My husband has cancer and I'm really struggling

While we are feeling much thanks today and getting ready for the Packer game, my husband will need another surgery to repair the left ureter which isn’t functioning well. It ha a narrowing or a stricture likely due to scar tissue or just not healing right. He could opt for observation but there would likely be irreparable damage to the left kidney. We just found out yesterday at his surgical follow up so are processing the news.
We made a small dinner and are lying low but in good spirits.
Happy Thanksgiving !!

We probably won’t have the surgery until after Christmas. Need some additional time for him to just feel normal and comfortable about having a surgery after sepsis. His first reaction was he!! no…which his doctor was very understanding of. But as we mull it over and look into it, it’s the best long term solution. Surgeon was scheduling a month out so we will try to enjoy a little slice of normal while we can.

We have a share too! Still have my grandpas seats from the 60s too. We don’t go to as may games anymore but maybe we need to change that next year :green_heart::yellow_heart:

That is so cool! We have only gone to three games at Lambeau since we live in Oregon. However, we have gone to a number of games when they played the Seahawks.

It’s really neat you have the family connection. One of my uncles attended the “ice bowl.”

Update- nephrostomy tube will be replaced this week Thursday. They will use some prophylactic antibiotics. Then, we will really be starting the new year off with a bang - my husband will be admitted New Year’s Day for antibiotics and surgery prep and surgery on the 2nd. Way to meet that deductible right outta the gate :joy:

Is this part of the expected progression?

Sounds like y’all are doing great, other than the infection setback (and i know it was super scary)! Jingling like mad for all to go well.

No, this is considered a complication from surgery or the infection. Scar tissue has formed on the ureter so it cannot drain from the kidney to the bladder. I guess it happens about 5% of the time, yeah us.
The neph tube drains urine from the kidney so it can rid the body of it instead of it being stuck in the kidney which can cause infection and kidney failure.
The surgery will repair the ureter itself. In extreme cases, some people have had to have the kidney removed. I hope we can preserve function and get the ureter working properly!

Starting off the New Year on the right foot. NYE dinner plans were thwarted by a trip to the ER and admission a day earlier than planned. Not septic, but a kidney/neph tube infection. So he’s on iv antibiotics and Tylenol. Surgery for ureter repair still planned for tomorrow and they will remove the post surgical fluid that’s been sitting there since bladder removal surgery.

In a strange twist of fate, another CotH member’s husband was hospitalized at the same hospital we were at for the ER. We were able to meet up, hug and cry. This is not where any of us want to be at NY or any any time really.

We had a nice month of my husband feeling pretty good, cutting down a tree, a few dinners out, saw some friends and had a nice Christmas. I was hoping we could hang in there until today without any issues but yesterday afternoon he spiked a fever and the shakes started again.
I really hope and pray he can get beyond the chronic infections he has had since his bladder removal. They aren’t kidding when they say this surgery is life altering.
