Modern Pentathlon

Do you think that the women will be better? Less of a tendency to be swaggering macho types?

These days, a military officer needs to be able to golf. Add golf.

Do you think that the women will be better? Less of a tendency to be swaggering macho types? Maybe they have actually put in the time.

I’ve just been thinking the same thing. I used to run cross country to national level, swam competitively (distance swimming rather than sprints), still ride (happily jumping 1.20 m courses) and have fenced (although not a lot - 2 -3 years training). I can shoot, but I’m not a great shot - I always blamed it on being left eyed and shooting right handed.

It might be worth picking some of this again - even if it was for Masters (and old Masters at that!) It all sounds like my kind of fun.

A long time ago when I was a junior I worked as an instructor to pay off boarding for my horse. I was competing the jumpers at national level (and doing some XC just for fun). My brother was playing soccer at the same level (actually got an offer to play with full scolarship for some university in Florida can´t remember which). Anyway, he and his friends got this fabulous idea to do the pentathlon after seeing the shananigans at that years olympics. They decided to start with the riding part… Signed up for 10 lessons. They were actually quite good, you know young guys who think they know it all and has absolutely no fear, in good shape and nice balance. The fourth lesson I let them canter. I have never laughed that much before or after. I chose the horses with the slowest and easiest canter there was, still my brother yelled passing me at snailpace “she´s goooooing tooooo fast, catch her!!!”. They finished the ten lessons but vowed never to get on a horse again ( TOO SCARY!!), and I never got any remarks after that other than “really good going sis” after riding a jumpoff or doing the XC.

There was a vote here which sports to exclude and which to include in the next Olympics. This is one of the excludes…

Show jumpimg speeds are
BN 300 mpm
N 320 mpm
T 325mpm
P 350 mpm
I 350 mpm
A 375 mpm

So yes, 350 mpm IS Prelim show jumping speed.

I have been told that, once upon a time, Jimmy Wofford was one of the riding coaches for the US pentathalon team (when it was still, at least partially, active military)

First heat of the women’s swimming has just started, FYI.

After reading most of the posts I couldn’t help but think that at most of the jumper shows I’ve been to…at the lower levels, I’ve seen some pretty scary riding that compares to this. Why is no one complaining about the cruelty to those horses?

So do the athletes do all these events back to back to back to back to back? Or do they have some breathing room in between events?

They have travel/warmup time between swimming(Aquatic centre)/fencing (Copper Box)/riding+combined running and shooting (Greenwich Park).

Ugh, I’m not hopeful - the French pentathlete currently in third overall was noted by the BBC’s Aussie swimming commentator as coming from primarily a swimming background, and that she’s had to overcome a “fear of horses” in her transition to MP in the last 3 years. Yowza.

I think the American Margot/Margeaux is in 6th after fencing and swimming so here’s hoping she has a good ride.

Well the American did much better than the gals from Japan. Do the horse handlers get to give any hints to the riders? The riders are really hanging on to their heads.

The black horse with chrome is actually a brown mare, 16.1H, Belgium WB.

Thanks, she was super. (Although they were all lovely and generous. I would take any of them.)

Nice horses but the girls are having more trouble with them in general. I notice they don’t pat their horse afterwards as much as them men did. Noticed that Trinidad is an alternate horse. Wonder if we’ll get to see him again.

Just watched the second Japanese girl. Coach does NOT look pleased.

OMG the Pole had her reins tied in a knot.

NICE honest kind bay mare (I think) on course now with a big wite face with a Ukrainian. BBC: “Horse has a great attitude.”

Donna Vikalis of CAN with a refusal at the first fence. And now she’s off at the combination.

BBC announcer is noting in her bio that she states she rides 2x a month but spends time on a daily basis on the other disciplines and has just said he sees no point to that, says a shame to wreck it all by not practicing one’s riding.

“These riders if they’re going to win medals need more training. They look very professional in the fencing arena but not professional on a horse.”

Suzanne’s (USA) round was pretty good – she made some good corrections, I think the horse was just strong and got flat. Her position was very solid, although I shouldn’t be surprised since she has a strong riding background.

Seems that all they know how to do is hang on to the reins and have no concept of using their legs and seat to help regulate the horse’s speed.

Holy Crap did you see the horse jump with the rider hanging under her neck! Lovely horse, all you have to do is stay on but that was asking to much I guess!

Mexican with multiple refusals and a scary assed fall over the triple.
