Moving barns, not sure how to cut things off with my trainer

Yes, in light of the additional information, a text to the old trainer saying something like “Have missed seeing you and x, y and z horses. Wanted to let you know that I’m taking lessons/leasing a horse at a barn closer to my college, the shorter commute means I’ll be able to ride more often. Thanks for all your help with my riding, hope everything’s going well for you.”

I think old trainer will read this text, think “Oh, cool, that’s what happened to her. Good to know.” and go on about her day.

Maybe, just maybe, old trainer will text back and say “Thanks for letting us know. Good luck with your riding!”

In re: my above story, the instructor I mentioned, who became my mentor, was pretty much my model for how to be a decent human in the horse business.

If she saw a former student or client at a horse show, she would make a point of speaking to them and saying something nice about their riding or the horse they were on. Students come and students go, but a reputation for being polite and professional is forever.

I don’t think you need to overthink this. When in doubt, thank people for what they have done for you and err on the side of being gracious. Your previous trainer is a professional. I’m sure she is used to clients changing barns based on their needs/locations/schedules. Personally, I think you should just go ahead and ride at the other barn. Depending on what seems more natural, I think it would be reasonable to send a text message or a thank you card. Let her know that you are riding at a place that is more conveniently located to where you are right now, but you miss her and you are so thankful for the instruction you received with her and the good memories you have from her barn.

I’m a BO, not a trainer, but I get texts from ex-clients all the time. They keep me posted as to what they and their horses are up to and I find it very enjoyable. Some of them are even boarding at nearby barns that could be construed as my “competitors” and that is a total non-issue. There are many details that go into choosing a trainer and a barn to get just the right fit. Any nice normal trainer would simply be happy for you that you are enjoying your riding and that you thought to thank them.

This is the very worst thing to do. A real face to face convo is the best. Always. It’s gonna hurt but it’s the right thing to do. Always.

You’ve swooped in late to the party. Have you read through everything?
