat. There is a thread about her now. But the OP of that thread is reluctant to “out” her.

That OP has given this breeder months to send a simple letter to the GOV, but said breeder will not do it nor return phone/emails.

IMO, THIS is when such a person needs to be outed. If this breeder is a problem for one foal owner, chances are she is a problem for others. But, as someone said about JB’s victims – in the beginning they each thought they were the only one.

If said [new asshat] breeder does the right thing (send a letter to the GOV) then all is settled. How hard can that be? Unless said breeder is so in over her head that she doesn’t know which way is up. In that case, other mare owners and foal buyers need to know.
Small claims court can be our friend…although it can consume a lot of effort to get your money. However, if you have a judgement (even if you have not gotten your money) at least you have likely suit-proofed yourself against threats of legal action (bullying) when you are stating facts about someone-as those facts are part of a public legal record.
Au Contraire. Small Claims court does not consume a lot of effort when compared to the benefits of getting a judgment.

Seriously, you fill out a form, send it in with proof of your allegations (service performed, cc’s of bills and requests for payment and any writings you have from the other person making various excuses.) (Paying a filing fee – which should not be excessive in small claims court) Then you pay to have the defendant served ($25).

You show up on the date set for the hearing, with all your paperwork. You tell the Judge your side of the story. Defendant (if she bothers to come) tells her side, and the Judge rules, based on the arguments and evidence. It is usually over in 30 minutes.

From preparing the complaint to walking out of court with a judgment should take less than 4 hours of your time (excluding drive time to the court.) and cost you less than $200.

I still remember and shudder at reading this thread. I wonder if the OP is a member here. Since they decided to lock it, I don’t know how it turned out, but someone called Jill, got the oher side of the story, and decided to believe her.

I don’t want to make people paranoid, but I think that we are talking about multiple ***hats here. And that’s really the sad thing. I WANT to be able to buy a horse sight unseen that I fall in love with off of a video, I WANT people to to feel like they could buy ours the same way. I want to be able to let somebody pay a horse out that they fall in love with and be happy to do it. These few bad apples are spoiling everything for the rest of us. The big question is how red do we let the red flags get before we have to get involved in a lot of drama?
