Criminal charges have been filed!!! 7 horses and 1 goat have been seized.

Not a lawyer so this might be a dumb question but why a supeoba and not a warrant for removing the animals?

Good question (but I’m not a lawyer either).

I don’t necessarily like the tone of this blog, but it is one of the best summaries if you can cut through the sarcasm.

I already posted that blog earlier in this Thread.

Are you out of your mind? Or do you just like to hear yourself talk? If you think Monica is misjudged, you’re as sick as she is. There’s nothing acceptable or understandable about what she did and your sneering here is very inappropriate.
Bingo
typical LR’s MO. and the more people reply to him, the more he will go on.

HAHAhahahahaha!!!

Oh man - I knew my finger was twitching to add someone to the “ignore” list. But then
oh then he said he had the TRUTH, the story we all missed! Oh what was this juicy knowledge? This poster seems to speak from their posterior most of the time - but wait, I must know the insider line!

What a let down - gees louise!

So, what’s the most logical explanation here. It’s been on the radar for at least 10 months (Wow, and it wasn’t COTH
OMG) with knowledge from authorities.

All of a sudden the complaint is Facebooked and authorities are suddenly inundated with complaints from constituents viewing pictures that tell 1,000 different words to 1,000 different people. It gets real ugly real fast. Like Hiroshima in slo-motion. Authorities succumb to pressure/perception 'cause they’re now the abusers.

That’s all.

You’ve got a highly successful, hard-driven Scandanavian woman, used and abused by the industry trying to stay afloat both mentally and financially while maintaining a dream of promoting the dying harness racing industry.

Then she made the mistake of using/misusing a hooving product. With trust lost in others, she goes about using all the vet/blacksmith knowledge she’s accumulated over the years. The timeframe, even with professionals, takes many, many months. Minute glimpses of progress fuels her. She doesn’t lose hope, until it’s taken
and probably, appropriately. It sent her over the edge.

No prior abuses, simply a misjudgement.

She’s very different in her ways. Those tend to be misjudged.

Misjudgement X misjudged = firestorm
especially in the equine arena.

Just ask Temple Grandin.
OH MY GOD So you are saying she meant well?
I do not even know what to say to this!

And, apparently, the NJ SPCA has opted to ignore the many (I have read 50) cats in her possession since they were not on the same property as the horses. This, despite scores of folks asking them “what about the cats?”, along with photos:

Excerpt from the link above:
"When asked about the cats allegedly being abused, Matt Stanton, NJ SPCA Spokesman said he was not aware of any cats on the property. “Our subpoena did not have cats on it.”
Those cats are in big trouble. Without the horses to work on, and with cat muzzles and willing hands to help hold them down (you can see both in her photos), this is a serious problem. I believe with the horses out of her reach she will simply switch over to the cats or whatever other animals she has. We need to keep this in the limelight. Cats are much easier to hide from the authorities, too.

Well said Anne FS.

It says a LOT about the NJSPCA intentionally leaving the animals at her house out of this. I say liar, liar pants on fire to the NJSPCA claiming they were not aware of the other animals at her house & what has been being done to them too.

I agree, Anne. Also, NJ SPCA was well aware of all those cats (I’ve read that Thors said she has 28; other comments have put the number around 50) and that they were not at the barn but at another location (Thors’ house?). The street address was posted several times. In a case like this, ALL locations where Thors is said/thought to have animals should have been checked. Also, this basic “slap on the wrist” measly two charges make no mention of her being prohibited from owning horses, or any other animal - plus it indicates to me that the NJ SPCA either doesn’t give a crap and/or they were not being truthful in how long and diligently they’ve been working on this situation (probably both).

Genuine question-- has anyone seen evidence of actual neglect or cruelty toward the cats? The horses and goat were clear cut cases to me–what she was doing put them in severe, constant pain and in grave health danger.

I have not seen anything that rises to that level for the cats. Cutting off whiskers and giving frequent baths is weird but not cruel in any legal sense.
Yes, she is trimming claws, but there’s no comparison whatsoever between horse hooves and a cat’s claw structure and purpose. Cats can do just fine with no claws.
That some cats needed a muzzle so they don’t bite is not evidence of cruelty–dog groomers use muzzles all the time. Lots of people have to twitch their horses for brief procedures (it’s pretty easy to imagine a FB campaign devoted to stopping the supposedly cruel and bizarre practice of twitching–ya gotta admit it looks pretty terrible if you don’t understand what it’s for). Pulling horses’ manes is a standard practice in the horse world, even though it’s purely for fashion and it appears many horses really don’t like the process. Owners brush off the horse dancing around as mere annoyance or impatience, when I believe it’s probably discomfort.

So, no, I’m not on board with the campaign extending to get all animals away from her, unless there is evidence of cruelty or neglect that meets legal standards. Stuff that’s weird and annoying, or grooming that is temporarily uncomfortable but not crippling or life-threatening, is not IMO grounds for the government to deprive someone of their property or liberty.

I feel very sorry for the cats, and I hope treatment or family pressure can stop her from doing that stuff.

How about we have no idea how short the cat claws are being trimmed. Don’t you think that too warrants investigation?

Exactly.

I think the argument would be something along the lines of “if one child shows signs of abuse, remove all children.”

I agree with you, HungarianHippo, that nothing we have seen about the cats is legally abusive - albeit really, really strange and probably not something the cats enjoy.

Even so, given that she has shown quite a bit of mental instability and poor judgement with care to animals - there is reason to be concerned.

The mouths on the cats look weird too. There’s been speculation that she’s been trimming their teeth.

Not sure if its true, not sure if there’s any pictures showing something of this
but all the cats have very oddly shaped mouths.

I’ve read somewhere that removing the whiskers affects a cat’s ability to balance itself and move in a straight line/jump, though I don’t know just how much it affects them or how accurate that is.

You’d think it would make sense to have a vet or two over to at least check on the cats either way.

I think there are efforts afoot to help the cats. I hate to say this, but all the animals are still at risk  As I understand it, the horses were seized as evidence. They haven’t been forfeited, so there’s no guarantee they won’t be returned to her. That’s why it’s so important to keep the eye on the ball and focus on what happens next. I’m praying like crazy that she’ll get psychiatric help and voluntarily give up all the animals.

Oh God, I cannot even think about it.
Makes me sick to my stomach.
I can only pray they are removed.

Alright, that worked.
This is off her facebook page from I think 2010. I did see a pic of a vet working on her horses the other day and I’m trying to find it again. CBS Philly will have an updated news piece this evening apparently. This has been going on for years and it’s all documented in pictures with names and explanations, etc. I hope they can legally get the cats out too and the dog.
