Modern Pentathlon will no longer have an equestrian phase

Good . It will be easier to have a fair test with cycling.

Well that was a big old DUH. I mean unless they could bring their own horses but hey let’s not make any sense here, right?

And yes, I think bicycles would be much more fair.

Wow, that changes the sport so completely. It’s now Triathlon++. I wonder how the former athletes will feel about the competition now.

I know a young, very competitive triathlete who is a college senior in Army ROTC, so certainly has some shooting in his bag of tricks already. I hope he sees this and decides to find a fencing coach ASAP. In fact, I might make him aware of it; he may become a future Olympian.

just have to Vet the bicycle to make sure there are not any hidden motors powering the thing… and clarify just what a cycle is to be not assume everyone is talking about a bicycle

Olympic cycling already has specifications with regard to the allowable equipment.

Other sources are saying that cycling may replace riding in MP; not that it definitely will. And no details about what type of cycling it will be, if chosen. I think they would probably choose a road time trial, if it is done. Each cyclist competes against the clock, not against each other, on a road not a track.

Make it more interesting: roller skating, with jumps. Skates are my absolute bĂŞte noire.

Cycling makes so much more sense!

ok… what kind of cycling… oval track or wilderness ?.. Wilderness would be sort of related to the replacing the Equine

Good. In this day and age, as it was working out, it was a stupid idea.

Thank heavens!

Good… they can beat the bike and not hurt anyone other than themselves.

Finally someone makes a wise decision.

Good call.

It made sense back when riding was a basic sporting activity for people.

Change is good.

I actually am disappointed.
The idea behind the pentathlon is to test all the skills a soldier would need. Bike riding isn’t exactly a skill you need for the military.

I feel it would have been better to lower the jump height (maybe a meter, or even .90) and be stricter on disqualification. Two refusals, or a fall, and you are out of the whole thing.
The problem with the way the modern pentathlon was set up was that there was no real penalty for poor riding.

I have a acquaintance who does modern pentathlon. She has always said the biggest problem with the sport is that it’s a shooting competition with some roadblocks along the way.

If the absolutely needed to remove riding (and I can see why they would feel that way) I think something like rock climbing or rowing would have been a better fit. Rowing has actually been proposed before.

Plot twist: Eventing develops a “side sport”. After the SJ phase, riders have to run a 5k marathon with en-route target shooting. Riders run in order of placing, with timing between runners depending on penalties, missing a target means a “wait” on course. Final placing is who crosses the finish line first.

Four-day eventing. Participants must qualify through normal channels.

That’s one way of bringing back endurance

This will be disappointing for the Pony Club tetrathletes in the modern pentathlon pipeline, but otherwise sounds like a good move.

Not necessarily. It sounds like the equestrian phase is only being omitted in the Olympics venue.
