More New Horses: Bert and Ernie

Afternoon: hose downs for all, and a walkabout for Ernie because he needs to see the sights, too!

Checking for trolls…

Ho hum.

You want me to what?

This is easier than it looks.

A little Bert booty. I am cracking up at the blue sky reflection outlining his wet bum.

This is so fun to read about their daily progress - would make a lovely book! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: You’re doing such a nice job with them - they look amazing already and are definitely maturing physically and mentally! Thanks for sharing them with us.

I am also grateful for the daily updates and love tracking their progress! This thread is one of my first stops of the day to start my morning off right  Thank you!

I love the sideways ears and thinking faces of… why are we doing this?

Thank you for posting their progress. I still  Burt, but Ernie is growing on me.

They are SO different but also very similar. :joy: I could not possibly begin to choose, but I can tell you that Bert was flabbergasted that I did not pick him first today.

I had a totally different plan for this morning, but I got side tracked and then decided to lunge Peach because dangit, I really need to get that horse restarted before it’s winter again. And then I had the cavesson in hand, and Ernie was right there, and I was like hey - let’s try this on you too big boy.

His head is an interesting combination of sizes - cob length, but pony diameter. I’m going to have to punch some extra holes in the nose and throat pieces to get it to fit him properly in the future.

We stood like this, pondering the magic of proprioception, for a solid minute.

Things were pretty ho hum. We did this yesterday, it’s old news now.

oh he looks CUTE in that cavesson! Like a grown-up professional horse.

He looks like he’s perfectly fine submitting to whatever The Lady wants, providing he can figure it out. And that’s a great quality. Good boy, Ernie!

I was absolutely shocked at how it instantly transformed the look of his head. The nose/browband really break up the length of it and he looks pretty darn majestic.

He does a pretty good impression of a stubborn donkey once in a while :joy: But it’s nothing to do with obstacles or challenges, it’s just when I first put the halter on him he’s like “must I?”. Yes. You must.

Now, friends… someone pop the champagne (and take a drink for me), because I crouched down and squinted at Ernie’s nethers for the millionth time and there are very clearly two :peanuts: in view. Where has the second one been hiding? Who knows. I don’t check every day. But it’s definitely there now. I’m still waiting til cold weather for any procedures, but it’s nice to know we won’t have to go on an expedition to find it.

Yay! Hopefully #2 will drop a bit more (if it needs to) between now and the happy day and nothing has to be too intrusive.

Well, look. Feronia is 27 years old, well-trained, and very experienced, and after almost 17 years together, she still asks, “Must I?” when I put on her rope halter to.take her for a walk. But she’s a she, so…

Well, no pics right now but Ernie is tucked into a stall next to Peach, sharing the alfalfa net. He was a little hesitant about walking into the barn at first, but seemed to understand the stall situation, so I left them inside with the fan. Peach may not be a great teacher about pasture living, but he’s a pro in the barn.

Bert was rather displeased that his musketeers are out of view for the first 30 minutes or so, but I think he’s over it now. He still has Cooper and Elmo next to him on the other side so he’s not ALONE alone.

Who’s a big boy?

I tried taking Bert in there now that he’s settled outside, but he’s just too nervous being in the stall yet. He only wanted to hang in the aisleway and share the net, so I took him back outside - which cause a mini meltdown. Unfortunately Bert’s go-to meltdown move is to rear :expressionless: and I know this, so we try to work through things slow and steady but this was just one of those toddler moments. The equivalent of kicking and screaming after your mom has dragged you out from the grocery store. :joy:
