More New Horses: Bert and Ernie

His legs and butt have gotten bigger. He really looks great, just having a growth spurt. Next spring, we won’t be able to recognize either of them.

make sure you are not comparing Ernie to your other chestnut chubbies. Although I am sure Elmo & Fern think they are svelte and require extrain grain rations. All of your horses look great, Bert & Ernie are still going through gangly phases and had such a deficiency when they came to you.

You know that old song, “Dust in the Wind”?

I give this photo the title, “Butts in the Grass.”

Definitely no comparing between the chubbies :joy: they all started out malnourished too, and I know it just takes time! I will just keep shoveling the alfalfa at Bert and Ernie (and Peach) and hopefully by winter everyone will round out.

Personally, I am looking forward to seeing new coats come in. Bert looks like he’s trying to impersonate a buckskin right now.

I approve

When I got back from town earlier, they were actually standing under a tree. It was a small tree, one that not everyone can fit under, but they get an A for effort anyway.

I am going to leave the kids out for another hour or so until the sun starts to go behind the trees, so since I had to fill the water again OF COURSE I offered to spray off anyone that was willing (and Elmo, who looked too hot).

Ernie even dipping his head in to get a little mist on the face

Bert post-shower, Peach said it’s hot but it’s not hot enough for that!

Huge Kudos to you. They look fab and the improvement is amazing in both health and personality.

I let DH lead Bert back to the paddock ahead of me while I took Peach and Ernie together, and Bert did SO GOOD!

I can’t be the only one looking forward to Bert and Ernie updates and photos. I adore them both.

Now that it’s morning and I’m not typing on a tiny screen, let me explain this more :joy:

DH has basic horse handling skills - no real experience or training with green or fractious horses. He knows enough that I can hand him a “normal” experienced horse and say put it in that field and be relatively confident that it will happen without anyone dying. Sometimes he holds horses for me when I trim but he doesn’t really grasp the finer points of keeping them still beyond just holding the lead rope.

I handed him the rope for Bert and told him DO NOT choke up on him, just be kind and brave and go slow. He laughed at the brave part because the man thinks he’s invincible, so I explained that I’m not saying that you are afraid of him - Bert gets nervous about the world outside the fence, so he needs you to be brave for him. Think positive, he wants to be good he’s just a little afraid. And off they went!

I, of course, stuck myself with the two airheads to lead at once. Peach and Ernie were displeased that I made them wait a few horse lengths before following Bert, so I had to holler at DH to pause while I navigated my two kites through the gate before he got any farther away. It’s not the first time I’ve led them together, and it’s always a gamble but I figure I’d rather walk two slightly jazzed horses than one who has completely flipped his lid because he was the last one left in the field. Several elbows had to be thrown in Peach’s direction early on and I had to remind Ernie to come back to earth once or twice, but after that it was all gravy.

They are both total joys to have around. Lack of training aside, these boys are first at the gate with their “PICK ME!!” faces on and they cannot get enough attention now. They really seem to want to do well.

Now, I’ve got to go sell my soul to the alfalfa man for a fresh load of the green stuff.

Thank you! They have so much personality and I try to convey that :joy:

Booties!

Get back here lady!

I think Ernie’s gotten taller. I might have to measure him this weekend.

Are you going to have tack to fit Bert? Because while I realize it’s a long ways off, me thinks he’s going to be Boys Extra Large in everything.

I missed so much!!! Wow wow wow!! What amazing progress! They look incredible. Love the picture of Ernie in the stall :joy: and that photo of the three is a framer.

Also, how did you get a non-horsey person to agree to marry you and is open to so many horses?! That’s like a gift. Actually, I’ll give you a gift…looks like you need a grey on your property… what about a little grey filly :joy:
