My husband has cancer and I'm really struggling

Grrrr, not the turn anyone wants, but SO glad everyone is on top of this and he’s getting help. Prayers and jingles for sure!

My older brother, 89, just died a month ago.
He fell, broke several bones, they decided to replace one bad hip while they were patching him up.
He was doing fine when later sepsis set in and he was gone before treatment could help.

Do take infections seriously, they can be fulminant, some times a few hours can make an important difference.

OP, glad that you are so very careful, is very important.
Hope he will now heal without any more trouble.

Thank you all. My friend brought me over to the hospital to see him after I stopped home and fed the kitties. He is receiving a blood transfusion and is currently stable.
Wonder if his surgeon will regret telling me he “seemed fine” when they didn’t get urine temp or bloodwork yesterday. He has sepsis and acute renal failure. Levels are trending good at this time.

More jingles and prayers🙏.

I’m so glad you had him checked for sepsis.

A side note on the renal failure: If it becomes permanent (it may not; acute failure can sometimes recover), know that I’ve been on dialysis for over two years and it isn’t nearly the big deal I thought it would be. YMMV, of course, but I wanted to mention my success with it. I have lots of other serious health problems unrelated to kidney failure, but doing dialysis is the easiest part of all of it. It’s definitely life changing, don’t get me wrong, but it is possible to live a good life with it. If his kidney failure becomes pemanent and you want to talk about life on dialysis, I’ll be glad to share my experience and knowledge.

Hugs, Rebecca

Oh my goodness. I’m glad you caught it and I think I would be going up the chain with that surgeon who didn’t check.

Damn straight I am. They could have had him come in last week to be evaluated in person. They could have taken his temp, urine and bloodwork on Wednesday when his foley came out, knowing he was on antibiotics for a uti. A uti is super serious after this kind of surgery. It all could have been caught earlier. I have his emails to me and a dictated voice mail from yesterday morning saying this- as we were in ER and someone was finally listening to me. The end is cut off but you get the drift-

Creatinine was 6 last night and 3.6 this morning. Trending down so hopefully no long term renal issues.

Ugh that’s frustrating. Good for you for getting him in asap though. My dad has stage 4 melanoma and went through four rounds of immunotherapy treatments earlier this year. The last three rounds each sent him to the ICU. The third round impacted his kidneys but no one relayed that information to my parents so they agreed to do a fourth round of immunotherapy with just one drug instead of two. That sent him back to the ICU with acute renal failure and a few months of dialysis.

He’s now doing much better, though he seems to need to stay on a low dose steroid indefinitely or else he gets recurring fevers, nausea, low blood pressure, dehydration, etc. As long as he’s on the steroid you would never know that he’s a stage 4 cancer patient.

Hopefully everything was caught in time for your husband. I just wanted to share this though as I seem to recall you had mentioned possible immunotherapy down the road. The side effects can be quite serious even if the treatment is successful. But like anything with the immune system everyone will react differently.

He’s still in the hospital but much better. Sitting in chair, able to get himself cleaned up and use bathroom on his own etc. He is also eating although appetite is not the greatest.
Temp and BP have normalized.
Some levels are still a bit off but he has made vast improvement. His entire body was stressed and shutting down. I’m grateful that we caught it and got him the treatment he desperately needed.
He needs a follow up ct and they will confirm if any of the fluid seen last week needs to be drained or if there is and abscess. If not that will be very good news and one less hurdle.
