Morgan peeps— help! Am I crazy? YES I AM 🥰

yes, at an open regional dressage comp Lexie won all of her four classes (two each session), I believe she was the only Morgan there, she had been entered into sections A and B to ensure her a chance to qualify for the Morgan Nationals.

She had never been to a competition before (never been saddled until six weeks before) then four months later at Nationals

At Nationals she did well, I forget her placings as she was overshadowed by Fig who every one wanted to see. She was in the top three (?) of classes of about 15 each which spoke highly of her as all the other horses had many Years of training,

As with many Morgans they can and will do anything asked of them, earlier this year she was saddled in western gear and took to that as if she been doing western all of her life… that is when it was an eye opening as she looked just like Foxie, wearing Foxie’s western tack which fit her.

She still is working Dressage, daughter was able to get a very expensive made in England custom dressage saddle for her at a very reasonable cost (even found shipping from England at $159) . It was purchased as a Used saddle. When the saddle fitter looked at it she said that it had never been on a horse before and it fit Lexie as if it had been custom made for her.

So one constant factor with Morgans is the amount of tack one can accumulate

Well, I warned you all that I’m a terrible photographer, but wanted to update you lovely Morgan folks on Petey… he’s growing (and currently butt-high; even better!)! I’m starting to believe I might actually be able to sit on him at some point without squashing him😊. Still sweet as pie, though has his sassy moments (currently trying to nip some mouthiness in the bud, but he’s learning pretty fast — he knows to turn his head away and keep still if he wants his clicker treat). I’m insanely busy right now, so “training” is pretty relaxed, but we’re going on long walks and he’s picking up a lot through groundwork. He followed me over a little cross rail at liberty and his little jump is so cute!! Game and willing. He has a lot of curiosity and really likes to learn — always looking for the answer. I’m doing clicker-training and he is a sponge— if I put out any equipment, he’s immediately stepping over or on it, anticipating what I’m going to ask. I love his brain!!

Hey all! I’m horrible with updates and an even worse photographer, but it’s Petey’s 3rd birthday today and I couldn’t let that pass without mention . So here’s the birthday boy himself!!

He’s a peach — can’t say enough about what a delight he is. And everything I was warned about is so true — he’s SO smart, so people-oriented and sweet. He goes over obstacles, has started long-lining, has been introduced to a saddle and bridle, works at liberty… everything is EASY with him. He’s still a bit of a toddler — wants to put everything in his mouth, is super-curious, and needs some reminders about respecting space (loves to grab the hood of my coat as a joke) — but is growing and maturing every day. Still butt-high — butt is about 14.2; withers about 14.1. I can live with the height; just need him to fill out a bit. I sat on him for a second (slithered on bareback while he was parked at the mounting block) and he was totally unconcerned. Wish I had some better photos and videos to share, but hope this is better than nothing! The plan is to try riding this spring, but depends on how he continues to grow — if he’s not ready, we’ll spend the spring and summer hiking the hills in hand :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:.
Here he is being his goofy self — and a sort-of confo pic. And him losing his baby teeth!

For an impulse buy born of a broken heart, he’s turned out to be exactly the medicine I needed. I’m a Morgan peep for good, now! Thanks, COTH enablers — I owe you one!

Over the decades of owning Morgans we have found they say much more with their eyes than voice

Actually the first one we bought we bought specifically because of the way she look at us. We have looked extensively for a horse for our kids, I know we viewed well over four hundred head. It was during one farm visit where we were being shown a lot of horses, they had some fifty plus that could be for sale, we kept walking by this one filly who had just been brought in to start training, she was a long yearling. But every time we walk by her corner stall, her eyes followed us.

We left the farm but while driving away we talked about “that filly” deciding even though she was not what we wanted at the time we felt we could not pass on her. So turned around going back to purchase her. We kept her the rest of life, passing away naturally at 28

Your young Morgan acts just like my daughters long yearling, he is just a joy to work with as he seems to know what he needs to do before even being taught

Thanks, @clanter! Sounds like you picked a good ‘un with that filly. You are right about the eyes — so expressive, but also seeking connection.

From this morning. As I suspected, he is actually just a large dog.

I’ve been thinking about you and Petey, fargaloo, and hoped you were doing well! He’s ADORABLE. I love that baby pic. “I might be new, but I’m ready to cause trouble.” :joy:

Have you given him a squeaky toy yet? I had one that loved his rubber chicken squeaky toy. Whenever he wanted attention he ran around and squeaked it like crazy.

thanks @appypaint! I think he’s adorable (but I’m a wee bit biased!). Ready to cause trouble, indeed!!

The only drawback to him being so damn smart is that “our” mistakes are entirely my own. The first time I long-lined him, I was fussing with the equipment (the surcingle was too big, so I had to jury-rig it; sorting out the lines, etc.). He stood patiently like a rock (unlike my dear departed mare whose first impulse on having the lines attached was to spin in circles), and finally turned and looked at me in exasperation, like “do you actually know what you are doing or are you just winging it?”

What a great idea!! I’m sure he’d love it (the other boarders and horses may not, so much!)
