Perhaps someone here can help me identify a style of breeches with a bit more fabric in the hip/thigh. I’m not talking about breeches sized for fuller figures/extra curvy/etc. nor do I want the old school elephant ear breeches that stood out like hoop skirts. I simply want a more generous, non-skin tight breech that might soften my no longer svelte upper leg. Any suggestions?
Tailored Sportsman Trophy Hunter. I do have a generous hip/thigh as well as a smallish waist and these are about as flattering as I’m going to get. Fabric is smoothing, and there’s enough room to move.
Oh, yes, definitely Tailored Sportsman Trophy Hunter. The most popular style is the low rise, and before you panic, it isn’t all that low–try before you judge. The low rise version also comes in a nice array of colors, some of which are quite lovely for cubbing. It does also come in a medium rise version, which I haven’t tried. The other TS styles are shaped differently, so don’t be fooled.
I also recommend a pair of spanx or the jockey skimmies. They provide a very nice smooth outline and also are quite comfortable to ride in. In fact, you might find that your previous breeches are quite improved when combined with the spanx.
For fall/winter pants, Kerrits makes–in addition to their warm fuzzy pull-ons–a breech that I think is called the crossover. If you can find it in the knee patch version in tan, those pants are the bomb. I don’t care for the full seat version. Very stretchy and comfortable, traditional fit/look/styling, and just a touch extra warmth for those crisp mornings.
As an aside, how was your Charlottesville trip?
Trophy hunters are the best. Mid-rise works better than low rise for me. I found a lot of different options at this tack shop since I prefer front zip. http://www.lexingtonhorse.com/
Recently purchased a pair of rust Ovation Taylored breeches, and they fit very generously through the hip/thigh. A little less money than the Trophy Hunters, but are equally flattering and well made. Plus, I just love the euro seat design. They also come in side or front zip.
Victory Canter I think has them in all sizes/colors
I really like the Ariat Performer breeches. They hold everything in without being too revealing, but hae a comfortable and generous fabric. The cut is flattering to my thickening, 53 year old waist and they are not so expensive. Two zip pockets. Hae 2 pair and like them much more than my TSs.
Thanks to all for the suggestions and this gives me a great place to start. Like MaybeMorgan I think I look better in a modest rise with a front zipper but everything I’ve tried so far seems skin tight in the wrong places and creates a less than flattering look.
Have you looked at the Hubertus hunt flairs on horsecountrylife.com? I love that look, just the slightest flare and small pleats in front. I think they are so attractive, much more so than skin tight breeches. There are a couple of other breeches on that website that might suit also.
The new Dublin Shapely breeches are very attractive and cut with more room in hip/thigh. Mid-rise, substantial fabric and nice details. Great pricing, too, at under $100.
BAC, I do like the look Hubertus Flairs and the Aiken breeches from HC. They are stylish without the skin tight look. Does anyone own a pair of anything similar? Are they comfortable?
I find the Tredstep breeches are really comfortable with thick enough yet stretchy fabric, and still have room to move around. They also come up to my natural waist. Im in my 60’s and just hate those low rise breeches. You would think that the breech companies would figure out that those of us who are no longer in our teens and 20’s are not going to be interested in anything in the low rise category. Gee whiz! We have the money to buy riding clothes and apparel so WHY aren’t they accomodating our needs? What I also find interesting, is that it is very difficult to figure out what the “cut” of the breeches will be when you buy them on line. We live out in the country which is great for riding but not great for shopping. So I end up finding retailers who will ship for free both ways, and order 5 or 6 pairs…try them on, keep the ones that are up to my waist and comfortable, and return the rest.
Question: Why do people really want a thicker material? I’m in my 50s also and have lumps to smooth out but I get way, way, way too hot & uncomfortable in a thick material. Doesn’t that bother any of you? I like the thinnest material that will hold up. (Well, except for in the dead of winter, then it is time for the Tropical Rider Toasties.)

I bought a couple of pair of Shapely when I went back to riding in 2002 after a long break from riding but they weren’t by Dublin, maybe Ovation? They weren’t the prettiest but they were a substantial fabric and wore like iron. After I lost weight I tried to shrink them in warm water and the dryer and nothing phased them. I think they would be great for hunting where you probably want something more durable.

As a short waisted person, I’m delighted with low rise after a lifetime of having breeches come up to my armpits or sag down to my knees. The Tailored Sportsmans are labeled as low rise but sit perfectly at my waist.

Yes, there have been a few companies with “Shapely” styles. These are brand new to the market, along with their cousins, the Dublin Signature and Dublin Slender. They are durable, but not thick at all. Very flattering. (And the Shapely is not for the really full-figured gal, like the Fuller Fillies… the Dublin Shapely just gives some more room than average in the hip and thighs.)
I just remembered mine were Cotton Naturals. They were just as you described, nothing like the Fuller Fillies stuff, just a little more room in the hips/thighs for women who aren’t built like sticks.

Amen! I’m always on the lookout for Mom Breeches!!! Full seat is a bonus!!
As an aside, I twitch when I see photos on COTH web site and magazine of females in low rise breeches wearing shad bellies with some goofy wide belt. The broken line of: end of coat, white shirt, belt then breeches on the hip makes me gag. I’m a geezer so I can feel this way.

Thin material shows every lump and line. A little thicker holds things in smoothly. If it breathes, it is not any hotter. Those thin britches are sort of like tights :/. Ewwwww, especially riding behind someone.

so glad someone else thinks this. That and too tall boots. No, they shouldn’t break behind your knee.
