Modern Pentathalon

Whoa!

New statement from the UIPM concerning an action plan in the wake of Tokyo. Looks like they will partner with the FEI to an extent, lower jumps, and focus on training for officials, so that they can be more effective in the future in terms of identifying and stopping shit shows in competition. There is also a mention of reviewing what happened at Tokyo in case additional sanctions should be handed out.

Oh… and there is ANOTHER update on Saint Boy.

On the video posted two posts above - The first ridden horse appears around the 34 minute mark, if that is all you want to watch. They do show parts of the other competition (fencing and swimming).

I would like @JER s thoughts on this!

Agreed. Looks like their plans are in line with some comprehensive reforms she called for on her longer Insta posts. I’m also curious as to what the has to say about the certification of coaches that they bring up.

They specifically mentioned that they want input from the national federations as well. Again… that’s interesting and dovetails with JERs earlier comments that many of the national federations had wanted specific reforms in the past, but had their proposals fall on deaf ears with the world organization. It seems like the president of UIPM is finally waking up. That’s a good thing.

Wow - this sounds really promising if they actually follow through.

As for the Saint Boy update… they link to pictures and video of a horse that DOES look like him. Who knows when it was taken… but does look relatively current. The video just shows the horse flatting.

That’s a much more positive development and it’s in line with a lot of what was suggested here. Fingers crossed that they’ll follow through…

The article says they were taken yesterday.

I didn’t write bad, I wrote “not great”.
As usual you move the ball…

How do I know?
Because I have eyes, and 40+ years of education in the art/sport of riding.

Ahhh! Good catch

My thoughts are up on my Instagram @jersporthorse. And I posted some stories with further thoughts.

I’m at fencing camp all day so will answer questions tonight when I’m resting my legs…

The comments in response to their updated Facebook post are also interesting. At first glance, it looks like most of the horse people following this who were outraged are pleased with this response and action plan. But the crazy animal rights people, and the extreme horse rescue type people still are pushing to have the equestrian element of Modern Pentathlon eliminated entirely, and are still dissatisfied with the update on Saint Boy. I suppose that was predictable.

Personally, if the sport can be salvaged, and the equestrian element at the next Olympics goes well… it actually might be able to turn into a positive redemption story. Just my initial thoughts.

No, I’m a horse person and I don’t agree with all of NYC’s suggestions. Particularly, the suggestion of “switching the shooting out from running and make it mounted shooting instead” (which is the point of the post I believe JER was responding to…). This comment is pretty cavalier and I believe that JER is correct in assuming that folks in any discipline wouldn’t take kindly to someone from another discipline commenting in like fashion about changes they think are a good idea…just cause.

It’s like a HJ rider commenting to a barrel racer that they think barrel racing would be better if they didn’t have to use ACTUAL barrels…

And the “It would serve you to tuck your tail, at least a little bit” comment is fairly outrageous in my opinion. JER has been consistently commenting AND agreeing on the many of changes that can/should be made to MP. Just how much self-flagellation is required? Holy cow.

Wait! What do they use? They are not barrels?

Yes, they use barrels. lol.

Well I would defend any rider of any nationality because this thread goes exactly as a lot of other threads :disappointed:. Somebody who cannot even defend herself gets classified as whatever…(depending on the situation). It’s easy to do this from a safe position behind a computer :blush:… I know. None of you knows her personally or knows how much time she spends riding and what is interesting for me is that many of you admit that you would never jump that high…. I simply don’t think that a German entering this type of competition will do do without riding experience…. And I firmly believe that this Russian rider did fry the horse did you all notice how hard she used her Spurs??? So for me this thread goes typical for COTH let it be LK or the Maestro or against Republican poster on this board….It’s obviously fun to team up and then attack as a group

Well… @JER does actually know a fair amount about Annika, and how much she rides, etc.

As for passing judgement on someone else’s ride… isn’t that the fundamental nature of equestrian competition? You are deeply committed to dressage, if memory serves me well… does a dressage judge need to know you personally, or know your training schedule in order to evaluate your ride? No. No they don’t. They evaluate the ride you have in the arena , while doing a particular test, in comparison to the accepted standard for what is expected at a particular level.

Your comment about having a hard time believing a German entering a competition at this level would attempt to do it without the required riding experience… well… I can understand that. I find it surprising as well, given that Germany has a love of many equestrian disciplines in general, and there is no shortage of excellent coaching available in the country.

I do think the Russian rider fried the horse. Agreed. But the way Annika rode the horse next? With that hold on his face in a bit as unforgiving as a gag, combined with her seat? C’mon. You ride DRESSAGE. That must have appalled you in terms of how it was a brutal application of aids.

As for posters on this board piling on certain targets… yup… it happens. I’ve been on the receiving end of one or two, once the dreaded ‘p’ word sneaks it’s way into the discussion, because I shockingly don’t vote the same way as many others who post here a lot. Oh well. I still post here and participate in discussions, even after getting fried once or twice on different threads, because I actually appreciate it when I see eye to eye with others on something I feel strongly about… especially others who are not part of my usual ‘tribe.’ That pretty much sums up every single thread I’ve participated in with respect to SafeSport. I feel strongly about that topic, do not align with many folks from my regular tribe on that topic, and I value participation on these forums with other like minded folks who care about that issue.

Sometimes it’s healthy to look at sports and life issue by issue, and step away from one’s usual ‘tribe’ and really listen to what others are saying…

She is either trolling or [edit], not paying attention is the best response. Two of the best German equestrians - Klimke and Werth commented publicly, presumably after seeing this disgraceful “performance” of the fellow German.
See abuse, speak up - it’s that simple!

I think the eventing comparison seems like a far stretch–i.e., that people are focusing on this ride at the expense of eventing’s safety issues. No one (I hope) is suggesting that eventing doesn’t have a great deal of work to do in that regard.

But I think this ride touched such a nerve with so many people is that we’ve all seen riders who, with a thirst for competition, have jumped too high or taken on horses that were just too much horse for them, and tried to take shortcuts, using the excuse of time or “the horse is bad” or whatever. When the issue was that they really needed to work on their riding, jump lower (or just flat), and be humble about the fact they weren’t doing the grunt work and wanted the ribbon.

Really Klimke and Werth explicitly said that Annika Schleu is a horrible rider?? Really?? I would like to see a link!!
