Just in time for more rain and mud.
I am optimistically hoping that it’s not going to do anymore than the light raining that it currently is. Although it’s supposed to do it for 4 more hours…
At least it’s only 82?
I’m always amazed that COTH’ers get their hands on pitiful cases with sad eyes, and in a few short weeks they are transforming into a quite a lovely, healthy-looking horse. With a sparkling eye.
At some point in the future, you have to look carefully at current photos to match them with the first ones, before the magic started to happen.
Bring us rain with no mud and forever decent temps. Amen
Ah, the Bowie Boys are looking great!
And as soon as you figure out how to get rain without the mud or sticky humidity in the summer, let me know. I’ll be waiting.
Well, my holiday houseguests are driving away down the driveway, and I’ll be back to the regularly scheduled programming this week
Everyone is doing fine, just muddy.
The mud is mostly dry (for now, for today).
Ernie is one of those horses that thinks that sharing is caring, even though he has his own tub with the exact same stuff in it not far away.
They are both looking ribby-er today, and I am reminded of the joys of trying to put weight on youngsters who are growing and probably haven’t had proper nutrition for a bit. It’s a balancing act.
Yet to me, their booties look better. So some of that good food and room to roam must be having a positive effect on their butts!
Agreed, they have filled out in other places which is nice to see. I’ll be thrilled when they are fat enough that I don’t have to squint at them daily to decide if they look more or less ribby than yesterday.
Prepare yourselves for a photo dump. Despite the return of the MUD, glorious mud, Ernie was feeling cute and friendly today. I picked up a fresh load of alfalfa this morning, got rained on while unloading the last of it and just slopped out to fill nets so I’ve changed my clothes now for a third time and hopefully the last until bedtime. Bert’s in here too, he just wasn’t feeling as charismatic as Ernie.
Ernie would like to say hello, aunties, I got my first nose kiss today:
Fresh rocket fuel delivery:
Ernie coming over to request that I remove the infernal alfalfa containment system
Settling for scratches instead:
Future grown up Ernie is going to be GORGEOUS.
Bert taking his job seriously:
Today is a very special day, Ernie 🥹
Sending Ernie a nose kiss right back! And one for Bert too when he’s ready
Oh my goodness. That picture of Ernie is lovely. A nose kiss from Ernie, oh my, how special you are.
Handsome boys.
They look so much better already! You really have a way with getting horses back in shape!
Omg! Nose kisses for Ernie! I’m so PROUD 🥹
They’re both going to be gorgeous I think. And that alfalfa looks delicious tbh. I’m jealous sometimes that humans don’t eat hay… not on purpose anyway. It smells so GOOD.
This tastes like hay smells (to me)
They are looking fantastic under your care, well done!!
They are just blossoming under your care! They are so beautiful, and you’re right, Ernie is going to be drop dead gorgeous. Not that Bert is any slouch either.
I may have snuck one last week.
Thank you! It’s all about hay and patience. More hay, more patience.
Every time I unload a new batch of alfalfa, I think to myself that someone needs to make a perfume with alfalfa as a key note because it smells absolutely delicious. And considering what it costs, $500/ton right now - it better!
They are looking much better outwardly, but the biggest change for me is really in their personalities and outlook. They’ve gone from not letting me within 30’ of them to actively trying to mug me every time I enter the paddock
If it makes you feel better, I recently got 1 ton of second cut mixed grass hay to tide me over until this year’s crop is available, and I paid $525/ton.
Ouch! My alfalfa has gone down in price the last year or so, thankfully - it shot way up to nearly $700/ton in 2023 due to fuel prices or some such. I also feed coastal, which is especially affordable when you can buy round bales so it balances out to make up for the $$$ alfalfa.
I popped out for lunch to play with the kids, unfortunately Peach had other ideas:
Bert thinking hard about why I’d make him stand over there, three whole feet away:
The hair from the rain rot? or whatever thing that caused random patches to fall off his face is finally growing back in (and such a pretty, dark color!). You can tell how bleached out he is!
Our sessions were a bit short and sweet because as you can see in the background, the rain is coming again and the thunder rumbles were getting closer. Both boys are doing well with handling their feet - I was able to pick up a hind leg without either one walking off today.
