Due to the head trauma, a person or animal may experience a rapid rise in fever…a central temperature rise due to the inflammatory response to brain injury. The high temperatures are associated with a bad prognosis for recovery. It was imperative to keep his temperature down.
OMG. It is horrifying to think that they believe their lives to now be in danger.
Did you not see this post earlier on this thread?
And I am not defending him but explaining about my personal experience with him as well as the experiences of two friends who sent horses to him/trained with him.
Again - I hope he suffers the consequences he deserves for what is apparently a pattern of abuse of horses as well as mistreatment of and threats toward his staff.
then why continue with this type of comment…
“Parra’s method was apparently something he had learned SOMEHWERE about dealing with bullish young stallions. I also understand that the horse had been turned down by several other reputable colt starting / stallion training operations, and Parra was pretty much a last resort for the owner. But he obviously had no business trying to start a 3 y/o colt - he was out of his element.”
He is a grown man who learned a lot of things along the way as we all do, it does not mean we don’t know right from wrong and do something just because we learned it SOMEWHERE. I just think you should stop with the excuses.
I hope you don’t mind my asking, what happened to William after this horrible incident?
Apparently I am wrong.
Oh cr*p I had no idea. I remember the incident but may have confused it with something similar where the horse was moved and put into some kind of rehab program.
He didn’t die to my knowledge. I googled and he lived until last year, that’s what I read. His owner stated, he was deaf and blind for 6 months after the event, but did somehow recover but had lifelong neurological issues.
Whhhoops, I too must be confusing it with a similar incident
It’s about time they’re doing something. There has been video evidence in addition to allegations of abuse for more than a decade against Cesar Parra… And, now, in 2024, the owners that have horses with him should be charged and sat down as well. It’s my opinion that the horses’ owners aren’t victims, but perpetrators of abuse as well. Willful ignorance is no excuse. The horses are the only victims.
Sorry, I wasn’t clear. I was trying to imply that because he had likely learned that technique elsewhere, he isn’t the only one who uses it. IOW, abuse and harsh training methods did not originate with him, nor are they unique to him. Sadly, questionable and even despicable training techniques go on behind the closed doors of MANY professionals, including other highly lauded people such as Anky van Grunsven, Patrick Kittel, Andreas Helgstrand, and others. There is no excuse for it no matter who the person is, and thank God for the internet and video and people who have the courage to step forward and expose it.
I have asked permission to share. This was William at his RPSI inspection in 2015. His head tilt is from the injury.
And at liberty. Shows the power of love for a horse. He was such a Wonderful stallion.
I was heartened to know that he recovered, to the extent that he did. He was a beautiful horse who did not deserve the horror he had to endure.
Someone asked, and I’m just confirming that William did pass away last year.
Such a handsome horse.
Parra won’t be showing at USEF shows. USEF has reciprocity with the FEI. If you are suspended by the FEI you are suspended by USEF.
From USEF website ineligibility list;
PARRA, CESAR (4027086) JUPITER, FL 2/2/2024 FEI Provisional Suspension Dressage
Note/update: I wrote this when I was thinking the controvery was the one lungeing incident a number of years ago, when social media was not a thing, and which to my knowledge, offered a few grainy photos and allegations from the client. The most recent footage, of course, is different. I’m leaving my original comment as-is so that subsequent comments make sense.
remember the controvery – it happened on a lunge line which can be so dangerous, and things happen quickly. As a rider with reliable, older horses, I’ve found myself in dicey situations lungeing, and have a broken finger to show for it. The client shared photos, disturbing but…
I remember at Dressage at Devon, his ride on Stan the Man was a showman’s delight. I agree with others that say allegations are not enough. Horrible accidents happen.
So because you saw him at Devon riding well excuses all the videos? Exactly how did he train Van the Man to get that ride? Do the ends justify the means? Is it your contention that it’s all accidents? William was not the first horse he flipped. Nor the last. But hopefully, there will not be more.
Enough allegations are enough to convince me to never have any dealings with this man. Especially when backed by such damning video evidence.
