BUT I WANT A LOLLY POPPPPPP!!!
Yesterday I gave the youngsters a day off because I really need to figure out how to get my other horses back to work and still do all the other things too (and be motivated about it all!).
Bert is always standing at the gate giving me the stink eye for not picking him. Ernie’s there about 50/50. I spent a few minutes with Bert while I was filling waters, practicing our picking up of the feet - he’s got the idea down with the hinds now, but is only willing to hold them up for about 3 seconds. Luckily for me, all of his feet have self-trimmed (read: chipped off) to a reasonably OK length and they are decently balanced, so we’re not rushing to get a trim done.
I’ve been keeping an eye on Ernie’s dangly bits and the second one seems to be here to stay. His feet need some work this week, so I’ll be chipping away at it in between all the other stuff.
Ernieeeeee!!
Sharing is Caring
Ear Twins
It goes without saying that it is HOT today. Gonna be hotter tomorrow.
Awww was the water hog jealous that he wasn’t getting hosed off?
Yup! If he’s not IN the picture, it’s a safe bet that it’s because he is THISCLOSE to me. Bert got his turn first and then Ernie decided it was hot enough to join. Bert is an attention hog.
What a character 🥹
You are Bert’s spirit animal!
It’s really Bert’s world and I’m just living in it. He believes he should be chosen first, last, and everything in between. ALL BERT ALL THE TIME! And it’s never enough, I work with him and then turn him loose and he’s like wait! Come back here! I’m not done with you!
It is honestly hard to believe this is the same horse that would actively run away from me two months ago Now I can’t get him off me! Other than the life skills we’re still working on, he’s just a happy little 2 year old now.
This has been so cool to watch!
Morning hosies!
I literally had to RUN from them and then turn around to get this picture.
Wet ponies = mud coating
I took Bert for a little walk around the outside world right about the time Fern started running laps in the little field. Bert tried really hard to stay composed and only had a couple mildly hairy moments
on the way back to safety.
Yeah, your getting the “she went crazy” look from all three.
Bert and I literally played “can’t catch me” around the round bale. We were on opposite sides and I’d step one way and he’d do the same and then I’d go the other way and he would too, back and forth like that. He looked puzzled but determined GET BACK HERE LADY!
I love the photo of the three of them side by side. The Three Amigos!
Me, too. Crop that one, print it, and frame it!
I love that one too and couldn’t resist a little iPhone editing magic to take out the truck, T-post, etc.
Bless you for editing out all my background junk. I know the place is not always picturesque backdrops, very much still a work in progress. What I lack in fancy facilities I make up for in care!
I know they are still ribby and have weight left to gain, we are not “there” yet, but I think it’s time for a comparison. As much for my own sake as the aunties! Roughly 2 months between photos.
Bert on May 19th
And July 17th
Ernie’s May 19th
Ernie July 24th:
How good they look (or don’t) hugely depends on the time of day with this heat - in the morning, everyone looks pretty good and refreshed but by late afternoon they are all varying degrees of peaked and withered. Except Fern, whose hardy bloodlines apparently make him immune to almost all weather extremes.
I’m just going to leave this here so that when I come back tomorrow or the next day and say that Ernie’s leg has blown up, we all know why. Just a classic little minor heel grab, probably when he was having a rare brave moment of playing with Bert earlier.
Ernie is growing!!!
They look night and day, their coat looks so much healthier and expression is so much brighter. You are doing fantastic with them.
I actually like them a little ribby as 2-3 year olds, better than overweight on those young, growing joints.
This looks like a catalogue page for ordering stripes/blazes; do you want small, medium, or large?
Yeah I don’t mind the rib on Bert, Ernie’s just still a little too ribby for my liking. I swear his legs have gotten longer though.
I have some errands to run today and the ‘feels like’ temp is already triple digits, so I turned the “fabulous five” out in the big field together. I’m hopeful that the trio will follow the other pair’s lead and hang out in the shade at some point instead of at the fence in the sun, but we’ll see.
Don’t beat yourself up ! Bert and Ernie look great! Their poor bodies are playing catch-up for not having good nutrition for their first 2 yrs.
I think they look great !
