Need advice - rocking horse hoof color

OK. So, I took on a project of refinishing my childhood rocking horse. I was instructed to make it look like my young mare, Shayney.

I am up to the point of painting the hooves back on. Original rocking horse had black hooves, no stockings. Shayney has white stockings/socks, so my question is - do I paint the hooves the peachy color they actually are? Or just paint them black?

Here’s the original rocking horse, and the legs as they stand now.

Ps: I am a wrench turner, not a wood worker. NEVER AGAIN. Ever.

What would you like? That’s the important question.

Well, with the clay horses I make, when socks are present I often paint the hooves a tan or beige colour. It seems to look the most natural to me.

This is for my nephew, so I don’t think he would care.

What I would like: I would like this project to be OVER so that I can have my spare bedroom back.

Ok. I have a peachy skin tone, and a darker beigey color. I was going to mix them together and see what I get.

Maybe try the light color first, and if you don’t like it you can paint over it in black?

It looks great, btw!

I think that’s what I’ll do. I’ll take a picture with the natural color and let you guys decide.

OK. Paint is still wet, but what do we think?

Looks good! You have far more patience than me.

Everything with this godforsaken project has taken two or three tries for me. Woodworking is an art, one that I am not familiar with or good at. It’s been an infuriating project, to say the least. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel though!

Looks great! You’ll have to share the finished product. What a lucky nephew, and how cute that he requested his own mini Shayney! I’m not normally a kid person but you can bet I would warm up to one a whole lot quicker if they asked for a mini version of my horse, haha.

might need to upgrade that horse with the OSHA safety recommendations

I fell off that thing violently as a child more times than I can count. I guess that explains a lot

I vote for the peachy Matches Shaney paintjob.
Looks great, especially the darker stain :+1:
Hate to ask, but how are you redoing the mane & tail?

I would go with a mane and tail set, made to use on rocking horses. The original looks like a floor mop served as the donor.

I made them from yarn. Not hard at all. Right now they’re too long, I’ll trim them once installed!

Whoa that’s cool! I’ve already made mine but that’s a great idea!
