Just an update for anyone still following along or interested…

Today, hubby had his first post op appt. He had his Foley catheter removed and they put a plug in his suprapubic cath with Malecot drain (such fancy terms). With the assistance of me, the surgeon and a nice young resident, my poor husband got “try out” his neobladder with all of us looking on. And cheering- the surgeon was clapping. So far, the new bladder is functioning well.

Last week, temps dropped here and fall kicked in. Hubby has been running cold and had a night of shivering and teeth chattering for a few hours. The next morning I thought he felt warm and took his temp to be 100.2. We called the Dr office and went for a urinalysis which showed bacteria and a few other signs of a UTI. Hard to tell if it really is a true infection or if the sample was contaminated coming from a catheter bag. In any case, they started him on an antibiotic the first day we called, which he has for one more week. Two more incidents of the shivers which seems temperature related- if he’s under covers and heated mattress pad, it subsides. Today he seemed to be hovering around 99 for temp but says he feels okay. Dr didn’t seem concerned today, but they also did not do another urinalysis. Of course they have you in the lookout for sepsis so I’m feeling a bit paranoid there.

He goes back next week for the final suprapubic cath to come out, and also has his follow up with oncology. Surgeon said no more treatment is needed. Will be interesting to see if oncology says same. I would imagine so but who knows?

I am sure we are all still following along and sending jingles and continued healing vibes! What an ordeal he and you have gone through, but it sounds like he’s doing incredibly well, just watching for infection or complications. No more treatment sounds wonderful!

I hope next weeks appointment goes well and you two get good news!

I’m glad he’s doing well so far for the most part, and they seem to be getting the infection under control. But you’re very smart to stay on top of that those can get out of hand quickly and in his situation that would not be good. Sending jingles and happy thoughts please keep us updated

First, thanks for the update! I’m sure it’s still a bit overwhelming learning new things! It sounds like it’s at least slowing down and you’ll be in a nice routine soon.

For the shivers - fwiw, when my husband had hernia surgery, with general anesthesia, he had very similar issues with regulating his body temp for a couple of months. Obviously the fever issue is different, but if he continues to have some cold spells, consider it may be related to the anesthesia.

Well, I took him to our great local hospital and they are on it doing a work up for sepsis. :pray:t2:

ETA- they will be transporting by ambulance to UW. It’s about an hour away. Not what we wanted when we’ve gone this far.

Oh my Heavens… jingling and prayers. Thank goodness it appears you caught it early and he’s on some antibiotic.

THIS!
Friend’s husband had a hip replaced in his late 70s.
I talked to her (they’re 2h from me) post surgery & she mentioned he was “talking funny” & had a slight fever.
I told her to get him to an ER ASAP - thinking either infection or he’d thrown a clot & the “funny” could be a stroke.
It was the former, but treated quickly no setback.
He’s 85 now & doing great.

Going to put the curb chains on Standby, in case Jingles are needed!
