New “Forage Only” Complete Feed

I was looking into this as a way to consolidate feed components…but I don’t think its going to be worth it.

We do 1/2 lb of soaked beet pulp shreds as a carrier for:

  • Vermont Blend Pro
  • Omgea E (flax + vitamin E)
  • Electrolytes
  • Tract Guard

He gets that twice a day. I was thinking I could sub out the beet pulp shreds for the Unbeetable, but I would still have to purchase a standalone Vit E supplement. I also don’t know if he would get enough of the Flax oil Unbeetable contains at such a low feeding rate. Ball parking, it doesn’t look like it will save me any real $ either so I don’t think Im going to mess with something thats working. I think they will do well with this product though, its a great base for a forage balancer.

I see it on my TSCs product list, but you can’t order nor does it specify when you can yet.

@FromTheGalaxy, Would you be comfortable sharing the location or phone number … pm if you’d prefer. I have one picky eater that refuses everything I don’t mix up “ just right”. I toss it and start over…I’m hoping this will help.

The Unbeetable guy told me it would be available in early December, so I was surprised to see it on their website a couple of weeks ago

I just got off the phone w him!!! What a nice person!!! He gave me all the contact information so my regular feed store could order it, if they will/want to.

As an update…I’ve not heard a thing from my feed mill even though I’ve checked in daily. I looked at Tractor Supply; one can order on line now!

Has anyone found a feed rate yet? I’m interested but if it calls for something ridiculous like 10 - 20 lbs daily, then maybe not so much. I have a senior that can’t chew long grass or hay (well, he chews and then spits out the quidded mass), so daily he gets six pounds of Triple Crown Senior, four pounds of a forage pellet that I have to soak, plus one lb. of Purina Enrich balancer. If I can replace the TCS and the other forage pellet with this and forego soaking, then maybe we’re on to something!

TSC has this on their website, at least in my area. Suggested feed rate is 2% of body weight; example is 22# for 1100# horse (plus vitamin mineral supplement). Price listed is $25.99 for 50#.

I ordered yesterday and it should be here tomorrow. I’m excited to try it. I’m hoping with the addition of flax oil I can ditch the Triple Crown Senior and fat supplement, and obviously the soaking. We’ll see!

that’s an appropriate feed rate if it’s the only forage the horse gets.

It’s a forage product, so you feed it according to the horse’s and situation’s need. Total hay replacement? 15-20lb. Additional calories on top of a normal base diet? Depends on what the horse needs.

My use for this will be to replace the separate beep and alf pellets I currently use as a mixer, and if my 33yo likes it, some additional calories which will be pretty much as much as he’s willing to eat.

It’s not a fortified product, so if you’re using TC Sr for calories and nutrition, it’s not a replacement for that. You’d at least need to add a ration balancer. It’s also only 4% fat, so not a lot of flax oil. It’s 1480 cal/lb, which is less than TC Sr at 1546. I’m also not sure if you mean you’re soaking TC Sr now and wouldn’t need to soak this, but if so, I would absolutely soak this if you’re having to soak the sr

Thanks - I wasn’t clear! I currently feed soaked alfalfa/timothy cubes and beet pulp along with a balancer. Only the two harder keepers get TCS for additional calories (with reduced balancer). They’re all young with good dentition, so I can safely eliminate soaking. Hoping this simplifies things a bit, even if I have to feed a little more.

Gotcha, thanks! I’ve seen enough people think the product is a complete feed, that I had to ask

I appreciate it! I knew as soon as I hit reply I should have been clearer. I’ve been waiting months for this feed, so I really REALLY hope it works for my kiddos.

On the TSC website it’s now called “Unbeetable Feeds Blend Pellet.”

My bags arrived today. Shipping was quick, but one of the bags arrived ripped. Annoying and something I’ll have to keep an eye on. I started transitioning them tonight and everyone ate it, even the mare who usually turns her nose up at regular alfalfa pellets.

In case anyone wants to see a size comparison. Top is Triple Crown Senior, middle is Forage Only, and bottom is Standlee Alfalfa Pellets. I was surprised how small the Forage Only is!

Thanks for the sizing! I’d seen their description and I’d assumed it was sized more like a foal pellet, and that looks about right. How hard are they?

Not very hard, I can easily break them with my fingers

Everything we put into our horses is dehydrated, and water is essential to digestion and life! So, no matter if it says no soaking required, I am soaking it to feed.
