Ok so I’m gonna dive in, because hell… I have a big mouth and strong opinions and I don’t mind waving both around. But I’ve also been a member of these forums since 2000 (or so) and I feel like I do have some things to say.

As others have said… if there’s smoke often there is fire. Ellen has a shaky (that’s a kind word) reputation that makes it easy to believing this awful list of infractions.

Among the defenders and proponents of side A versus side B I have seen no actual discussions about some of the scariest charges…so let’s try to redirect:
a) Would you be happy with an 8(!!) yr old child doing morning barn on any of your horses without adult supervision? What if it was your child?
b) If someone took your horse out of state to school xc with a rider other than yourself without your knowledge/ permission… what would your reaction be?
c) 8 hours of colic behavior and no notification… Hell… let’s make it 4 hours… for what you pay a month… what exactly would you do if they’d known that time and had not at least given you a call to say “Hey I noticed… right now I’m watching it but do you want me to do more?” I’m biased because I am close to and work at New Bolton… but I get that not everyone has facilities in their back yards nor the money to actually contemplate that series of costs. But seriously no communication is a COMMON Barn problem. DISCUSS.
- As a point of fact I own 5 horses currently. 3 at one farm, 2 at 2 other farms. If all 5 were at one place and I had to move them, even in a situation like this that was progressively deteriorating, it would be a challenge. I live in probably one of the EASIEST places in the world to find boarding. And most of it would be within 25 mins of my house. It would be tough but doable, but that’s just finding them places to live, not with full on amenity locales. In Dallas where a dear friend lives…impossible. Especially if you’re looking to keep them in a barn with the ability to prep for competitions with a competent coach that you get along with and trust to care for your horses when you’re away…really not that easy.
I am lucky to come to this 9 pages in and have read ALL the posts and looked at the OP’s FB pages. I don’t have to wonder if she’s telling the truth. HALF of her list is enough for me. The rest is just added horror. I have lost a horse but it was crap luck (Lightning, turned out in a field with a shed and lightning rods…wrong place at wrong time). I know the loss factor. I cannot imagine having been able to ask for my mare to have not be turned out in a dangerous area and been ignored and lost her anyway. That would have truly endangered my ability to stay outside of jail!
Those who are questioning the OP have not really stood in her shoes. You may think you have, but you haven’t. Those defending the coach, honestly… look close, you will likely be a victim in the future. If you aren’t, great. But this kind of false idol worship usually comes with great costs.
To close, OP, I’m sorry you’ve gone through this but I get it. To everyone not focusing on the 17 point list… maybe we could show a little Christmas/Holiday spirit and talk about how WE WOULD HAVE REACTED, and let the OP know that we too would be horrified, confused and ashamed. At least for your horse’s sake I hope you would.
