Peach says, "But I’M the baby!!!’
He is definitely accustomed to being the center of attention
I still want a car freshener that is “English Saddle Leather”. My best friend is a saddle fitter and her Subaru smells delightful…
Just catching up… they look so good!! I see massive changes
They are SO different now in demeanor. They just march right up to me without hesitation, and even when I shoo them out of the way they don’t really move
Priority #1 right now is getting more comfortable with foot handling, because both boys are in need of trims and I don’t want them getting too overgrown. They are doing well with holding up the front feet calmly now - just need to get those back feet on board.
Such a good feeling to check things off of the list! Not being able to approach them brings out my obnoxious need to give them a hug😂
Little by little sounds and looks like you’ve done great things! Still team Bert but Ernie is slowly growing on me
Big Baby Bert always looks so pensive in pictures. Someday when he’s not looking like burnt toast and has had a proper bath, we will do some glamour shots with ears forward!
Today was a big day for Bert. His front feet got picked, rasped a bit and the nippers introduced to take off the shovel-points that were his toes. There’s still a fair amount of foot that needs to come off but this is where it pays to be your own trimmer; I can do a little here, a little there each day without overwhelming him mentally.
And Bert likes face rubs now. Go Bert!
Way to go, both of you!!
Super exciting day when you can
Trim a little. Yay Bert.
“Why does the lady want me to stand here like this and what’s the point of it all?”
My other horses have all learned to pose he will get it soon.
When the lady tells you to stay and goes over there and holds up the little rectangle, LOOK PRETTY!
I think you should call it “Resting Bert Face”…
Way to go, Bert!
Bert has that teenage boy - Mom, I haven’t fixed my hair, don’t take my picture yet. - look.
I’m here for it. He will get there and be a model in short order.
This made me laugh! nearly choked on my coffee
Watching these boys and K. Kooky’s boy really has me sold on the breed. I don’t personally want certain breeds but admire them regardless. I just didn’t have DH on my radar but I’m a fan now!
This is a pretty accurate comparison he LOOKS like a grouch a lot of the time, but he’s really a thinker and a trier and he’s just sensitive. It’s just the way his face looks.
I like them quite a lot! These boys seem to retain information well, and their underlying temperament is one that is curious but pretty steady. A good brain in a fancy package is always welcome in my barn
This morning was Ernie’s turn for the spotlight. I managed to catch a rare moment of Ernie not looking totally awkward or splayed out like a llama:
Make sure you get my good side:
Ernie got some nipping and rasping done on both front feet today. He’s A-OK with the nipper sounds and rasping, though his attention span leaves a bit to be desired. As one might expect given his frequently awkward posture, he’s not that skilled at standing on 3 legs. This might look “ugly” around the edges, but keep in mind that we are nowhere near being able to bring the foot forward to put it on a stand and make things look “pretty” just yet. I get about 30 seconds of work time before he needs to set the foot down and start over, so it’s quick and rough for now.
Simulated tying event - I suspect Ernie may have some concept of tying based on the way he reacted here. Here the rope is literally just draped over the top of the screw eye, I promise it’s not tied to anything or even looped around anywhere. I’m no dummy We’ll work on actual tying in a different location, but for now this keeps the rope out of the way.
Emotional Support Horse Peach is never far away (and often way too close), being either way too supportive or slightly bossy:
Now that we’re friends and I know I can get hair samples from both boys without traumatizing them, I really need to order the DNA test kits from ADHHA. I should go print the form out now so I don’t forget again!
We will be waiting.
they are looking so much better - even with the mud, you can tell they are filling in the correct way and I love Peach’s cameos!
I’ve always been incredibly fond of Bert. I think I mentioned before he reminds me of my Dutch colt by Bolivar that I bred and raised years ago. Here’s a photo of Bolivar. My colt wasn’t quite as studly looking as this, needless to say, but he was a handsome bay and a good worker bee who ended up being a very reliable ammy jumper.
And in my dreams, the ones that magickally make me 20 years younger, I’m sitting astride Bert at the in-gate, awaiting my round. But I have to say that Ernie is really starting to look put together. Seriously. He’s going to be a leaner, breedier type than Bert and very flashy.
You’re doing such a wonderful job, slowly bringing them along physically while also providing loving, consistent schooling. It’s a joy to follow your updates. I’m living vicariously through your adventure!
