So I bought a hony to flip the other week…15h, 4yr old, registered palomino Morgan. Figured he was cute enough and cheap enough I could put 30 days on him and find him a great trail home. Well, I broke him a few days after bringing him home, and this week I thought I’d point him at a few fences and see how he did. HOLY COW! The pictures on this Flickr account are of his first time over baby XC fences, and his first ever oxer. And a little video! Thinking this one might have to stick around a little longer than planned?? I had NO idea Morgans could jump! Anyone ever evented or had one as a jumper? I’m so used to my Connemaras…this guy has really impressed me though! Thanks for letting me brag a lil!
Of course Morgan’s can jump
At Morgan horse shows they have entire jumping divisions. There are different “types” of course between saddle seat, hunt seat, western etc. But they can make a fine all around horse and partner! If that’s his niche, then go with it. He may make a fine little eventer.
Any horse can jump, some just do it better than others.
Denny Emerson started off eventing Morgans.
I just had to comment, what a cute little guy!
I kind of want that
Those sport-bred and old-timey Morgans are really the cat’s pajamas if you ask me. Built to be equine utility players, they’re sturdy, often with great minds, and very willing to do a workmanlike job at whatever you throw at them. Neat little horse you have!
Of course they can jump.
I leased a jumper back in the day who was a Morgan, his owner didn’t do a ton of showing but he was easily a 1.20m horse… Super cool guy.
My friend evented her 14.3 hand Morgan to preliminary.
In my area the Statesman line of Morgans is well known for their jumping ability.
As far as I can tell Morgans seem capable of doing - and excelling - in a lot of things. the original utility vehicle.
I currently do low-level Eventing with my Morgan with plans to keep on moving up. He is a super jumper and very careful, hates to touch a rail! My trainer and I always joke that he thinks he is going to Rolex. He is quite the enthusiastic jumper at times. Generally they are super cute movers, forward thinking and can trot for days! https://www.facebook.com/permalink.p…d=109161715946
I think you need to flip him to me!
Thanks for the replies all! Super cool to see that Morgans are so versatile in these disciplines! Hopefully I can get him a great start and find his niche. I have to sell one before winter…and the other mare I have in that Fickr account is a spicy tamale so as much as I love him he might be my best bet
We have one at my barn who totes his 10 year old owner around the baby jumpers and dressage shows. She also runs barrels on him with her friends from time to time. He’s SUPER!
So you bought him 2 weeks ago, started him under saddle a few days later, and you’re jumping him already?
Hey, some are born broke! I got on a Connemara once & walked, trotted, cantered, did poles & did a course of Xs, thinking he was broke–but unbeknownst to me, he’d only ever been sat on in the stall!
I’m next in line for your Morgan!
Enjoytheride yes! He’s definitely one of those born brokers. The second day I was on him he felt so confident I took him out into the massive pasture and went for a lope, both away and towards home! I seriously could not believe this horse had never been sat on, similar to Salty’s story! He’s definitely shown a bit of attitude and sass since then, but the good ones usually do I think
Yes! I had a Morgan/TB who took me Prelim and she’d done Intermediate with her previous rider. Her siblings (also half TB) did long format **s and Advanced. Her dam had been an all around sort who did saddleseat, dressage, jumpers and eventing before producing that line of horses who are still competing around New England although the amount of Morgan blood has diminished with each generation.
My girl hated dressage, didn’t walk, ever, even in the pasture. but I think she stopped once in her life - on her last XC course when she had pulled a muscle. She saw flags and you kind of hung on. Boy do I miss the old battleaxe.
An interesting blog by Jennifer McFall about her morgan gelding Dragonfire Kublakhan:

Is this the little number that came out of Alabama? IF so I wanted him so bad to be a CDE (combined driving) pony… Looks like quite the catch.
