New horse
I would like to clerify everything since so many people want to make assumptions. First of all, we are waiting until the spring to go pick him up. He is having him gelded this upcoming week and is going to start on his riding. He has a very good temperment. And my uncle has been a breeder/trainer for over 40 years. He would not give me a horse he did not feel i was capable of handling. As for the mare, she is still be riden and in great health. My conern was bringing her down as well due to her age. But i told him wed come meet her and see how she was doing. As for a truck, yes i have a chevy 2500 hd that is more than capable of pulling horses. As for trailering my husband has a lot of experience trailering. We intend to drive straight through there, its a 13 hour drive. And stat there for a day and drive back stopping every 3 hours for about an hour. As for health certifications and coggins i am well aware of regulations and he will have everything needed along with his registration papers. And yes my uncle is paying to have him gelded. And no these are not him trying to pawn them off on me. I have a great relationship with him and he told me if i ever had the opportunity to get a horse that he would give me one or two. And he is giving me ali who alone hes invested over 10k into. Not because hes pawning him off on me because hes actually had people wanting to purchase him. But hed rather give him ti me to help me reach my dreams and potential. Where ali will be staying i still have plenty of time to build him a pen and shelter. I have 5 acres to chose a spot to put him on. And he will be seperated from our friends mare. My friend herself has horse experience, i have horse experience, their ranch hand has horse experience and their neighbor also has horse experience and is experienced with training. So i have no doubt he will have the proper training he needs. And he will have plenty of space and shelter. Again if my uncle did not feel confident that i couldnt habdle him he would not offer him to me. Weve already calculated costs and its about $400 in gas there and back. And we will stay at my uncles farm for a day. And then head back. As for trailer we have one we can borrow from a friend or rent one for $50-75 a day. We plan to do new brakes and make sure our tires are good which they are fairly new and do a tune up and oil change on the truck before we leave. Also will make sure that the trailer we use is in good towable shape. We plan to have around $1000 set aside for our trip. Also i have not been able to get on here lately which is why i have not beeb able to answer anyone. I plab to make a first aid kit for the trip and one for at the property. I plan to have the pen and shelter built this winter, and then we will pick him up first thing in the spring so it is easier on him to transition to the weather and we arent worried about snow and ice. As for ali he has recently seen a vet, will be seen again before we pick him up and hes being gelded this upcoming week. I dont appreciate the nasty comments throughout due to me not being able to access and respond as quickly as you all would like. As for care of him, we will supply feed and they will take care of him and keep him there until we move to our own property. Which we have a plan to purchase propertt within 2 years of atleast 2-5 acres minimum. And after that we will move him there once we are ready for him. As for me being a kid or child nice try. I am married with 2 children. So far from child. Not that i need to justify any reasoning but i have not been able to access this page and apparently this is not the group i thought it was. And excuse me for calling a head halter a harness. Since everyone has nothing positive to say i will no longer stay in the chat. Just because someone doesnt respond within a certain time frame you may think is reasonable does not mean you have the right to talk nasty to or about me. I have been busy prepairing to get ali. I was at the property this weekend riding daisy our friends horse, they were building a shed for feed and we were mapping out where we are putting ali and what kind of shelter we want to build him. As for beads and what not. I have been on pintrest and found a lot of projects i have found i would like to do for our horses and things i would like to try and make and sell. So again not sure why majority feel the need to be rude and nasty to someone they know nothing about. We are knowledgeable horse owners and are aware of the cost and risks of owning a horse. And infact instead of selling ali he is keeping him and costing him more money to have him gelded and keep him there so he can give him to me. Because hes never had anyone help him get started on his horses and life and he knows ive had a really hard life and wants to help get me started. So thank you for your negative responses. Good bye.
OP, keep in mind that there is no such thing as a ā€œfree horseā€. You are going to have to devote a LOT of time into re-training that newly gelded horse. My ā€œheart horseā€ was a purebred Arabian and he had been gelded for 3-4 years prior to my acquisition of him. He was dead-broke to most things except that he had one lead and two speeds: dead stop and full, flat-out run. He also knew what his man parts were for and he wasnā€™t afraid to use them. It took me a lot of timeā€¦steady, every day timeā€¦to get him where I wanted him. I did get him there, but it took a very real time commitment. Not training in spurts. Be very sure you are ready to commit to that, or Iā€™d leave that guy behind.

I could trace my guyā€™s pedigree back to the 1700s. I could probably go further with the EAO if I wanted to. I wouldnā€™t focus on that part much. Focus on what is in front of you TODAY.
Yeah, Iā€™m kind of laughing, I have TBs so I can go back to the 1600s before it dead-ends with desert-bred stallions and female families of unknown origins.

I love good Arabians, I started riding as a kid on Polish-bred Arabs, but a thirteen-year-old recently-gelded breeding stallion would not be my first choice. The mare, maybe, 25 isnā€™t THAT elderly for an Arabian. Iā€™d only be interested in playing with a stallion like that if I knew Iā€™d have uninterrupted time to go very slowly. I had enough with my first OTTB, who was gelded at four. It was a few years before he really had his brain in order. It was much easier to deal with current OTTB, who was gelded at some point as a two-year-old and was seven when I bought him with five years of racing and being handled as a working gelding. MUCH nicer brain.

Oh, god. This thread is incredible. She looked at THOUSANDS of horses before she suddenly discovered a majikal connekshun with this stallion.

Iā€™m also calling bs on ā€œmarried with 2 kidsā€. Maybe someday.

I am glad I am not the only one. Especially with the ā€œI will put the beads I saved from my wedding gown in his browband and hairā€.

I came here to read the original after round 2 popped upā€¦ OP, I have a 3 month old baby (my first) and I really hope I have the time to devote to riding that you have when he is 1! My MIL owns a very large ranch, my husband runs it, and thereā€™s plenty of people around who are knowledgeable about kids and horses, but dang, Iā€™m lucky to ride twice a week! From what I hear on the pregnancy thread over in H/J, Iā€™m actually doing pretty good to even be riding that oftenā€¦

Please donā€™t believe in magical sight unseen magical horsey connectionsā€¦ They donā€™t exist. You can definitely build a connection with a horse over time, but there is no sacred bond between a human and a horse that have never metā€¦ That kind of thinking is a good way to get yourself killed.

Iā€™d save all the money you plan on spending on hauling/trailers/training/lessons and buy a nice, older Quarter Horse or Paint that is safe for you and your girls to ride around on. Arabs are an amazing breedā€¦ But theyā€™re also not at the top of the ā€œexcellent family horseā€ list (though some may disagree with me there).

OP - can any of your friends, local trainers or uncle help you answer some of these questions about shipping?

Also, you mentioned bringing something for colic - if it is an injectable, you should be very familiar with its use before going that route.

You might want to look into US Rider insurance - it is like AAA for horses/trailers if you do this yourself. Honestly, you may eventually realize it is easier/cheaper to hire a pro shipper to do this.

This link has a pretty comprehensive first aid kit list.

Thermometer, betadine, wound ointment, saline, 60cc syringes, gauze pads and rolls, non-stick wound pads or sanitary pads, standing wraps and cottons, vet wrap, duct tape, scissors, hoof pick, flashlight/batteries, disposable gloves, diapers, ice packs, clean bucket, electrolytes would be the things I would definitely have along with extra halters, leads and trailer ties. Also a basic tool kit to handle equipment emergencies.

I have been riding roughly 40 years. This year I bought my first young horse to bring along with the help of my trainer who has started many young horses. I can assure you starting a horse is a very different activity than teaching an already trained horse new things. My trainer is also of the opinion that starting a horse after the age of about 6 is significantly harder than starting a young horse. Please donā€™t disregard the advice you have gotten here because it is hard to hear.

This is a terrible, terrible idea.

I would take an OTTB, ANY OTTB, ANY DAY over a 13 year old unbroken arabian stallion. Likewise any 2 year old or younger mustang.

You are a novice. This is too much horse for you. You are going to get hurt. Possibly very badly. As a mother of two young children this is a terribly irresponsible decision.

Go find a nice already broke horse to learn the ropes on first. Find a nice free lease of a champion horse who needs a slower pace. Go to a reputable rescue and get a nice trail horse if you want warm fuzzy feelings.

Do not get this horse.

How come this stallion is not already trained is the uncle is a trainer?? Why didnā€™t he ride him years before now??

This doesnā€™t surprise me much. A lot of breeders lack the time to ride/train. The horse may have been a halter horse that garnered enough attention to never need to be under saddle, or the uncle had enough mares of his own to breed, etc.

I have no opinion on the rest of thisā€¦

13 hours can be trailered straight through. I suggest that you stop for gas only and keep on. The horses will get into a " zone " of sorts after going for a while and will do better if you just get them home and settled in. Also leave them on the trailer the whole time.

Good luck.

Anyone else catch how the 5 yo does homework after school?

I cannot process a married mom of 2 who is an experienced horsewoman and didnā€™t know the word for ā€œhalter.ā€ ???

I am wondering about the ā€œweā€™ll provide feed, they will take care of himā€¦and also watch your 1 year old anytime you wantā€ for free apparently. sure thatā€™s a great deal! said no barn owner ever.

canā€™t be real.

LMAOO I missed both (Iā€™ve been sick with bronchitis so my brain isnā€™t working rightā€¦lol) This has to be a fairy tale!

Just want to say that with an F-150 and a light 3-horse trailer with only one horse I spent well over $200 one-way from North Florida to Missouri. You might want to adjust your estimate.
I ride every weekend.
OP, this doesnā€™t equal lessons with a qualified instructor who knows what theyā€™re doing and can teach you to ride SAFELY. This implies to me (given what you said in previous posts as well) that youā€™ve got a friend who lets you ride her horse on weekends. Thatā€™s not a lesson. I donā€™t care if the friend with ā€˜horse experienceā€™ is giving you pointers - thatā€™s not lessons.

Scarily, that is not unreasonable these days.

I believe that the 5 yo having assigned homework isnā€™t the eye-raising part, but that the 5 yo will do the homework unattended so mom can work with the horse.

Iā€™ll put this here instead of on her new thread. Far as what kind of hitch to use? The one on your truck?

Over the ignorant remarks. We will be going to pick ali the male up in the spring, we are looking into trailers now but of we dont have one by then we will borrow or rent one. Ive started to get things together for him now. I want to be absolutely prepared before he even arrives. This weekend we started clearing out where he will be staying. I simply was wanting input on things i should absolutely have before his arrival. Im still looking into what exactly i need for a first aid kit for long distance.

Ignorance is bliss. First thing we do when she gets home from school is sit down and do homework and read before she does anything else. Not that its anyoneā€™s business, but since everyone feels the need to post nothing but nasty remarks.
